Re: Captain Fantastic || *Name is Bond, James Bond*
Love the man to death and sad that he didn't achieve something great with his nation. It clearly meant a lot to him.
But for selfish reasons it is about time if not a bit overdue. It was quite clear after both WC2010 and Euro 2012 that this generation was never going to win anything special. He could've even extended his career a bit with us maybe until 40ish, who knows, if he quit NT early.
But 114 caps 3rd All time One of the longest serving captains as well I believe.

Was he? Because I think he was made captain only for South Africa 2010 when Terry was stripped of it. Or maybe from a WC to the next WC was enough to make him one of the longest serving captains, I don't know, just would have imagined it required a longer period.

Not exactly talking about the actual longevity in years, but more in games played as captain.

Actually just checked and he's the 5th longest serving captain.
Billy Wright - 90 games as cap
Bobby Moore - 90
Bryan Robson - 65
David Beckham - 59
James Bond - 40

Well that's not bad at all.
Also, lol at that Beckham captaincy. The guy's a cover page boy, but not a leader in the sense Gerrard is.

This thread needs a bump, maybe even should be stickied on top of the page
PS. Needs 3 more goals for us to get into top 5 goalscorers in our clubs history. Currently 3 behind Fowler who has 183. Won't catch anyone else though. But top 5 is beyond amazing for a midfielder.
Should definitely get it this season, hopefully.
ALSO WE NEED A TROPHY 100% NOW THIS SEASON. Cannot let Stevie leave without lifting one final trophy.

Also 5 more appearances and he will break 700apps
He's currently 3rd in the all time list. Sadly won't be able to beat Carra (2nd) though who's got 737 as there aren't enough matches left.

Re: Captain Fantastic || *Name is Bond, James Bond*
These news were inevitable in the near future, but I thought 'in the near future' would be in 2016 or 2017. Not this, that in about 5 months' time Steven Gerrard will have played his last game for Liverpool
Feeling numb. Ends of eras don't come larger than this.

Okay so i was at a farewell for a Manc mate whose going to live in abu dabi, and the news broke, not only was there banter before because half my mates and my brother are united fans but i just sat in the living room with a few tears down my face whilst they were celebrating.
I knew it was coming, but too much emotions, again, the man the legend captain fantastic, no one will ever give me a better birthday present then he did in 05.

Oh my god, the weight of this is too much. No matter how much you knew already the fact that this is happening is heavy on the mind and the heart. There's an emptiness inside me.

Btw I don't think the PL allows for retiring of numbers but we should really withhold the number 8 from use for some period of time.
The meaning of that number is too grand for just anyone to wear it.

I've never agreed with the retiring of numbers, but I would say until Gerrard retires from the game entirely they should not let anyone else use his number. Still with us in spirit.

We have five games in 15 days starting from the 17th. How do you think Gerrard should be used during this period? One-half in all of these games or full-time in the semi-finals & the WHU game?

Re: Captain Fantastic || *Name is Bond, James Bond*
Apparently he's anyway an injury doubt for the Villa game, so he'll probably not start that one in any case.
If he starts against Chelsea away in the League Cup, their fans are going to give him so much 'banter' for the slip, btw.
