Re: Turkey and Erdogan Watch
2 noob questions, pls educate me
If Erdogan is a bad guy why are the people ready to lie in front of tanks for him/democracy when the military stated that they only planned to overthrow him and continue democratic rule and why did only 20 people attempt a coup?

Re: Turkey and Erdogan Watch
Not sure if serious. Anyone can have a big number of supporters.. even Hitler had a huge number of supporters willing to die for him.
We don't know anything about the numbers. Also it's not so much about the numbers but about what the military is doing. If you want to do a coup you need to arrest the people in power. You can't seize power simply by saying so.

Re: Turkey and Erdogan Watch
The key element of the Military were never involved in the coup. It was just a small group. Like a regiment.
They got hold one 1 plane and 1 tank by the looks of it.

CNN Turk just tweeted:

Went to nap for a few hours wake up and find out this was some poverty coup
Religious regimes should have no place in democracy, by definition it's not democratic so I was hoping this coup succeeds.

The coup has failed, they're just slaughtering civilians right now.

I can't believe that the army did that to the people they should protect.

Turkey were under martial law. Civilians should not be outside. It was a war zone. It's sad this resorted to violence and killing.

Re: Turkey and Erdogan Watch
I suspect the coup was actually staged by Erdogan himself as this gives him a good excuse to "clean out the military" and install more of his supporters there to undermine the secular leanings of the military and safeguard him from a real coup.
Next should probably be a referendum that takes away the people's right to vote

Re: Turkey and Erdogan Watch
World is seriously falling apart man. Lots of death everywhere and people like trump have a shot at being president. The rich get richer, the poor get poorer, racism between groups just keeps growing (blacks vs whites) (Europe vs refugees/Arabs), and more innocent people die everyday, all in the name of greed and pride. *bleep* humanity man

DuringTheWar wrote:"Democracy is like a train: when you reach your destination, you get off" - Recep Erdogan.
With this apparently failing coup Erdogan moves closer to his destination.
Yep.
Talking about 'cleansing' the military now. What a terrible turn Turkey has taken. It's *bleep* depressing.

Sadly this wouldn't surprise me.
When this started yesterday, I was hoping for a Kemalite majority of oldschool military conservatives to successfully eject Erdogan from power, to be honest.
Not that surprised the coup failed, Erdogan spent the past 5 years rooting out pro-secular and democratic generals and admirals in the military.
Luckily my mates in Ankara were nowhere near the fighting. All of 'em checked in this morning.

Supporting a failed coup that just killed more than 200 people? The level of hypocrisy is mind blowing in here. Stop for a minute and reflect please, don't let your hate for a man blind you for what really happened here. If you enjoy watching innocent people die I suggest you support the savages that are ISIS.

Re: Turkey and Erdogan Watch
I didn't support the idea of a coup, or killing civilians. I said when I heard of the coup, I hoped it was Kemalites, and that they'd be successful, because that would mean no civil war, and Kemalites succeeding in a coup would mean free elections soon after.

Supporting a failed coup? What if that coup was indeed a ploy by Erdogan to grab even more power and oust even the last secular military guys?

In my experience things like this only make it worse. Plus I read it in Machiavellis book where it said the same thing (in the first chapter)

Yeah like him or not, he is the democratically elected leader of Turkey. Western powers should be doing everything they can to support democracies, even ones in which institutions are not particularly strong like in Turkey.

Turkish government is asking United States to hand over Fethullah Gülen.

Democracy isn't worth a dime in countries like Turkey where half the population lives in rural areas, dropped out of school after elementary school, herds sheeps for a living, can't spell its own name and is hardcore religious because that's all they've got in life.
