But why not Newcastle ? Arent they supposed to be a higher reputation/ attraction club than Hammers. They can easily get a young talented foreign coach if they want Imo. But they are just not doing it.

If Mike Ashley is business mined and dont give a damn about everything else about the club, even still isnt it fair to assume that he do know finishing higher on the table in the Premier League is actually THE way to make more money and improve his so called business.
And if his club is relegated wouldnt/shouldnt he fear that he will lose his money.

And its not like you are not spending as well. For a club of Newcastle's stature enough money is being flown out to acquire players.

The thing that they are selling players is a factor, players like Cabeye for instance. But unlike some other clubs at least they are scouting and getting players from foreign leagues. There is an attempt there.
Eventually yea if we take also the money got from transfers final figure is underwhelming and its true that there is no much ambition.

Excerpts from a Newcastle fan.

This isn't Tottenham's or even Southampton's pattern of expenditure. This is the expenditure of a club whose sole aim is not to get relegated, year on year. There is no other club in the BPL whose figures look remotely like this.

Which brings me to a few points in conclusion:

1. I fully agree that being in the black is generally a good thing - if the ultimate aim is to slowly improve, or to consolidate a position (e.g. Arsenal while they built the Emirates). That's not what's going on here. 13/14 shows no expenditure whatsoever, other than Remy who was a loan, why? Because the club had done too well previously, gotten into the EL, and almost gotten relegated as a result of the stresses placed on a tiny squad.

I don't agree that a football club should be run solely as a profit-making company, with no consideration for results on the pitch whatsoever - i.e. doing the minimum to avoid relegation every season and nothing more. But even if Ashley does, he has to see that he's walking a knife edge. One miscalculation sends us into the Championship, and we don't have the tightly-knit, English core (Barton, Carroll, Nolan) of a squad to bring us back up immediately again. One miscalculation means disaster.

2. We've made the most of the transfer spend because the signings made have generally been excellent value - Cabaye (£5m), Ba (free), Cisse (£10m), Sissoko (£2.5m), Colback (free). That's reflects a large degree of sheer luck and is ultimately unsustainable, even if it does reflect well on our scouting department. This season is an excellent example of why. Transfers just sometimes don't work out - this policy of doing "just enough" is, as I've said, unsustainable in the long run.

3. The Southampton analogy is interesting because they have aggressively targeted the best possible managers to make the maximum use of limited resources, e.g. sacking Adkins and replacing him with Pochettino. It's reflective of an active, energetic board sincerely trying to improve the club as far as possible. That's not what's happening here - we've stuck with Pardew not because we see him as the best possible candidate but a "good enough" candidate. This "good enough" mentality pervades every level of the club and is ultimately the source of most of the frustration.

4. I'd hang on to my hat before coming to any conclusions about Pardew on the basis of this season. He epitomizes the feasts or famines manager - last season we finished bang-average 10th, which masks as I've said an excellent first half and a P8 L7 second half. A few seasons ago we finished 5th, but we had been as high as third up till November IIRC. I'd be amazed if he can keep this up at CPFC - in fact, I actually wouldn't even be surprised, given CPFC's managerial volatility, if he wasn't in the job this time next season. The biggest Pardew thread on this board is, in fact, titled "When Will Pardew Get Sacked?"

Those players were only bought because we sold key players.

Also we haven't spent a penny above what we have sold since he bought the club. There's 100s of millions in the club which goes unspent every year.

The mere fact he never sacked Pardew despite the fact he consistently went on 20 game runs of crap and never sacked Carver despite it was obvious as hell he was well out of his depth.

I don't want to say much more, information of why he's an owner who spits on the very idea of sport is out there.

Newcastle's problem isn't the players they buy, imo, they have made some good acquisitions in the last few years, the problem is that the club has, deservedly, gotten this "mercenaries" image. The players are constantly in the shop window. That's not good for morale, the players start thinking only about themselves and stop playing for the team, don't care about the club, don't necessarily respect the manager. There's no collective desire to improve as a team, because the club treats the players as individual assets rather than a unit, a team.

There's a reason for that lol, the owner doesn’t care about any of these things. In fact he actively seeks to avoid it.

He doesn't want the team to improve because that would cost money, he would rather finish 17th every year than win a trophy because that would increase expectations and equal a higher profile.

In fact one of the biggest things he's done is actively seeking to dumb down expectations every year. To the point where staying in the premier league is now considering ok.

Newcastle United: Patrick Vieira no longer in frame for manager's job

Patrick Vieira is out of the running to become the new head coach of Newcastle United with ex-England manager Steve McClaren favourite to get the job.

Former Arsenal and Manchester City midfielder Vieira, 38, City's under-21 manager, had been considered as a replacement for John Carver.

But both parties opted not to pursue a possible deal following differences over recruitment and transfer policy.
