Why Messi's Balon D Or 2010 was false

In past and in sane times (before they decided to unite Balon D Or with another trophee), the criteria was:

-Player that wins major trophy with a team gets it
-Player that stands out gets

Messi in 2010 was neither:

-He didnt win major trophy, even didnt make final, and his NT adventures you well know
-He wasnt a stand out player in that year as he was clearly outshined by Sneijder and Robben


Now, the main argument of supporters of his win of the award: "But Sneijder didnt play few months after wc too well", which is true

Well even if that so, Messi doesnt match the criteria above, as he didnt win 1 of 2 trophees that year, and he also wasnt a stand out player.

It's a glorified popularity contest that has the name FIFA in front of it. Sneijder would have won the bdo if the awards were separated as the journalists voted for him. Ffs fabregasis in the list even though he played sod games last season. It has always been a farce and will forever be one tbh.

Messi won 4 trophies 09-10 and matched fat Ronaldo's goal haul record 47 in one season in spain, top scorer in UCL, La Liga and Europe. He was also the best player in Argentina national team which came 5th in WC, and masterminded almost all the goals. Yeah, didn't deserve it, at all.

Not to sound a hypocrite and inb4angryBarcafans, Shevchenko award was debatable

So was Owen's

Sneijder deserved it but it was hardly highway robbery like Owen's.

Messi was actually the best player in the world that season.......but you can only ask for consistency in these sorts of things and it's clear to me that before this they always weighted big cup tournaments more than goals or stats.I have no problem with it though....at the end of the day what does it matter whether Messi has 7 or 8 or 9 or 10 Balon D'or's.........it's still going to be double that on anyone else anyway.

Its not "best player in the world award" its "player that had best season awards" matching 2 criterias listed.

Yup and what I'm saying was that he was by some margin the player that had the best season individually if you discount actual trophies.......

All I can say is that if Lionel Messi wins again, I will be infuriated, because he does not hold a candle to Michel Platini.

I'm obviously a Barca fan BUT I can agree that Wesley deserved the award in that year for the sole fact that his team went through Barca to win the CL. BUT, Messi still was the best player in the world that year.

Also, how in the world can you say Messi didn't stand out, thats up there for one of the most asinine quote's I've ever seen???? And also how was he out shined by Robben in that year. All Robben won was a league title and a League cup not to mention I would guess that Messi probably doubles him in goals, assists and trophies for that year.

Yes, If Ronaldo can win La Liga and reach the final 4 of the CL then he will probably win the award if Barca don't win the CL. HE will have to watch out for Gomez though because if Bayern win there league which they will and the CL then Gomez's stats are going to be off the charts.

My take on it is that a criteria has to be defined. Messi was the best individual player no doubt, but Sneijder was pure clutch.

Buthurt people know he is going to win it this year too and they have no reason whatsoever to bash him for this, so they turn to old news just to trash talk about him. This has been discussed so many times here.

You guys do know that the fifa ballon d'or is an individual award right?

"The criteria now for FIFA's Ballon d'Or winner include: performances in major tournaments; individual and team honours; individual talent; skill and fair play; their overall career and finally personality and charisma."

This description is pretty generic but it was said in a press conference by a fifa exec, and many others that the fifa ballon d'or looks at individual brilliance first and foremost.

Sneijder had a more successful season, but Messi does outstanding sh*t every game, and it's not like his season was rubbish.

lol, come on, really? i know the player of the year usually is the winner of the UCL or WC, but it's not a rule. Messi didn't win either one then, but still was the best in the world. I think he outshone (and still outshines) anyone else.

In terms of Neymar, knowing how Eurocentric the choosing of the award is, once he stays in South America, he'll probably never win it. As for Messi's 2010 win, small mercies really. I would have rather see Sneijder or Xavi win it but I don't think either player really dwell on that award too long since they had other trophies to gaze at...

Ballon d´or is for the player who had the best indivual season(i.e how he performed) and NOT for the player in the team that won the most trophies.

Messi was the best individual player that season while sneijder won the most..
