I am talking to a friend in Istanbul.
He says a military officer told him that the Military Chief of Staff has been kidnapped and they have declared martial law. He saw tanks roaming the streets about an hour ago.
EDIT: It's an attempted military overthrow of the Government.
Even worse, could be the start of a civil war

Re: Turkey and Erdogan Watch
What we know so far about the coup:
1. Turkish army says it has taken over in a statement.
2. Government says it's a group from within armed forced and they will fail.
3. Istanbul airport seized.
4. Explosions and gunfire reported.
5. Local tv reporting officials taken hostage.
6. Military deployed.
7. Social media blocked and internet down in Turkey.
8. Soldiers on streets as well as tanks.

Re: Turkey and Erdogan Watch
He has become more of a dictatorship in recent times and already has lost a lot of support from the people. He has been imprisoning those who are a threat to him. Blocking any sort of news which makes him look bad. Tourism has suffered under his rule. His son was discovered forging fake papers to escape. And he has been involved in several corruption cases.
This military coup might reinstate democracy. But it might not. Who knows.

Re: Turkey and Erdogan Watch
I can't help but feel that this may be good news, as absurd as that sounds.
Erdogan has been escalating into an Islamist dictator at an alarming rate in recent years, increasing the power of his office, cracking down on dissent, let's not forget a full-on war against parts of his populace ongoing.
The army has a strong Kemalist republican tradition, I assume it's these forces having decided they've had enough with Erdogan.
Probably still not good news for the Kurds though, they might be *bleep* either way

Removing Erdogan is good but of course we have to wait what the outcome is.

Re: Turkey and Erdogan Watch
A question ... Turkey was hit from many attacks in last period. it was a suspected cadence.. were they claimed really from ISIS ?
Because otherwise it's the same strategy that took to Greek military junta of 1967–74, when the country was hit from series of crimes to spread panic and uncertainty, so as to create the preconditions for a coup ( as it happened. Same was in Italy in that period, but two coups failed.). Strategy of tension.

I think the Turkey military is a special case, Robes. Not sure whether such parallels hold.

Re: Turkey and Erdogan Watch
Pakistan comes close. Their military have pr campaign to make people believe that they are the good guys and all politicians are corrupt. Last week Pakistan military general 's posters have been seen widely in the street making huge panics among the government.
Comes to think of it. Military uprise when there is problem in Kashmir ATM a war between India and good old military seized Pakistan may be imminent.

Erdogan is a massive POS indeed. Hopefully there's no violence but I definitely feel like this is a good thing if it gets the current regime overthrown.

No matter how bad Erdogan is a coup is worse. Very bad news for this to happen to a NATO country. The world is falling apart it seems.
