Re: 2020 US presidential election
You shouldn't like anti-social behaviour in someone who is supposed to lead a society.
I am disheartened this has to be explained.

Funnily enough, the most unbiased and independent news that you can hear where I live is on the radio actually. I listen to it in the car

Full list of speakers at the Republican National Convention:
Apparently, Trump himself is expected to speak all 4 nights, a break from tradition. That's par for the course for him though.

I, for one, am cackling at the omission of Trump's black super supporters like Candace Owens and those frauds Diamond and Silk not getting invited.

Very true. Trump is like a father in a toxic family going around complaining about the food his wife cooks, "She's a crook", he says. Loses his job, the family is falling apart and he blames it on everyone else, doesnt take reponsibility, beats the son with a belt saying that he's weak and nasty instead of helping him develop properly. It is what it is.

Let's not kid ourselves. We are living through the year 2020. There's no way this monstrosity of a year is not going to end with Trump's reelection.

This, sadly. And if he's not re-elected, he'll find another way.

Re: 2020 US presidential election
Watched a tiny bit of the republican convention and lordy lord is politics the stupidest thing you've ever seen. They showed a clip of people rioting and put the caption "This is Biden's America" as some kind of fear-mongering attempt
And I was like, wait, isn't this Trump's america actually?
and then I watched Colbert and they found out the video isn't even from the US, but from Spain
this is why we can't have nice things

That was 4 nights of total cognitive dissonance.
On top of that, it violated the Hatch Act as well as CDC guidelines.
The "law and order" candidate, folks.

Over the last week the betting odds for Biden have gone from 59% to 53%.
Race riots followed by Nixon on the back of white panic here we come, it's 1968 again.

Wuhan virus handling is already enough to bring Trump down. The riots are increasingly associated with BLM movement. They actually drive undecided peeps into replublican hands. It doesn't help most of it is happening in democratic states.

Re: 2020 US presidential election
Is it? I was speaking to a few ex-coworkers that are Trump supporters and when I told them that Trump was handling corona badly they came at me with 20 statistics to tell me that Trump was handling it just as bad as everywhere else (ie western europe), so he's not really to blame. I don't think they make him responsible for corona's handling at all, and they've forgotten all about the delayed testing or how the Feds would hoard resources and keep them from blue states.

Re: 2020 US presidential election
They also don't care that 1000 Americans are dying day after day?
I'm not surprised if they don't. It's all unreal. Factuality has lost its meaning and authority.
Still, in Germany, daily deaths are single digit. 3, 9, 0, 5, etc. Maybe that's a statistic they do need to hear.

Really incredible if the riots swing the election rather than COVID-19. Small events in few cities that have no impact on 99% of Americans, on the other hand the virus has impacted everyone including 10% unemployment and losses of many small businesses.
You just have to laugh at this point.

I could maybe buy the whole "protests help Trump" idea if he wasn't already president. If they wanna argue that he's the best person to fix this, then what is he waiting for?

1000 people in a country of 300m isn't really felt that much . By the time it gets to their communities that number is diluted a lot.Hapless_Hans wrote:They also don't care that 1000 Americans are dying day after day?

I wasn't talking about Trump supporters, they wouldn't change their mind anyways. The undecided people who can decide the outcome on the last day are Trump's new target. Trump is going with the "security" slogan while Pompeo propagates anti China sentiments.

US is a federal state, the president isn't allmighty. The problems which exist are from long before Trump or Obama. The democrats in their states have to ask Trump to help them otherwise he isn't allowed to intervene. It's a lose lose situation for Trump:
1. If he intervenes he is an undemocratic fascist despot who curbes peaceful protests with violence.
2. If he doesn't intervene he doesn't care about the well being and safety of the people in the democratic states.
Even you believe now that Trump is at fault. He is at fault for the escalation but not for the problems themselves.

It is typical. Those riots are overdramatized by Fox news and CNBCs of this world. This is the problem with biased media from either side: the truth or objectivity is thrown out of the window.
Americans should demand for a proper health care system first after the Wuhan virus experience. Little talk about it in the US media, maybe you know any debates about the topic?

The ironic thing is these same people maximizing and weaponizing these riots are the same ones minimizing the virus. I constantly keep seeing them downplaying it as having less than a percent impact on the population. Bullshit of course, but it's the same cognitive dissonance that we see at higher levels on the right.

Re: 2020 US presidential election
So Rep. Joe Kennedy III (grandson to Robert F. Kennedy) lost his senate Democratic primary bid to incumbent Ed Markey in Massachusetts. First time ever that a candidate from the Kennedy family has lost an election in that state. They are political royalty there, but it looks like that page has well and truly been turned.
Markey is a staunch progressive in the senate and a frequent collaborator with Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. He's of that mold of older progressive with the ability and message to reach younger progressives.
Kennedy positioned himself just center to Markey and it didn't really pay off. His timing for this primary challenge was quite strange. The consensus is he'd rather try and win Markey's seat than have to face fellow Rep Ayanna Pressley (one of the Squad), which would've been a lot more awkward, not to mention difficult given Pressley's popularity.
I think we'll see Kennedy in the Senate at some point. I suspect Pressley is Warren's replacement in the Senate for when she joins Biden's cabinet, leaving Markey the senior the senator. Kennedy could then either challenge him again or bide his time and wait for Markey to retire (he's 74 after all). The latter would be the smarter move.
