nah it's been the same every year for a while, and it will continue to be so.
There were good films in 2018, as is always the case every year, the Academy just never recognises most of them.

Doesn't mean that there aren't weak years or strong years as far as movie quality. Movie quality doesn't just stay constant year after year.
It's a weak year. There were some good movies, but movie quality was mostly poor.

Yea that's what i was implying but i suppose i haven't seen all the oscar nominated films. But then i don't think i'll see something like green book or bohemian rhapsody.
I just think this year's films will be of higher quality. Both Scorsese and Tarantino alone raises the bar higher than most 2018 films.

The Departed probably comes the closest and it was a crime drama.

I can't wait to see Brad Pitt, DiCaprio, Margot Robbie and Al Pacino in the same movie.
Also, Damian Lewis will play Steve McQueen in that film. Has to be a good one. Scoot McNairy casted too (father of Purcell kids in True Detective).
What else is there for 2019? Hit me.

Gladiator
Titanic
Braveheart
French Connection
Those are the four since 1970 that have won. Mad Max and Mission Impossible both robbed though. No respect for these films.

Man 2015 was one incredible year of films.
Two of the greatest robberies in oscar is The Dark Knight (not even nominated lmao) and Mad Max not winning best picture/director tbh

Not so hyped about the Tarantino one, but yeah, will probably still be a great movie.
What else is there for 2019? Hit me.
I assume you mean non-franchise? There's like 50 of them.
US (Jordan Peele)
The Report (Adam Driver is reportedly a sure fire best actor nom)
Triple Frontier (Looks like a great heist action film)
Chaos Walking (Doug Liman)
Long Shot (Jonathan Levine's comedy with Charlize and Seth Rogen)
AD Astra (James Gray's sci-fi film starring Brad Pitt. I'm so excited for this one)
Ford vs Ferrari (James Mangold's ferrari biopic or something. Bale, Bernthal and Damon are in it)
Where'd you go Bernadette (Linklater's new film starring Blanchett. Looks good from the trailer).
Gemini Man (Ang Lee's sci-fi film with Will Smith and MEW).
Joker (Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker. Can't wait to see his performance. He's the best actor of a generation and this role is something I can't wait for).
Doctor Sleep (The Shining sequel starring Ewan McGregor directed by Mike Flanagan).
The Goldfinch (John Crowley's film).
___
Seems to be a pretty good year. Still all the festival movies to be announced missing. Def an improvement over 2018.

2008 was the worst year of all time even. Should def have been nominated lol.

AD Astra is def my number one most anticipated.
James Gray might be the most interesting filmmaker in the current landscape. He makes movies no one else really makes anymore. And he manages to make them even though no one watches his films.

Most people look at the big movies and big name directors for successful and strong years - that's what you two are doing, not everyone does though.
Just look at RG's list for example to back up my point.
2018 is about on par with 2017, if not a bit better.
This decade ranked imo:
2010
2014
2013
2018
2015
2017
2012
2016
2011

Re: Awards Season 2019
Also I don't know if I'm the only one, but I'm slowly starting to see a trend where the big name movies and big directors' movies aren't as big, unanimous hits anymore.
Franchise movies are just franchise movies. MCU is doing well at least in my perspective especially when the Russos are in charge. Star Wars really failing to get the wave going. That Harry Porter spinoff is meh as fuck.
Tarantino's last film (Hateful Eight) is definitely on the lower side of his filmography. Same goes for Nolan (Dunkirk) and Scorsese (Silence).
Only Denis Villeneuve hasn't disappointed this decade.

Re: Awards Season 2019
I mean, you can point to Freeza's list, but I still find 2019 one of the weakest years I've come across
I've been pretty busy though and haven't watched many films. That's one of my problems. But part of that is because the movies this year have been shit enough that I haven't really been interested in many of the films. I need to check out more though, it's my fault I haven't checked out some of the films that I am actively interested in.

Re: Awards Season 2019
Academy just ignored great movies, so if one looked at the 2018 nominees they would think it was a really weak year. If movies like The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs, Annihilation, Sorry To Bother You, MI Fallout, 8th Grade, A Quiet Place were there in the list of nominees over Bohemian Rhapsody and Green Book, the year looks far better.
Need to watch If Beale Street Could Talk. The book is really good and Jenkins did amazing with Moonlight.

Felt Beale Street was too formal and stylish, the acting didn't feel honest, couldn't care for the characters.
Brian Tyree Henry had a good cameo though.

Couldn't believe my eyes when checked the winners this morning and saw that Green Book won. Still happy for main man Viggo though. And I have to say the outrage at the win has been highly entertaining.
At the end of the day though, people should take the oscars less seriously.

The Oscars have so much cultural capital really. They’re ruining it more every year though.
The best picture category is the least cultural relevant at this point though.
I think best director is probably the most telling at this point. It’s the one category that seems to be idiot proof. Since the directors pick the nominees in their category, I would want them to vote for all categories. It's obvious the body as a whole have no idea about what filmmaking entails when Bohemian Rhapsody wins for editing in both film and sound, and Green Book wins for best screenplay. That screenplay is legit horrific after having read 20 pages of it, it reads like a 14 year old idiot's debut screenplay.
But just look at the best picture winners since 1994 and how so many of them have become jokes in culture.
There’s like 5 choices that went to one of the best movies of the year.

Literally no one at the office mentioned the oscars, and my coworkers love to chit chat by the coffee machine. They don't really matter to anyone any more.
