It's a show, it's a popularity contest, the footballer with the biggest "wow" factor has the edge. Messi is obviously, at an advantage, because he scored a huge amount of goals. But Ronaldo, being in an arguably worse team, achieved more. Plus he's had 2 Motm performances at the euros (out of 4 games). So he has a good chance. But Messi is still the favorite.

In any case Peter Shmeichel, Paolo Maldini, Don Alfredo Di Stefano and even Diego Maradona have declared their admiraton of Cristiano. He is the symbol of our love for the game.

The award is a sham anyways. Ronaldo didn't break records this year, because his team's goals were more important than individual goals.
Messi scored 70+ goals this season. Ronaldo scored 60. BUT, Ronaldo won the league, Messi didn't... Ronaldo scored a goal in the clasico and 2 in his CL semi-final... Messi scored in neither. Those 3 goals are easilly worth the 10 goals difference between the two. AND, you forget, Messi scored all those goals as a center forward, Ronaldo scored his as a winger. Also, Ronaldo shared goals with two other players... Both Higuain and Benzema scored over 30 goals each, in Barca there were no other goalscorers than Messi .... And considering that CR is performing very well for his NT, and that he may lead them to European success (or relative European success) should be enough to prove that he's the best...

But at the end of the day, I guess I'm sounding like a biased madrid fan, and that's probably true. But this award is a sham. It's a popularity contest, and if everyone hates Ronaldo, he'll never win it again. But, considering that Sneijder never won it in 2010, Messi will win. And it means nothing.
