Re: Pepe vs Vermaelen
Vermaelen, better on the ball, better in the air, more versatile, less erratic, less violent
I'd much rather have Vermaelen on my team, he's the better defender for me.

He is less violent, but he is also pretty agressive in a good way. Good on the ball, good in the air. Good at tackling, not much gets past him. Not very slow either....

Re: Pepe vs Vermaelen
Vermaelen's only weakness is his positioning which can be sometimes iffy. He's also not as strong or as physical as Pepe, but he doesn't need to be with his skills. He ain't no slouch.
A better comparison would be Ramos vs. Vermaelen... Vermaelen shits all over Pepe in everything but strength. Oh, and he can't play DM but who cares.

Re: Pepe vs Vermaelen
Pepe is a better defender, but then again he is a mental patient. Pepe's tackling is better, he is faster, very good in the air, lot of positive things but very erratic. I personally think Pepe is the better CB, but I would take Vermaelen over him simply because of his mental problems, and also because Vermaelen is amazing too.

Re: Pepe vs Vermaelen
TBH Pepe is better, Pepe's only weakness is that he is inconsistent with it, but he shows up in big games and can be a rock at times.
He is also very fast for a CB, and faster than Vermaelen.

Re: Pepe vs Vermaelen
pepe is a better athlete , has more pace strength
and is pretty dominant in his tackling too
only problem is his balance issues , and sometimes he tends to lose it ..
a better defender than vermaelen for me but vermaelen is more reliable

Re: Pepe vs Vermaelen
A better comparison would be pepe vs pique.
Honestly, if the consistensy thing can be brought up, then walcott is the best in his position.
Verm is strength, consistent, a game-winner like terry and of leader material.
Pepe is more disciplined position-wise, but that doesnt mean verm isnt a better defender.
You can hate djourou or kos at times, but you can never hate verm.

If it wasn't for consistency Arshavin could be one of the greatest players ever!!goonbrain wrote:A better comparison would be pepe vs pique.

Nah in all seriousness, i think you're overrating walcott a bit. I think you forgot about robben too when you said Walcott was best in his position...

That was my point. Some one defended pepe with that consistency claim. The Verminator wrote:If it wasn't for consistency Arshavin could be one of the greatest players ever!!goonbrain wrote:A better comparison would be pepe vs pique.

Re: Pepe vs Vermaelen
dont take it the wrong way but i am willing to bet none of you see pepe regularly anyway ,except youtube videos of him massacring casquero or stepping on messi's hand .. you wont get an objective opinion out of that

Re: Pepe vs Vermaelen
But tbh you do want a player who can consistently perform well like Sagna. Without consistency you judge a players talent and skill. With consistency your also helping to judge them as a professional football player. That's how i see it...goonbrain wrote:That was my point. Re: Pepe vs Vermaelen
Pepe - LigaBBVA 2011/2012
2.2 tackles pg
2 interceptions ppg
4.2 clearences pg
0.9 times dribbled pg
0.6 blocked shots pg
1.1 fouls pg
51.3 passes pg @ 85.4%
Varmaelens - BPL 2011/2012
1.7 tackles pg
2.1 interceptions pg
3.9 clearences pg
0.1 dribbled pg
0.5 blocked shots pg
1.3 fouls pg
50 passes pg @ 84.4%
--------------------------------------------
The only category where Verm is better than Pepe in defense is being dribbled less and thats prob only because theres hardly a single decent dribbler in the BPL
The other stat is interceptions and it's 2.1 per game to Pepe's 2, hardly a difference worth mentioning.
Pepe all day everyday, oh and to all the idiots claiming Pepe is a thug look at that he fouls less per game than Verm.....

Re: Pepe vs Vermaelen
It's not just the fouls but the other stuff like, stomping on Messi's hand, kicking that guy that was on the ground (can't remember who). You rarely see The Verminator do that...
Surprised that Pepe's got a better pass accuracy. how many goals have they both racked up? Won't make much difference but would be interesting...
Edit: Looking at the stats again they are very very close. pepe's won more categories but they are both very close. Both are defenders that would walk straight into the starting 11 of many clubs....

Re: Pepe vs Vermaelen
Vermaelen played one third of those games as a Left Back
that affects his stats passing. shots blocked ETC
For example against Bolton as a LB he had 67% passing accuracy
vs Everton in CB with 86%PA
