Re: The TV Series Thread - Part 5
Finished Season 1 of The Knick.
Superb acting, wonderfully shot, and extremely well written. I have no clue how I missed this show during its original run, but I imagine GoT had something to do with it.

Re: The TV Series Thread - Part 5
i recall there were a few people hyping it up at the time... seems like it has all the fundamentals for an intriguing drama.
Tried to get in Ozark because of promising a friend i'd try it out. I'd always had my reservations on it just from what i've heard. And even just watching 2 episodes it seems like my gut instinct was. Feel like a Walmart Breaking Bad.

that's exactly what it is, but if you liked breaking bad even a walmart version might scratch that itchEl Gunner wrote:i recall there were a few people hyping it up at the time... seems like it has all the fundamentals for an intriguing drama.

severance is tremendous, loved the first season. incredibly hyped for the second. best show ive watched in years.
Just finished HBO's Tokyo Vice (season 1? better be a second) had good reviews, I think that it looks great, real nice atmosphere, setting appeals but its pretty mediocre overall. Still worth a watch. Michael Mann directed an ep or two and produces it.

Re: The TV Series Thread - Part 5
The trailer for severance looked a bit gimmicky so i didn't pay attention. Is it really worth it?

Severance is absolutely worth it. Amazing show. Finale was incredible but it ended on a HUGE cliffhanger so gotto wait until Season 2 which is gonna be 2 years probably. That's the only annoying part.

Yeah it's a period medical drama. Set in New York in 1900. Deals with a whole host of issues encountered during that time. Steven Soderbergh did some superb work here.

I stayed for the awesome music. The style of having anachronistic synth music on top of period pieces has been copied and imitated since, but it works rather subtly well in The Knick and I found it an original contrast.
Stopped watching at some point in season 2 though, not because it was bad or anything but haven't returned to it since

After rewatching The Wire after many years, I think bar none it is the best written show. So many scenes when the dialogue and acting is so damn good. Then when you rewatch it you see subtleness of it.
I have much more appreciation of Marlo and the kids arc, repeat of the same vicious cycle.

Re: The TV Series Thread - Part 5
The Hamsterdam arc still hits for me. Colvin's drive to change the system structurally was so ahead of its time, it was unfathomable and no one was ready for it so it swallowed him up. The reason cities like Baltimore experience such high amounts of crime is the singular PD focus on numbers and metrics in order to protect their narrative via those COMPSTATS.
That's my favorite arc of the show.

good timing, you guys been watching We Own This City? from David Simon, based on a novel that is based on true events within the Baltimore PD. Featuring tons of The Wire actors. Great stuff, final ep was last night. Bernthal should get an emmy nom.

Just binged it. Took a while for me to get into it. The jumping timelines and so many characters were hard to follow. It click for me in episode 3. It was pretty great indeed. Bernthal was magnetic. He was captivating on screen and the best part of the show.
I'm gonna watch The Corner and Show Me A Hero next. David Simon does not miss.

Re: The TV Series Thread - Part 5
anyone here watched Station Eleven from start to finish?
i'm confused... just watched the first episode. Thought it was supposed to be more of a drama, but it seems to be more of a disaster/apocalypse series with some potential sci-fi/fantasy elements to it based on a few stuff they teased in that opening episode. Found some of the acting to be so overdramatic but then again some real life people reacted exactly that way too for a less severe virus in real life as we found out recently. And also in terms of realism i don't know how much i can buy into an adult Indian man spontaneously chaperoning a little white girl around the city like that and expecting an audience not to get creep vibes.
But anyway mostly i just feel like i was misled as to what this series would be about because some nerds on a podcast (Andy Greenwald and Chris Ryan) oversold it so much when it started coming out.

Undone season 2 does again! Honestly one of the best shows of the past few years. Don't sleep on it.
