Was meh before the assist, gain loads of confidence after that, ran circles arond Pirlo, got Pirlo booked. But I wont say he was wow, good at best.

What player does he remind you of? Which position does he play best?

I have to admit I've never really seen him play, only once for German U18 I think.

This may not be the best estimation...
But what about Xavi?

Merkel's main game is passing (both short and long) and rarely does any tricks but does have the ability to pull them off. Very unselfish and very much a team player.

I didn't see the Genoa game to know how he was used in their system and this is a comparison made off observations from only two Milan games, however Merkel reminds me slightly of Toni Kroos, though he's still quite raw.

From what I heard, VfB Stuttgart wasn't so amused with Merkel because his school marks weren't so good and that's why he went to Genoa. Silly VfB probably should kept him anyway. ^^

Merkel's just misunderstood. Like most rich, famous and handsome people :coffee: Seriously though, whilst I look for intelligence in others, not everybody does and Merkel's going to brush up as cute as anything, he's going to be incredibly marketable Razz

It's important for clubs to care about their player's education in order to ensure that they are insured against tragedy in their career and so as to still be responsible adults when interacting with society and living life after football. It's a strange reason to pass on talent though.

He transferred to Milan not Genoa in 2008 though, we sent him to Genoa on a co-ownership during the summer.

Who was that poster again from the old forum who hated everything German and raved about Merkel until he found out he was going to play for Germany and not Russia?

I can't remember anything specific, though I can only think of Grande Milano as a Russian Milan fan, though I can't remember any specific comment from him on Merkel.

Personally I'm still hoping to steal him for Italy. He's Russian-German-Kazakh-Belorussian as it is, one more won't hurt. Razz We need to get him married to a nice Italian girl as soon as possible though, I'm sure Berlusconi has someone lined up :coffee:

Well, so far he played in the German U15 up to U19. We'll see if Löw can convince him to decide to play for the Germany seniors, too.
