Will Ligue 1 overtake Bundesliga?
these two leagues are basically one team leagues.
Bundesliga got Bayern
Ligue 1 got PSG
But the decider is that PSG endless cash >>> Bayern
if PSG reach UCL semis every season, which is becoming and more and more likely as the years go by, and as the mega stars they buy, it will rank up the coefficient for Ligue 1.
the trend is already set:

Was to be expected after the joke of last season. Hoffenheim, Hertha, Köln, Leipzig in international competitions? What could possibly go wrong.
Bundesliga has been abysmal as a whole. Clubs like Leverkusen, Schalke, Wolfsburg, even Gladbach, embarrassing themselves.

Re: Will Ligue 1 overtake Bundesliga?
Hoffenheim, Hertha, Köln are good enough teams considering the overall quality of Europa League. Perhaps they aren't managing the added burden of the additional games. Leipzig has been underwhelming but I would argue that they better than many other CL teams.Hapless_Hans wrote:Mr Nick09 wrote:Bundesliga in shambles this week, 6 games in Europe, 6 losses lol

I must admit, all these are just the gut-feeling of some one who is a casual observant of German League.

The league is very, very bad at the moment. I would say the worst of the top 4 leagues.

Re: Will Ligue 1 overtake Bundesliga?
Ligue will depend on the success of Lyon, OM and Lille... and whether Monaco can sustain their level. Lille is in shambles early on. OM don't excite me. Lyon are a brand new team.
Honestly, since every good player in Ligue 1 gets poached bar PSG players, it's a year by year thing to see where the level is. Maybe OM can resist selling going forward... but I doubt it.
It isn't structured to be a top league. Most clubs are looking to develop and sell players as a business model. Without selling players, most clubs in Ligue 1 can't survive unfortunately.

Ligue 1 was ahead in the UEFA rankings for a few years in the mid/late 00s back when Bayern sucked ass.

Re: Will Ligue 1 overtake Bundesliga?
Of course it will. Does it reflect on which league is stronger or better? Absolutely not.
Bundesliga is going through an interesting period. Bayern is as of now at the end of their cycle but that is not inversely proportional to the rest of the leagues stasis. You can generalise about Bundesliga at this current moment because most of them are following a current trend. Though Germany's overall golden period in football is past what it was; the clubs are going back into a mode of stasis by risking themselves and delving to find young fresh minds in form of coaches, management and the science that drives it and a further exclusive movement on youth since in general, spending big seems a partial cultural taboo. Its not in particular fun to watch because the results are highly intangible at this very moment. The club I follow the most (HSV) for example are just as frustrating. But when or IF the risk pays off and the league unearths itself after what is this long (loooong) term plan, it will yield in a fruitful period with Bayern once again leading the way, and as they should.
Ligue 1 on the other hand is rising and has been as a result of money influx, restructuring and a golden period for French talent. Opinions on the league are the worst from Top 5 (relevant) leagues and GL's ignorance on it is nigh legendary. They will continue to move up and by 2020-22 they will be in the Top 3 mark my words.
Both arent mutually exclusive.

Maybe if Bayern didn't raid the Bundesliga of all of its talent season after season there wouldn't be this problem. Competition is healthy

Bundesliga has VAR , so for me it is still superior league.
That disallowed goal to Leverkusen for offside yesterday after two seconds
Best introduction in football ever , I can' t believe just serie a and bundesliga have this.

i'm not so up on league talk, you watch what you like, but when i saw this topic, this was the exact point i wanted to make. u bring int'l stars it attracts an audience to your product. but pillaging any competition that comes around which bayern have done for years. and real and barcelona do it too, but not on that level. can't even blame bayern, clubs should know how to hold unto their talent, or not sell to their rivals, even if u sell to your rivals, make them pay through the nose....mbappe's not heading to psg for 40 million. monaco can use that cash for great things outside of football

thing is they're getting them relatively cheap. lewandowski and gotze were the two best players on the rival side that had made the ucl finals and had won back to back league titles about a year or two before the move. they got both guys for less than 45 million. dortmund didn't handle that right, its why big clubs get players to pen extensions 2/3 yrs before their deal runs out. letting your best player leave in his prime on a fee, shows lack of something; ambition, cojones, guts.
they got ballack and ze roberto for less than 30 million together. even at the time when the market wasn't all over the place they basically got them for next to nothing. as i said, not bayern's fault, but the executives at those other clubs. if you're selling to your rivals for cheap its tough to build

