Ultimate question: How on earth does Messi and Ronaldo even have thesame Balon D'or wins?

At least, El fenomeno and zidane were in thesame talent ball park. I mean, messi and ronaldo aren't even on thesame talent tier or stratosphere, but somehow, ronaldo has magically identical individual awards in that time frame and will still go down as an equal legend by the some people and heck, even some media outlets? Heck, even messi still trumps him on the stat sheets too (pretty much the major strong suit of cr7). So the question is, how did it happen, when messi outperformed, outscored, and out-won more trophies in that time frame? how do we explain to our children that the legendary rivalry was actually more like comparing prime El fenomeno vs schevchenko/nistelrooy with a straight face?

1. Because it isn't called best player.
2. Because people voting only look at stats because they can't watch all games.

but the year Spain won the WC was his 1 chance to win it. Sneijder coincidentally won the treble and made the WC final. So it was one or other other. There's no timeline in which they  both get it. But yes at least one of them should have won.

And considering that Cannavaro won it for winning the WC over Ronaldinho's CL win then it probably should have gone to Xavi.

I know that they arent exactly equal but 5 and 4 is damn close as it gets tbh and if cr7 wins the cl or la liga or Confederations cup, then thats a sure fifth B'do for ronaldo, which is a big possibility considering that he has a realistic chance of winning any or multiple of them this year. Something messi can't say this year. Heck, even winning just one of them is a sure B'do win for cr7 regardless of whatever he does this year. Its incredible tbh

Football is a lottery. I already gave up with the ballon dor BS. Because i cant accept that CR has more ballon dors than Zidane and R9 and soon will be equal with Messi. And maybe even surpass him.
Voting system is wrong. To define best player they should use rating system for every match and calculate points at the end

Gone are the days when the world voted for the outright best player regardless of goals, trophies, competition or team. Like when R9 won the world player of the year in 96 for psv/barca, without any european football for psv and playing in the euro cup winners cup for barca and in 97 for inter, playing in the Uefa cup. Or Ronaldinho in 2004 without even winning a single trophy and crashing out of the Uefa cup QF's and in 2005 where barca crashed out of the cl 2nd round. Those guys didnt even play in the Champions league neither did they win shit tone of trophies but you couldn't deny that they were just simply the crazy absolute best by quite a large margine. Particularly with Ronaldo in 1996/1997 and dinho in 2004. Something that applies to messi since 2008 till now.

Also CR and Messi should both have one less. They won FIFA ballon D'ors not the actiual Ballon D'or. Iniesta and Ribery would have won under the old format as they had the majority of journalist votes.

If it was for titles then xavi sneijder and ribery deserved it. CR also deserved 4 or one less.  
But if we talk about the best player then Messi deserved 8 ballon dors. There was no better player than him in this generation. For me only Neymar comes close. CR doesnt come close. He is just a great goalscorer. A player in Neymar's level deserves more ballon dor

Maybe, but Ribery had no chance with this voting system. If blatter didnt reopen voting messi would have won it.there was only 3% difference between messi and cr votes.

I think OP is talking about true best player not the best performer from the title winning team. If we go with the best performer from title winning team then CR will end his career with 7 ballon dors and it doesnt look right

Ok, messi on 4 and cr7 on 3, but the point is how the heck are they even that close? What changed in the voting process? Cause apart from 2010/13 when iniesta/ribery had more journalist votes, its always being them getting all the votes both from jornalists and coaches/captains. So what changed? Was it the general perception of the game? (e.g the sudden reliance on stats) Football decline? (e.g being that football is now mostly geared towards the attacking side of the game) Lack of knowlegeble journalists? (e.g basically hyping up any half decent goal scorer whilst overlooking overall performance) Fifa bias? (e.g merging fifa and uefa awards, fifa re-opening voting for the 2013 voting process) Overly Bias coaches and captains? (e.g messi voting mascherano and aguero in 2012), what has really happened? Because the old format seems to have been pretty reliable, more reasonable, and less controvertial. Cause, if we use this metric guys like zidane, dinho would have won no awards which is very shameful tbh..

Farce of award leading to both having more than they deserve, Messi having some meh years collectively and Ronaldo being very consistent.

I think most people with sense know that Messi is clearly a better player overall tbh, better playmaker, better dribbler and they are pretty equal on scoring.

That's no slight on Ronaldo though as Messi is a once in a lifetime talent who only isn't the consensus GOAT because of repeated failures in the final for Argentina for what ever reason.

Ribery was clearly their best player over the season and most important and they lost pretty much every time he didn't play.

Anyone who says Robben loses all credibility considering he was benched by Kroos for most of the season and only got to play due to his injury.

But nah Ronaldo gets a Balon D'Or because he scores a load of meaningless goals against scrubs, if there's any examples of the award being a farce it's that.

Being the best player is completely irrelevant, it basically an MVP award for the year or at least it used to be....
