Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is confident club captain Robin van Persie will sign a new contract.

Van Persie has scored nine goals in 13 games for Arsenal this season and his current deal runs until July 2013.

The Gunners have not yet officially begun negotiations with Van Persie, the only current player to have won a trophy with Arsenal.

But Wenger told BBC Sport: "He has 18 months to go and I'm confident he'll sign a new deal. I'm always confident."

Arsenal will be keen to hold onto his 28-year-old talisman following the departures of key players Samir Nasri, Cesc Fabregas and Gael Clichy during the summer transfer window.

However, Wenger brought in midfield duo Yossi Benayoun and Mikel Arteta, while defender Per Mertesacker and forward Ju-Young Park were also added to his new-look side.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger drew a standing ovation from shareholders at today's AGM.

He insists the supporters must not lose their faith.

Wenger told the AGM: "I believe the values we defend are highly defendable.

"We want to do things with class and be very brave. Courage is a quality I admire, because it is highly needed in the modern world.

"I can see a lot of fear and discontent among you - and I can understand that because we live in a world where we fight with people who have extremely high resources.

"We can compete by trying to be intelligent and to be united, because football is very difficult to be consistent and we have been more consistent than anybody in the world in the last 15 years."

The Arsenal manager added: "To stay at the top, top level we have to stay united.

"That does not mean not I am not to be criticised, or the board - we accept that, but we have to show to the outside we are united. If you are not, then you have no chance."

Premier League clubs are eager to take Chuks Aneke off Arsenal's hands in January.

The midfielder, an U17 European Championship winner with England, is expected to be made available for loan.

Wolves, West Bromwich Albion and Wigan Athletic are all keen on Aneke, says skysports.com.

Arsenal could let him leave on a short-term basis for a Championship club before securing a loan switch to a Premier League rival.

Which out of,Wolves,WBA and Wigan should be preferred by Arsenal??

Manchester City are interested in FC Basle winger Xherdan Shaqiri.

Naples sources say Napoli face competition from City for the 20 year-old Switzerland international.

Indeed, intermediaries say it is City which now lead the race for Shaqiri, who could be on the move in January.

The midfielder has also been watched extensively by Arsenal and Newcastle United.

Anzhi are preparing an offer for Arsenal defender Sebastien Squillaci.

The Frenchman has struggled to make an impact at the Gunners since his arrival last year from Sevilla.

Anzhi are now ready to take Squillaci off Arsenal's hands and are hope to do business for around €1.7 million.

Squillaci's way to the first team is now further blocked this season by the arrival of Per Mertesacker.

Really? WBA?? I would never send a player there if it were up to me.. I was really pissed with the lack of chances Vela got there, even though his appearances always got them a positive impact.

Football consultant Alex Flynn: "Chelsea, Man United, Man City and Liverpool have all spent £30m+ on players, Arsenal haven't" ....

Flynn: "Arsenal have not spent half of £30m on a player. Arsenal are in danger of being left behind and standing still"

Flynn: "One of the saddest moments of the AGM was Arsene Wenger saying 'We aim to finish 4th. Arsenal should be aiming higher."
