Re: The Movie House - Part 3
My weekend breakfast movie this morning was Zhang Yimou's The Flowers of War, starring Christian Bale and Ni Ni. Tells the story of the Rape of Nanking by the Japanese during the Sino-Japanese War just before World War II. Bale plays a sleazy American mortician in Nanking to bury a priest, Ni ni makes her film debut as Yu Mo, a stunningly beautiful red light district prostitute who takes refuge in a cathedral with her fellow courtesans, sharing it with Bale's character and a small group of convent girls. Basically the movie portrays Bale's attempts to protect the women in the church from the Japanese soldiers, who are committing brutal atrocities against women throughout the city.
I thought this movie to be quite good. Powerful story. Loved the performances of the virtually unknown female cast, but was not impressed with Bale's performance. I thought it a bit unnecessary. The priest didn't need to be American or even a Westerner for this to be an interesting story and I'm glad that this movie focused more on the girls and the women than it did on him.
All in all, this was a brutal movie based on one of the most brutal acts of violence I've ever heard of in the modern era of our history. It prompted me to fully read about research the Massacre of Nanking and what I read was truly shocking stuff. What I found even more shocking about this story is that to this very day, the Japanese continue to deny it ever happened. Such refusal to believe their own troops were capable of this is appalling. It really is the Forgotten Holocaust.

I watched V one night when I was a bit tired, hence couldn't follow it that well and got lost at one point.

Didn't really think it was that brilliant, saw it coming early on, still liked the film very much, but the best thing about the movie was the emotion portrayed by the lead actor, and the overall fight scenes and violence was terrific.Vibe wrote:Oldboy

The Usual Suspects, Shutter Island, Mystic River, Memento were my favourites.
Also like Unbreakable's.

Re: The Movie House - Part 3
I am still under impression...The realization of what's happening after the film mainly being vague to even hint it was really powerful. This is pure work of art.
Those films you mentioned are brilliant, but in comparison to Oldboy they are held back in the process of making them more viewer friendly (only in comparison to Oldboy though),while Oldboy has none of that. It's just a beast set free...Thanks to it being a non western production obviously.
After seeing it right now,for the first time in my life I can say with certainty which is the best film I've ever seen.

Re: The Movie House - Part 3
Well to each their own, definitely the best Asian film I have seen to date, haven't seen that many to judge properly. So if anyone has any movies in the style Oldboy, by which I mean a gritty movie with great fight scenes maybe. The Raid? can anyone recommend that one?Vibe wrote:I am still under impression...The realization of what's happening after the film mainly being vague to even hint it was really powerful. This is pure work of art.

Like you said, the lead actor's emotion and strong performance and the raw edge to it makes it what it is with that amazing plot twist.

Had Oldboy saved to my computer for mooooooooonths. Need to get around to it.
I saw The Counselor, some decent performances, but movie was pretty mediocre overall, I felt. Kinda a waste considering the talent involved.

Watched Dallas Buyers Club last night and enjoyed it. McConaughey and Leto deserved their Oscars. I would recommend it. Didn't think it was spectacular but it was a pretty good movie.
Started watching Blue is the Warmest Color just to watch the beginning, but was hooked and watched about an hour of it. Only really stopped because it was 2 AM and I had two more hours to go, and I plan on watching it with my brother.

Just watched this. Quite a good movie. I saw the plot twist coming towards the end, but kept watching because I wasn't sure if they would catch him. Kevin Spacey was great. Watched Blue is the Warmest Colour. Enjoyed this one as well, probably more so than Dallas Buyers Club. A comprehensive look at love, confusion, innocence, and heartbreak. Loved the blue imagery throughout the film as well. I thought it was interesting due to the lesbian dynamic though-- not too different from your typical relationship, but it did have a bit of a different spin to it.
Lesbian sex scenes were
Really long though. Probably could have cut 30 minutes out and have worked it out just fine. 3 hours. Still, I enjoyed myself the whole time, and the main character Adele was fantastic imo.
Probably one of the better movies I've watched in recent times, though I think I preferred Her.

Seems like you prefer the warmer more human emotional movies than the raw, intense action ones?CBarca wrote:Watched Blue is the Warmest Colour.
