Completely agree on Poch, guy needs to do something relevant firstly.

Gasperini got Atalanta to play great last season and finished 5th, you don't see me banging drums about him.

How is being 2nd in the league for 2 years in a row not "relevant" Laughing GL suffering from amnesia as always

Spurs finished third in 2016

lost 5-1 to Newcastle on the final day of the season

Just came to say that.

First BC tries to convince GL Poch turned Spurs from a mid table side to title contenders and now trying to convince us Spurs finished 2nd twice. Proud

Lol momentary lapse, the point still stands though. The fact of the matter is that Spurs under Poch have improved tremendously and punched far above their weight. He was able to turn nobodies like Dier into footballers that are getting 40m bids. All with one of the lowest net transfer budgets in the league (in some instances negative) and is able to compete and outperform clubs that have spent over a hundred million pounds more.

The mark of a good manager is doing the most out of your resources, not titles. If Klopp had won the bundesliga with Bayern instead of Dortmund far less people would rate him. And in this metric there's no doubt Poch has done a fantastic job so far.

Yeah the CL is still a sore subject, but we have to remember that Spurs is very young and inexperienced in this competition, it usually takes new teams a while to get used to it (see City's first years at the CL for instance, or Napoli's). We'll see how they do this year.

Was Kane highly rated as a youngster tho? Thought his stock only rose recently when he was well past 20. The guy was playing in lower leagues on loan not long ago.

Having said that at least in his case, I agree Poch had nothing to do in his rise. He gave him the chance when Soldado was flopping hard and the guy just started delivering. Similar to perhaps Van Gaal and Rashford. Both of them gave their respective players chances (often as a result of so many different factors paving way), but I reckon even they were taken by surprise how well these guys grabbed those chances.

Have been busy the last couple days and looked for response now, and honestly not worth the time. I've said what I've said, it seems clear that Melotrance doesn't really care about developing a squad tbh, but that every player who is good now has always been like that, doesn't depend on the manager. Only one question. If Poch's squad is really that good and always has been, why weren't they challenging for an EPL title? There is a big difference between barely finishing fourth with 70/72 points like AVB and Redknapp and getting 86 points like Poch did last season, good enough to win the EPL in many seasons.

Bet you don't rate Guardiola's stint at Barcelona either because the players he bought like Dani Alves were highly rated anyway and Xavi/Iniesta/Messi were always good.

I agree actually that Poch isn't at the tier of Pep, Conte, Heynckes, Ancelotti, Mourinho, Simeone etc. Those guys are elite. Poch doesn't quite get there until he moves to a bigger team or wins a title with Tottenham (no I don't count the caraboo cup). To say that Poch is the best manager over the last couple years in the EPL though, it might be reaching slightly. Top 2? Sure. He's certainly been better than Klopp, Pep since he's arrived, Mou at Chelsea/at United, Wenger. The only one with a shout is Conte but he's been here one season (let's not forget that Chelsea had NO european commitments) Let's see what happens now.

Anyway, I agree fully with BC who has a beautiful post.

No idea what real trophies are. He isn't winning the PL ever nor the CL.

This thread being bumped after a caraboo cup loss really speaks to how highly the club is regarded today, and Poch himself. Don't think anyone would have made a peep if Arsenal went out. Pool went out last round and the only person who posted about it was unique and other pool fans. Spurs go out and people lose their minds.

Other than the gross misrepresentation of what Poch said that RG posted, I can't be bothered with these responses because everyone knows if Spurs won this cup that it would be discredited immediately. It's not a winning situation. I agree with Poch though. Winning this cup doesn't do anything for Tottenham, and it's evident by what I just said. It would be discredited completely. Tottenham win something bigger and it fundamentally changes Spurs and the way people view them.

I don't think there is anything wrong with aiming high. I'd rather have that than a manager whose given up like at Arsenal

lmao typical GL kneejerk. Of course Poch would be furious today, he lost a 2-0 lead.

That being said I'm sure he would prefer to secure a top 4 finish and make a deep run in the CL so he can attract better talent than win this cup, as would most fans of most clubs.

Probably because Arsenal have won trophies recently, Tottenham haven't.

I can guarantee if you ask local Spurs fans, they are pissed.

Exactly. Wenger is the FA Cup GOAT. No other manager won it nearly as often. Of course noone is worried if Arsenal don't progress in the inferior League Cup.

Besides, they did progress.

I mean I would prefer to win too, I think Spurs winning the Halibut Cup would be great, but I'm not going to get too upset about being out of a third rate competition.

Someone tell me with a straight face that if Spurs won this competition that they wouldn't be laughed at. If Spurs won this competition the "no trophies" thing would turn to "won a third rate mickey mouse cup". Is that any better, really?

Poch knows this and so does everyone else. I'm glad he actually has the belief that he can win a title that changes things, has the belief that he can take Tottenham to a place where top players want to go and top players want to stay. Pochettino has a long term vision I respect.

Of course they are, and it's totally understandable. Not only did they lose a 2-0 lead, they also lost against a London rival.

No one would realistically laugh tbh, not seriously anyway. They'll be banter " Lol Cup " stuff like that but in the back of their minds unless they are on a very short list of teams who always win trophies they'll actually want the same thing.

Also i really don't see how progressing in this competition effects players staying and the long term vision really.

It doesn't affect it, that's the point. Nobody cares about the cup. Poch wants to transform the club and he knows winning a third rate club isn't how you do it.

He knows players care about winning, competing for the league, doing well in the CL. Those are his goals.

Frankly, nobody should be too upset about the League Cup. At the same time, when you haven't won anything in a decade, you can't justify dismissing the domestic cups on the basis that you might win a bigger prize. That just comes off as arrogant.

I've always found it contradictory to talk up breeding a winning mentality but then communicating to the players that it's okay to lose certain games. This will sound bitter, but Pochettino getting a free pass for not winning anything because he's building a great project is really annoying when every other top six manager would get criticised if their team went out a cup competition.

Spurs occupy this weird middle ground where they're competing at the top and making strides to becoming a genuine power in English football yet don't get anywhere near the amount of bullshit from fans/press that comes with it.

I still fail to see who is not criticizing him. Everyone agrees Spurs screwed up. It's just that the stakes are lower here, and the criticism is accordingly less intense.

Grossly misinterpreted Pochettino wrote:Our objective is to try to win the Premier League and the Champions League. For me, two real trophies.

That can really change your life. And then the FA Cup, of course, I would like to win.

I would like to win the Carabao Cup. But I think it will not change the life of Tottenham. If you want to be a big team and if you want to fight for big things, it's impossible if you don't use all the squad and rotate in England.

Players are not a machine. In Spain, France, German and Italy it's completely different.

I think we need to teach our fans because it's so difficult to fight for four competitions.

RG was actually correct in his quote.

Those comments would be fine if Spurs had any type of success short of finishing 2nd once.

Not sure where he gets off shitting on competitions he's never won.
