No money to campaign. Doubt anyone saw it.
It costs money to get an Oscar.
Netflix spent $30m on their Oscar campaign for Roma alone.

It has 25k votes on IMDb. Half the number Roma has. I know there's two months between the premieres. It's a big difference, but it's not a huge one. But, yes, Roma already feels like a brand itself, while the other one is lying in the unknown unfortunately. I'm sick of these awards anyway.

IMDb voting is mainly used by young people who pirate movies. I wouldn't really look at that.
Letterboxd has 70k watched for Roma and 23k for Leave no trace. It's a big difference from a comparable audience, that reflect the taste of people voting for awards.
Awards campaigns are too expensive for a lot movies, since they cost millions. Indie movies don't have enough money to even warrant one in many cases. I think a movie like Eighth Grade could've made a push with enough money behind it. But awards campaigns require so much PR, posters, commercials, sending out screeners to thousands upon thousands of members in the industries
It's mainly due to money I'd say. But Roma isn't the best example. I'd say Green Book and Bohemian Rhapsody are examples of huge awards compaigns that somehow worked. Not well-reviewed movies who somehow made the cut because they're talked about constantly.

Re: Awards Season 2019
I’m also young and I pirate movies, lol. I wouldn’t say IMDb voting is something to completely avoid taking into consideration. I know we weren’t discussing this, but I have to say that user ratings don’t matter at all for me. Vote count is something else tho. I only look at the metascore and the ratings given by the members of a private community of movie lovers that I am a part of. But I get what you’re saying.
I guess you’re right with the campaigns. Never really thought about it in depth, although I was aware that without money you’re nothing when it comes to winning the gold.

Can't believe black panther was nominated for the oscar. Movie was so bad I couldn't even finish it. But maybe I got too old for superhero films, I have no interest in watching infinity war or spiderman either.

This is what happens when you shoot down Most Popular Film category. This is the worst list of nominees I ever saw.

They are fun and entertaining movies but that is about it, I may watch it but it is not a must watch movies. The Dark Knight is the only complete package from that genera.

Re: Awards Season 2019
No Eighth Grade is really sad.
I haven't seen most of those movies and frankly have little interest in most of them. I'll probably check out Roma. I'm looking forward to seeing First Man but I don't think that made it. I'd watch Vice. The Favourite looks good too. That's probably it.
So out of the best pic noms, I'm only interested in Favourite, Vice, Roma
What a bad year. I've been out of it with respect to movies this year. I just haven't seen any that interest me, other than Eighth Grade which was fantastic.

Yeah because comparable stuff has never been nominated
I think this year is bad. 2012 is worse overall though. Only think the bottom two are terrible.
Doesn’t change that Bohemian Rhapsody is the worst movie ever nominated and Green Book is the most time deaf.
____
Also this deal with Superhero movies are just mindless fun arguments are weird. Why complain about the academy members reflecting actual taste now?
If anything it just makes the category better since we have fewer of the shit mindless biopics that are nominated every year.
Give me one good reason Black Panther is less artistic and original than a movie like Imitation Game or Theory of Everything. Those movies are so generic and without any artistic flair.

Re: Awards Season 2019
Yeah I put Theory of Everything and Imitation game on the same level as most superhero movies. They're both of the same ilk. They're generic, they're not daring, they're just movies churned out for money and academy recognition. The King's Speech, my god
I'm tiring of them, to be honest. Even well done ones like Lincoln are hardly that exciting, and I love Lincoln (the man) and DDL.
The overall real point is that they're both shite by and large and we should be looking for better.

Gonna respond before the show and make a similar list to yours.
I'm disappointed I didn't get around to some of your picks yet, but my mind has been f'ed up because of school. Think I'm finally free to watch some though.

Listing my supporting nominess. And none of them have been close to awards recognition.
I have a clear number 1 this year. Brian Tyree Henry and Jesse Plemons also delivered incredible candidates.

We kind of have to put them out now, and adjust as we go considering this is the unofficial end of the year.

So what exactly do you guys consider as a criteria when picking your best film of the year and the one which deserves an Oscar above all the others?

Yeah
I would like to watch the last Mission Impossible but I feel I don’t have the patience to catch up considering I’ve not even seen Ghost Protocol. I am not very interested in action flicks lately.
PS. I have to say that I liked Climax a lot while watching it, but hell, it surely is a film that it’s not staying with you after you watch it. Was first on my list and now I am not sure it will even make it. Have to adjust some ratings probably, but overall you get a sense of what I liked and what I didn’t like.

Film score, cinematography, main message, acting, writing etc.
List is long but I have to be honest that in the end, I just rate them and pick them intuitively, not in the most logical and rational way possible. I like to rate films, but not overthink my reasons cause it wouldn’t be fun anymore.

Craftsmanship.
How I feel when I watch it and I can formulate a coherent argument as to why it's a good movie to me. (The forming an argument is important to me, because problematic films can make you feel good and be manipulative in a bad way. Propaganda of sorts (Which I find Green Book to be. Another contender).
Originality in story telling or craftsmanship.
Great performances where actors make you believe they're feeling what they're feeling and doing what they're doing.
I feel there has to be some combination of all these criteria to be a great film and to say it deserves acclaim.
The last criteria is why I think Rami Malek is bad in Bohemian Rhapsody and it's a travesty he'll be an academy award winning actor after the night is over. Never for one second did he make believe he was actually doing what the character was doing. It was so obvious it was an editing job, and the wigs, teeth etc. were obviously fake.

It's the best action franchise of all time imo. You should def watch it. Just take your time. You've got two years to catch up.

Re: Awards Season 2019
Honestly, Green Book is really trying to force the audience in feeling and thinking in a specific way, but I just loved Mahershala Ali in it and this made me enjoy it a lot, because I like him in general.
A lot of black-sploitation and gay-sploitation movies are trending because it’s what gets attention and draws huge commercial impact nowadays. Do I dislike this? Yes and no, but mostly no.
PS. Maybe I don’t want to watch MI because my gf is in love with Tom Cruise more than she is with me atm.

Haley Lu Richardson is a nice shout, Freeze
Good list.
Glad you liked Leave No trace as well. Didn't like Widows that much at all though. Thought it would have been better in a mini-series format. So many good characters and angles that didn't get enough time to be explored imo
