Re: The Movie House - Part 10
That all star cast is something to salivate over. When is the movie coming out, late next year?
Fair point with the argument re: critics misunderstanding you made, Freeze.

It's coming out in August. So 14 months.
Dicaprio took a 10m paycut to do it (from 20 to 10), so the budget might be enough. Can't wait.
It's far and away his best cast ever.

This just came out also. Looks pretty good tbh. Can't wait. Find the first one overrated, so I'm not too precious about this.
Best thing about Alien was always the theme, which is probably top 3 all time movie themes. It's absolutely incredible.

I liked her in the original Halloween a lot. In this one she looks quite bad imo.

Re: The Movie House - Part 10
Looks like I got a lot to learn here also
Thanks El Gunner.
So Freeza can u explain how the critics work? I watch a lot of movies but Im just the average guy who likes to enjoy movies, and as time went started watch more kinds of them, then going online to read reviews, etc, but nothing special and too deep. I always wondered and what u mentioned what does critics base their reviews on then? It seems then one has to know a lot about the background of the movie being made in order to appreciate it for real, but average movie goers dont know all that much and even care?
And something also wondered is, are some critics and awards fixed sometimes? Or influenced by some studios, etc., that push for certain movies? Heard these sometimes but dont know if true or not.
Thanks El Gunner.

Well, critics, mainly the Rotten Tomatoes aggregate, which is the most popular review platform in the world today is built on a binary system that is more often than not understood, because the look of the system can deceiving.
It's not required to give a rating to a film on there, only two option are required, fresh or rotten. Which means there isn't much room for a lot of gray. A movie can can basically be all right for most people, and then receive a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, and therefor it's hardly an indicator of quality.
If you want to use critics as something you use, I'd steer away from platforms like that and steer towards critics who you like to read, share opinions with or even often disagree with. If you've got around 4-5 critics you can trust to be honest it'll be easier to navigate which movies to spend money/time on.
In regards to your question about what a reviewers job is, the main thing they have to is to use their personality as a tool to make a criticism and opinion-based piece of journalism using that. They have to describe why they can recommend something, and why they recommend it. It should, at least in my opinion, be as subjective as possible. Because a huge part of being a critic is forming your own personality through your writing, and making your subscribers know your tastes, so they can trust you.
You don't have to have a lot of knowledge about a movie beforehand to appreciate it at all. But if you have that knowledge it'll obviously change your experience. That's why it's so important to remember that movie opinions are very much subjective. Every single person's tastes are formed based on their life experiences.
I have had a lot of issues with families and my father as an example. That's why movies with a father making a gesture to show love hits me deeply, more than it would have another person who hadn't gone through the same experiences.
If you want some recommendations for reviewers, or movie critics to read, I'm sure @ElGunner, me or anyone else here might be able to give some recommendations if you write what you're looking for in tastes.

I have a hard time understanding this specific question tbh.
I don't think awards are fixed at all really. Maybe the Golden Globes, who is run by around 80 (I think) European film critics based in Hollywood or something. They've been very generous in giving awards previously to films that no one liked, because they wanted huge stars to show up to the event. That show doesn't have a lot of cred, and should mainly be watched for the monologue and people getting drunk.
Studio influence in awards is a real thing. There's so many movies put out each year, and the Academy (the one's giving the Oscar) have so many members who all has to be made aware of a movie coming out. This is probably why Florida Project didn't get nominated this year, and a lot of very low budget movies lack awards recognition at this show.

^^ I don't know, I have my doubts, writing and pacing would have to stay on point throughout the movie for it to work out.

I'm not so sure yet, not the biggest fan of biopics.
Xavier Dolan is another younger talented director with lots more under his belt.

Hasn't really hit mainstream succes yet, and I haven't seen his movies, so can't comment unfortunately.
Coogler can get close though if he doesn't get sucked into superhero movies all the time. He's the same age as Chazelle.
Just rare to see someone this young become a real awards darling in America.
A lot of people want to claim cinema's demise, but I think the young generation is incredibly talented. And I think there'll continue to be an increase in talented filmmakers, because poor people can actually make movies now, everyone can. It's been democratized when it were for the rich people in the pre iphone-era.

Mainly it's just overly quirky, not really funny at all (Well, Goldblum's dog is funny, and Tilda's. But they've hardly got any lines). The human character is absolutely nothing. None of the dogs except one seems like a character at all.
It's mainly characters saying the same weird stuff over and over again.
Also the plot is absolute meh.
Only positive thing about it is that it's look great. And Bryan Cranston's dog is a good character.
–––
Moonrise Kingdom is still his best film by far. The characters seem real, there's actual differences in characters and some real development.
I just feel like his movies are just the same movie in different, but same style of clothes
