My advice to anyone struggling with Tactical Defending: don't bother with trying to contain. Configure your controls so that A/X is tackle, and B/O is call for secondary pressure. Made things a bit easier for me.

That is EXACTLY what I did lol... What's the point of a contain button when you can use L2/LT and just manually contain??

After playing a few more games I've changed my opinion: I won't be buying the game when it comes out.

Now I'll be the first to admit that I'm not the greatest at playing FIFA, but I don't need to be good to be able to spot the blatant flaws in the game, and the most blatant I've noticed is that AI attackers simply move too fast with and without the ball for defending to even work properly.

I understand that to defend properly you have to position yourself correctly and time your tackle, but this is made incredibly difficult because the attacker is too quick. As soon as you get close to him, he just turns and leaves you completely for dead and once that happens, there's no one covering for your error.

Basically, mistime your tackle and you're screwed. Royally.

Then when you have to chase an attacker with a defender, the attacker will always win. It's gone from extreme to the other, since in FIFA11 defenders were ridiculously quick. Now, attacks are super fast while your defenders have no pace at all. Doesn't matter who the defender is; he'll always lose out in a foot race with the attacker.

Not to mention that you get zero help from your midfield. Midfielders don't track runs, don't come back and help and just stand about doing nothing, pretty much.

So really, I'm finding defending to be far more trouble than it's actually worth. I tried Legacy Defending and experienced the same thing. Even if you pressure the player and jockey him, he's simply too quick in comparison to the defenders.

And I'm not going to waste any money on a game that's clearly going to frustrate me more than entertain me.

Thanks Jay, I was thinking about buying it, I think I will rent it and see how it is for myself and then decide to buy it.

Try this(tactical defending on):

Every time the opponent gets the ball or passes the ball, switch player(LB or L1) and then just hold contain(X or A). I've done this on every difficulty and it has worked for me, you then simply move around until you are CERTAIN you will win the ball. You can do it all day and they can't score unless they pull off something freak.

The other thing to do is try and anticipate by using the "second main contain"(RB or R1). Which sends a different man towards the player with the ball, meaning you can work out where they are trying to play and stop it. Very often you're able to pick out the man, then as soon as they pass it to that player you press tackle(B or O) and you can usually win the ball.

Again it's just getting used to the new style. If you haven't played against other people then i'd highly advise you do so. People make many more mistakes passing wise and will also make defensive mistakes the same way you do.

For me personally apart from getting used to the game I much prefer Online/friends to playing against AI, but maybe you'll learn to enjoy it Smile

I don't play online, though, so playing against other people isn't really going to have much of a baring on my opinion.

I've tried secondary pressure/calling a second man and it's the same problem; opposition moves too fast for the second player to get close to him and tackle the ball.

Maybe I'll give it another crack once I've calmed down a bit - I pretty much rage quit - and have looked at some more tips and advice. As it is, this learning curve is proving to be too big to bother with for a more casual gamer like myself.

I don't have the same issues as you Jay, try doing as lszanto said and use the contain defending, it works pretty well against AI.

Anyway, I think they fixed Messi, he has really high balance and agility so its hard to knock him off the ball like in reality. He's a beast now but only 4 star skill moves.... not sure if serious EA Suspect