Again with this stupid nonsense that isn't getting truer the 100th time it's used?
BVB sold neither Götze nor Lewandowski to us
I repeat
BVB sold neither Götze nor Lewandowski to us
once again
BVB sold neither Götze nor Lewandowski to us
also, this is 5 years ago ffs
totally explains why Leverkusen, Wolfsburg, Schalke, are so shit today right

Re: Will Ligue 1 overtake Bundesliga?
yeah that's even worse , they allowed the opportunity to let their player go to a rival for free and trigger a relatively low release clause. sensible sides don't wait till the last two years or last year to start negotiating new deals for their top players especially when they know there is a bayern around. it would be better for them (and possibly the league) if they sold lewa and gotze for huge cash

Re: Will Ligue 1 overtake Bundesliga?
Only place those two players wanted to go was Bayern. They refused to be sold to any other club and they were already assured by Bayern that they would be bought if they just waited out their contract.
Dortmund was in an impossible situation. If they sold to Bayern, it would have been political suicide by the management.... so they allowed the players to leave for free to save face.
They should have a gentleman's agreement like they do in Spain where Madrid-Barca and Madrid-Atleti no longer target each others' players. Theo Hernandez was the first direct purchase since the Figo deal many moons ago I believe... and i think that was OK'd since Theo wasn't going to be a regular at Atleti and I think that's the gentlemen's arrangement.

Re: Will Ligue 1 overtake Bundesliga?
i actually don't believe a gentleman's agreement exists in la liga, real has hardly wanted any player from atleti in the past, there have been links, but nothing concrete. as for barcelona, its a transfer that'll be extremely difficult to make between both clubs, also influenced by the fact their guys don't want to join us and probably vice versa. if flo knew he could get messi he'd have made that move asap
dortmund didn't have a choice, cos they didn't lock their talent down. sahin was a top talent for them, we signed him for around 8 million pounds, kagawa left for 12 million pounds. when you don't renegotiate with your top talent quickly enough, you put yourself in these 'impossible situations', where the player has all the cards to go where they like and you're forced to sell for peanuts
i'm glad they didn't let barcelona strong-arm them for dembele ; but barca couldn't cos he still had four years left on his deal.

Re: Will Ligue 1 overtake Bundesliga?
another reason i don't believe in the gentleman's agreement theory that floats around- why the hell wud we have that kind of agreement with atleti? its not like they have the power to sign our players, serves no purpose to us at all.

Re: Will Ligue 1 overtake Bundesliga?
The couldn't lock them down tito. They refused to extend AND refused to be sold to any other team. Everyone was after Goetze but he didn't want to leave Germany. Madrid made a run at Lewandowski when he was at Dortmund, but he wanted nothing of it (rumors of course; but this one was pretty well covered by the good reporters).
Nothing wrong with it. You can play out your contract. It's your right. The way to make a player cave is typically to send them to the youth team if they don't extend... but Dortmund didn't do that.
Falcao and Aguero were both Atleti players we passed on due to our relations with Atleti... Falcao tried damn hard to make us buy him too. Barca... more a massive PR and political problem then an agreement imo from a player standpoint. Not worth the headache.

Re: Will Ligue 1 overtake Bundesliga?
when did dortmund try to extend their deals? (legit question btw, i don't knw the timeline of events) cos if you're trying to extend when the player has only a year or two left its probably too late. we passed on falcao and kun cos we know flo's affinity for benzema. but the point is we passed on them, rather than an agreement between us and atleti being in existence. actually we were close to falcao one time, i think before or just after he left utd, but flo refused, because of the clout jorge mendes was getting at madrid. which flo mentioned himself. no reason we'd make any gentleman's agreement with anyone not to sign talent
it was actually calderon who started that "gentleman's agreement" talk with laporta. but calderon couldn't even get us capdevilla, so i doubt laporta was worried about him signing their players.....he did sign saviola and patted himself on the back for it, calling him a mixture of prime raul and prime owen

Re: Will Ligue 1 overtake Bundesliga?
They tried for a year, then tried to sell them with 2 years left in their contracts while continuing to try and extend them. Tried the whole way through.
It got ugly. I do agree that Dortmund aren't very good at transfers as these are just examples of several high profile blow ups. Hummels is another.
