Munich's Breno arrested after fire in his house Empty Munich's Breno arrested after fire in his house

Bayern Munich's Breno has been arrested over a fire which caused over a million euros worth of damage to his home.

The 21-year-old was held by the Munich Prosecutor's office on suspicion of grave arson after the blaze, in the early of Wednesday, gutted the house.

The defender was alone in the house when the fire broke out but managed to escape and was treated in hospital for smoke inhalation, police said.

He, his wife and their three children had been re-housed by the club.

What the hell?
Why would he try to burn down his house?? Money troubles and an attempted insurance fraud or what's going on? Just being plain mad? Or have the police got it all wrong?

And damn, three kids and the guy is only 21-years-old, that's quite an achievement already xD

Well, atm this case is talked about on TV with some football experts. They assume it might be a combination of his frustration about his frequent injuries, him going away from Brazil when he was too young and the fact that his contract is running out. It seems that he was severely drunk and then snapped and laid fire to his house.

I wonder if it wouldn't be better to put him into psychiatric treatment instead of imprisoning him, though.

Ah, well, thanks for that bit of info, RowboatPower.

I take it that his footballing future was looking poorer than kicking it away at Bayern Munich, then? I mean, you really have to be quite stupid (and mad) to simply burn down your house, but if he was hoping to get some insurance money while knowing his new contract at whatever club that would be wouldn't be too lucrative, maybe that would go some way explaining it?

I don't think it was about money at all. I have more the impression he was probably steering towards a depression, too, as there was a high pressure on him.

He came to Germany when he was just 17 and was touted as one of the world's next superstars. Unfortunately he got injured again and again and then loaned out when he couldn't fulfill the expectancies put into him. Add to that the abuse he got by press and fans (he was seen as failure as defender - just read up here in the forum, and of course this was the opinion in German press and forums everywhere, too) - so it is a high possibility that a not 100% stable youngster (he is only 21!) might totally snap.

3 years for lighting your house on fire? That is just really really harsh and unfair to a youngster.

"Ouch" indeed. I would have thought they'd give him 2 years and put him on probation, but now he has to stay in prison for at least 2 years (normally about a third of a prison sentence gets waived if a prisoner behaves well in prison in Germany). On the other hand, he could have gotten up to ten years, so he was moderately lucky, it seems.

Actually the maximum sentence for grave arson is 10 years of prison, so Breno got a somewhat moderate sentence after all.

"Harsh and unfair?" Forget arson, there are at least three different other crimes/misdemeanours he committed there

But prison for more than 3 years Rwo? It is obvious he did it deliberately, but you should also take into account his mental state at the time.

I think a few months jail time and counseling would have sufficed.

Well, as the German system goes, he will very likely be pardoned after 2 years if he behaves well in prison.

and rapists get probation more often than not... german law is ricidulous.

however, it's not like he made a bonfire. he burned down a big ass villa. that involves some concious action, not to mention that his children, wife and manager (who was there on the night) could have been killed.

This sentense doesn't make sense whatsever. Typical Germany! We let rapists and child molesters run around with one year probation yet someone who burns a house gets close to 5 years

http://www.welt.de/regionales/hamburg/article106181903/Hamburger-Sex-Lehrer-erhaelt-Bewaehrungsstrafe.html

Read this. A teach had sex with a 14 year old girl for months. He got 1 year probation time  Even worse, that guy is the father of a 16 year old teenager himself.

RWO, it doesn't make sense whatsever. I'd understand if he tried insurance fraud or ' fahrlässiger Mordsversuch'. The guy didn't do either. He burnt the house with no one present in it.

From what I understood, the judges argued that he couldn't be sure that the house was really empty. And the damage was in the million Euros region, which was also considered aggravating the charge.

Here's some more info now (in German):
http://www.transfermarkt.de/de/brenos-fussballmaerchen-endet-im-gefaengnis-/news/anzeigen_95384.html

"Of course he is falling now from great height", Judge Datzmann said in the reasons given for the judgment. But that didn't merit any special treatment. "The defendant heaped heavy guilt upon himself with his deed", she said. And: "There are people with much more difficult life circumstances, with less money and far less public attention."

well, from what i understand it was consensual Sex and no rape. And it's only illegal because he was her "Schutzbefohlener"/teacher, wich obviously is unethical, but for all we know there might never have been any bad feelings between these two...

Sex with a 14 year old and as a teacher is a crime in my eyes. Kids are easily manipulated into doing things adults wouldn't hence they're kids.
Would a normal girl date a 46 year old father of another teenager? Most likely no...

Still, one year on probation isn't enough. It's like inviting people to exercise crimes on minors.

and when that trained crashed on a bridge in Germany killing 100's of people thereby, no one single person was found guilty, even paying out compensation was a problem because you can't even prosecute a company in Germany.

What a messed up judicial system...

How do you give him almost 4 years, when you know of his mental state at the time of the act.

Poor Breno, wish you all the best.

If the Judge was a woman end of thread..

Women are usually very harsh in their judgement and abuses power at times, that's my personal opinion.

How do you give a young man like him almost 4 years, it's not going to make him a better person, if he had criminal records then fine.

I thought the most he'll get will be high fine and probation.

What a messed up woman.

But then again, arson is taking seriously all over the world by most judicial system.

Burning down your own house can result to burning down an entire city thereby killing lots of people, it's never encourage and Judges are usually harsh on defendant.

But Breno case is different because he had mental problems, that should have been taken into consideration

Not only that, he is the father of two kids. I bet that woman doesn't even have her own children. Her justification is even more weird if you knew German. It makes more sense to get money for the lost property than sending someone to jail because you feel sorry for the owner Shocked
