Oscars 2015 Empty Oscars 2015

Post by Peccadillo Tue Jan 13, 2015 1:36 am

So Oscars are just around the corner, with the date set for Feb 22.

Lets discuss.

I for one hope Linklater does not get best director. I think the execution of Boyhood was poor and it could have been so much more if not for lacklustre direction - I feel alone in this view but there it is.

I do however think Patricia Arquette is deserving of best support actress.

Inherent Vice as inevitable oscar bait could well be a formidable contender, have not seen it yet.

I'd like to see Grand Budapest get awarded for best director but I'm also biased because I'm a Wes fan.

Best actor between Cumberbach for Imitation Game. I think Birdman will take cinematography.

Apparently Julianne Moore is a shoe-in for best actress, but I haven't seen Still Alice so can't comment.

I'd love to see Interstellar get best picture, firstly because its highly possible anyway and purely because I'm a sci-fi nut and its about time sci-fi got more Oscar recognition.

Anyway just a few of my thoughts - Discuss.

Can't see Interstellar winning it tbh.

I would love Linklater to get it. I loved Boyhood and I think it is a truly special film.

It looks like Keaton is a lockdown for Best Actor from what I've seen so far. Still no love for main man Gyllenhaal Sad

But this is the Oscars and we see a few surprises every now and then.

Doesn't Best Picture have 10 nominees? If so then Interstellar does deserve tog et nominated. Easily top 10 of the year.

It has 5-10 depending on the voting. No way it gets in tbh.
Boyhood
Birdman
Theory of everything
Imitation game
Grand Budapest hotel

Those 5 seem like locks
Selma will also get in
Whiplash
Foxcatcher
Nightcrawler
Gone Girl

These 10 seems like they'll be the top 10. Nowhere have I read interstellar as a top pick for the Oscar.

And disagree with it being easily top 10 hmm

Agree to disagree then. Interstellar is the one of best sci fi films in recent years. Was better than Gravity which won the most awards last year and was nominated for Best Picture.

Doesn't change the fact that it won't get nominated. The Oscar voting system only takes the top picks into account.

The film has to be number 1 on 5% of the voters' list to get nominated.
It can also get a number 2 vote count if the first place on the list has a very high amount of votes.

So there prob won't be 10 nominees since there has to be a very even split of the top votes. I think Birdman and Boyhood will reach surplus and have a lot of no. 2 get counted. Doubt interstellar is top 2 over boyhood and Birdman, and the others I listed on enough lists.

In what world is Inherent Vice Oscar bait? Selma is Oscar bait. I could make a case for Foxcatcher being Oscar bait. But Inherent Vice? How often do comedies win best picture? Just because it was released this late in the year doesn't mean it's Oscar bait.

Speaking of baits, Unbroken joins the list of Oscar baits which ends up being epic fails. I wish a better director than Jolie made that film, the source material is amazing and could have been a tremendous film.

Btw I watched Whiplash today. Great film. JK Simmons was immense, will deservedly win Best Supporting Actor. Miles Teller was amazing as well, hope he sneaks in a nomination for Best Actor.

WERE YOU RUSHING OR WERE YOU DRAGGING?!

There is no word in the English language as toxic as "good job"

Many great quotes in there. Apart from the acting, the cinematography was amazing too. That literal blood, sweat and tears  Hope it gets nominated for Best Cinematography too/

Selma though

Nightcrawler is far better in originality and execution. Gone Girl also miles better. But hey, these Oscar voters always want "their" American bio-pics/portrayals of the past in there for recognition as if they haven't done that enough in recent years.

Lincoln
12 Years a Slave
Selma

Mind you the first two deserved their spots, but Selma is a step too far.

The fact it's over anything. Could name a 100 better movies from 2014.

Life Itself, Lego Movie, Nightcrawler + Gone Girl, Gyllenhaal.
Those are the snubs imo. Other than that it's fine.
