August player of the month award
August was a testing month for the club. It saw Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri leave the Emirates whilst defeats to Liverpool and Man United have the left the side near the bottom of the table. Positively, Arsene Wenger brought in several new players. Per Mertesacker, Andre Santos, Mikel Arteta, Yossi Benayoun and Park Chu-Young all arrived during the last week of the transfer window which has improved the morale amongst Arsenal fans.
There weren't many stand-out performers during the month though the following still had good months.
Robin van Persie
Van Persie started in 4 of Arsenal's 5 games during August (he was suspended for the 1st leg v Udinese) scoring twice. He scored a vital goal away at Udinese at a time when Arsenal were under serious pressure. He missed a penalty at Old Trafford and missed another chance, though he did score in the game with a fine finish from close range.
Theo Walcott
Walcott had a fine month at a time when the team struggled. He began the season on the bench at Newcastle after recovering from injury. But he started the 1st leg against Udinese scoring early on with a fine finish. He had a quiet game against Liverpool but then scored against Udinese again in Italy with a classy finish after Sagna's through ball. He also scored at Old Trafford and won a penalty (though he did give away a penalty too). Overall Walcott scored 3 in 4 starts and enjoyed a strong individual month.
Gervinho
The final part of the front 3 - Gervinho - had a good start to his Arsenal career. Gervinho was sent off on his debut, though replays showed he should have had a penalty. Gervinho therefore missed the games against Liverpool and Man United, but shone against Udinese in Italy. He was exceptional at times and set up Van Persie's goal. He terrorized the Udinese full-backs switching wings constantly.
Honorable Mentions:
Thomas Vermaelen (Had a solid season so far until injury forced him out of the Man United game)
Woijech Szczesny (Made a crucial penalty save in Udine)
Bacary Sagna (Playing out of position at left-back for most of the season, solid performer)
Tomas Rosicky (Had a good start, was excellent in Italy coming on at half time)

For me THOMAS VERMAELEN..
Our defence looked strong when he was on and crumbled into pieces when we missed him...
Walcott was good.. RVP scored some but still well short of his best..

Re: August player of the month award
Vermaelen and Sagna should be there. Without those two our season would already be dead.
On a side note why on earth is RVP on this list, don't get me wrong he is world class, but he has been crap this month. He missed a sitter against Liverpool, when it was 0-0, that crap penalty at OT that made Almunia's younger brother look good.
And Gervinho, he's still banned in the PL for crying out loud, one assist could have been two over the two legs, but still nowhere near player of the month.
Vermaelen & Sagna for me, both saved Arsenal's season with selfless displays in all their games that they have played in.

Re: August player of the month award
It has to be Vermaelen for me.
Sure, van Persie and Walcott both scored goals but in terms of all-round performance they really haven't been that great. They've only really played well in the Udinese game in Italy.
Gervinho has only played three games and has been more flash than substance so far.
Really, it's been a disappointing month from an offensive standpoint. Defensively we've been better, which is going to sound weird consideirng we shipped 8 goals last week but we know there are certain cirumstances surrounding that i.e. the missing Thomas Vermaelen, who, in every game, has been rock solid. Even in the Liverpool game where he had Miquel and Jenkinson in his back four and Sagna playing out of positon he still excelled.
I really do think Vermaelen has been our best player by a distance last month.
If there's a second and third place than it should be Sagna, just for being our second best defender, and Szczesny for his form before the United game.
