Depor fans call him Super Lucas. Went on a Vardy like run of scoring last year (something like 8 or 9 straight games), kind of fizzled out in the second half of the season.

Quick, skillful type of striker. Think he'd be a decent alternative to Giroud, but he's not a massive upgrade and is 27 so doubt he'd improve that much.

Tbh I think Sevilla/Villareal is his level, but we do need someone...

If it makes you feel any better, Perez was wanted by Leciester when Steve Walsh, their head of recruitment (guy who signed Kante and Mahrez) was there. Walsh is now at Everton, who are also interested.

So it's a player he rates, at least.

Tbh we need someone And as bitchy as we Arsenal fans are, we always support the new signings. We even tried to be positive about Park Chu Young ffs.

So if he comes then we'll be behind him. Might turn out to be the Spanish Vardy which we need at the Club. Although this means Giroud starts another season as our no 1 striker lol.

This is the agent trying to drive up the price for Everton. Simple as.

Meanwhile, Paco Alcacer is going at 30+5 - not like we would have the smallest of chances there, but still

Could be a late bloomer, for all we know.

The quoted fee is a release clause, which Everton reportedly already agreed to pay.

Marca this morning are saying there's "total agreement", that the player could sign a three to four year deal, and that Depor are looking for replacements. They also say the player can still turn the move down but they seem confident he won't.

Usually if agents/clubs are trying to drive the price up you don't see words like agreement and imminent in reports.

He's ok. Not better than Giroud, Walcott, Gnabry, etc.... so I really don't see the point tbh.

The point is that we need someone because we only have one viable option up front and have already missed out on the players that would improve us. As a CF option he's surely better than Alexis and Walcott.

It's a mess of our own making but we either have Giroud-Lucas for a season or Giroud-Walcott-Alexis-Sanogo-etc for a season.

Why not spend and get true improvement or a good yet young player?  Lacazette is available.  So is Auba (quoted this am as saying he would only leave if he got the same wage as Higuain got).  Jese was available.  Bacca.

There was better out there and there's still a couple.  I don't get what this accomplishes other than depth.

The club obviously don't want to spend that much money on a forward. I don't agree with this "strategy" but it is what it is. I'm not going to say no to a so-called depth signing since we need it

So a lot more to it than my first inclination hmm

Thanks for those details, Jay.

I still find it amusing that in a summer where 96m was our estimate, and we spent 36 on Xhkaka, we had about 60 left. That is basically 20 Vardy or 35 Laca bids in there - plus kids. Kelechi really shouldn't count in there, since he was scouted and negotiations began in Jan or something. So basically, we never wanted to dip into the higher end striker market all along.

That is, we never really wanted to look to displace Giroud. Telling.

Lucas is in the Depor squad for their next game, but they have taken more players than usual, and their manager has said he's aware something may happen in the next couple of days.

West Brom want him as well, offering bigger wages than Everton did Laughing

I like to think we can beat out the competition here but you never know.

I wonder about that estimate. I'm convinced we have more money that that, and we can raise funds by selling players. We threw out a good £70-80mil on players in 2014 (Ospina, Chambers, Alexis, Welbeck, Debuchy) which if you total up the wages would easily put the outlay close to £100mil, and we've only gotten richer since then...

Just seems odd to me that the budget has seemingly shrunk, especially after we only spent about £20mil last year.

That's why I am also curious. The AGM could well be a tasty affair with more smooth talking.

They'll just filter out any questions regarding transfers in all likelihood. Can't have the masses being too nosy in their affairs...

Anyway, 7amkickoff on Lucas:

Lucas scored 17 goals on a mere 100 shots with just one goal from the penalty spot but, crucially, he scored four goals on the counter attack. Arsenal were one of the worst teams in England on counter attacks last season, scoring just three goals in 38 games. Lucas also added 8 assists for Depor, often playing as the lone striker up front and creating for late-running midfielders. All combined Lucas scored or created 25 of Deportivo’s 45 goals last season, carrying 56% of the scoring workload for his team.

Lucas took 100 shots and also created 72 shots for teammates, that means 38% of Deportivo’s total offense ran through Lucas. This season he has already scored and assisted both of Deportivo’s goals in their opening match against Eibar. It remains to be seen if a player who is used to being the number one option will be happy playing in the Arsenal system or if, perhaps more crucially, the Arsenal system will be happy playing him as the number one option.

Lucas’ total shots numbers are low for a star striker at 100. However, his team only took 455 shots in the whole season. In contrast, Arsenal took 574 shots last season, 119 more shots total. Arsenal also created 467 key passes last season and Deportivo 331. The shots will be there for Lucas at Arsenal if he wants them.

Lucas is also not the type of player to just take shots from distance. In a typically Arsenal style, Lucas took 66% of his shots inside the 18 yard box. He also scored only two goals from outside the 18 yard box, one from a direct free kick.
