Modric is the best player in La Liga nowadays

Same Modric who wilts like a dying Orchid when pressed and whose passes bob like a beach ball on an Atlantic storm. Everytime he has the ball it looks as if he will produce something brilliant yet does not utilize options beyond is limited vision. The fact that he has to move so much on the ball to produce space for a pass, rather than having the technique to navigate the ball for his pass, tells it all.

Merely just a good player in his prime having the season of his life. Does not compare anywhere near the top-end of midfielders in this current stage.

To be complete you need a lot more than to have what Modric has.

+1, my thought exactly, moves way too much on the ball to make things happen. you can see the difference with Illarra whenever he is on, it's striking. Illarra has natural football intelligence modric will never have.

But that doesnt mean that Modric isnt having an excellent season, he should be praised without "but". He might not be as talented as some, but he is playing better than most which is an accomplishment on its own

Criticizing Modric has little to do with criticizing Madrid players in the form of Cristiano or Benzema i.e- two players I have defended all season.

Vision is being able to say ahead behind your points of navigation whether wide, deep or advanced. Modric's technique is successful is reaching his destinations yet his vision prevents him from truly dominating midfield's unless they are poorly equipped marabella scraps from Granada. His dwelling on the ball and need to navigate to search for space rather than using the position of his own players to playmake, is screaming of his limits. Players such as that never dominate bigger teams.

He is having an excellent season. But not the best player by any means.

Illaramendi's footballing IQ is off the charts, surprising considering I never expected him to reach such heights. In terms of raw talent Modric is blessed quite well yet this does not mean anything until he requires other uses of pre-requisites and actually finds propensity to use them to his advantage, rather than to cover his blatant weaknesses.

Modric indeed is having a great season, as what I enjoy about him is that he is in the position constantly to acquire the touches he needs on a consistent basis. Problem is, on the ball he isn't half as inspiring as the moment he receives the ball, which is then an afterthought of what could have been.

Arq, dont forget that Viision isnt all that matter for a player. The fact that he has the technique to get away from challenges, to retain possession without/before advancing the play is also a very good thing. You cant reduce him to his vision alone, because even if he lacks some, his technique complement his game and allows him to get things done. There are players with brilliant vision out there but who cant get away from challenges like him.

His game is an ensemble of things, he has strengths and weaknesses like everyone.

modric is a very good player, but have to agree with arq and nick in the fact he doesn't have the elite vision/football IQ to pick a pass instantly or get into position to make one, he needs to run a lot to make a decent mid range pass that defenders normally read anyway, cause it get obvious what his intentions are.

Excellent points, Nick. Another requisite I had to praise him for is that he possibly may be the best midfielder in navigating space to search for a pass (and shielding the ball). With the ball he is very swift and efficient in covering space to allow him to recognize pockets of space to pass into. My problem is that his passes do not have much purpose. No, this is not the "oh he just passes 5 yards back to the GK debate" as 5 yard backpass can even have a purpose. But many times I see passes for the sake of passing, which essentially does not build up to anything and leaves out options that could have been optimized upon, essentially my criticism of his lack of vision to play such a role. Notice how Madrid does not actually dominate midfields and with a build-up to tangible plays? Alonso on the other hand on a stand still can have his passes reach his mark along with having a reason behind every single pass. Sad Xabi is just too immobile for the modern game.

As said he is quite a good midfielder and very useful when utilized correctly, just does not compare to the top end of midfielders, or is rated higher than what he produces.

Edit: Modric did not dominate Espana. Rakatic and Vukojevic collective effort was far more influential. Modric had a solid 1st half though but phased out when we decided to actually press.

Modric limited vision? It only seems like that because he has the ability to dribble unlike other CM's.

Why is he compared to Illara, they are nothing alike. So far Illarramendi has been nothing but a bench player to Carlo.

Firstly that's not true and secondly performing against a tired team with ten men isn't impressing anybody.

Ill agree on one thing arq.. and I did say this as well.. he does linger on the ball a bit. However his athleticism and work rate are excellent and more then make up for it

I should watch a full Real game now, havent done so in while. That lineup looks godlike atm - Ronaldo, Benzema, Di Maria, Bale, Modric, Alonso. Interested to see how Alonso and Modric plays together, since initially appeared Modric might even replace Alonso.

Modric hardly ever gets mentioned when ppl talk about best players or teams, lets see how this year goes for him.

Ander Herrera = The best midfielder in Spain.

Arq needs to get in so we can hype FFS

Ander must fulfil some duties before he can be called that.

-Off the ball he is rash and doesn't do enough to off it to complete the dominance he sets-up on it.
-Presents little goal threat despite having excellent shooting from any foot.
-Goes under the radar versus teams he should easily dominate e.g Almeria or Rayo.


But I would certainly call him the most COMPLETE midfielder in Espana and even consistent.
