Re: The Missing Link : Nuri Sahin
It's not unusual for top athletes to have their own doctors... in fact, it's 99% what happens. What you do need, however, is a top quality physical therapy and physical training team.
Any athlete who relies on a team's medical team to diagnose him and treat him is being foolish.

Re: The Missing Link : Nuri Sahin
As far as state-of-the-art and cutting edge treatments and physical therapy, I'd go to Germany. There's this new procedure called platelet-rich plasma therapy (PRP) where you basically take your own blood, enhance it, and then reinject it into the injured area. It's supposed to be a miracle worker for athletes. Kobe Bryant did it over the summer on his knee... i hope our medical team stays informed on these things.

Sometimes, it sounds like sports would be a better director of the medical team than the one we must have right now...

He does doesn't he. But Sanitas would probably beat with his knowledge about the technicalities of that subject area unless he (Sport) is actually a doctor himself...

Of course they'd know more lol. But here's the thing about doctors... they are basically slaves to drug companies and their training. They make money by performing surgeries, seeing patients, performing procedures, give speeches, etc. They have very little or no incentive to seek out and recommend alternative medicine because it does nothing for their pockets.
Cancer treatment is the biggest example of this. A dear friend of mine had stage 1 breast cancer at a very young age (due to birth control pills; but that's another story). Because of the type of cancer she had, they recommended radiation and then surgery and then kemo. It got to the kemo stage. I helped here research it and it's insane that everyone is forced to do full kemo. There are so many variations of kemo and alternatives that have just as good or better a recovery rate. In fact, kemo will heal one thing and kill you in other ways. She went with an alternative path, neither lost her hair nor had to stop working during the process... she has now been cancer-free for 3 years. What sickened me is that her doctors would try to scare her into doing kemo as opposed to even considering alternatives. And these were probably the best doctors in their specialty in California.
Since then, i have 1% confidence in doctors and medecine. They can diagnose me... but i'll do my own research and will have to be convinced before i make a decision on whether i go with the recommended prognosis and treatment.

Re: The Missing Link : Nuri Sahin
My point with the long post above is that Sanitas may not always have the best motives... they're a large health group and probably have a lot of interests and influences that would not necessarily lead to the best path for our athletes.

Well normally I would say as long as there is no surgery involved, Sanitas can handle it but, they screwed that up......................

Re: The Missing Link : Nuri Sahin
very different in germany.doctors with sponsors look for similar treatments from their sponsor catalog but still apply what you need the most. docs are straictly monitored by health insurance companies they cant prescribe something just for the sake of money. only dentists or cosmetic chirurgs can cheat but you dont die from expensive teeth, hehehehehesportsczy wrote:Doc wrote:Saetablanca wrote:Sometimes, it sounds like sports would be a better director of the medical team than the one we must have right now...

I did say 'director of medical team', I know sport isnt exactly a doctor...
Interesting idea, but I wouldnt trust myself over trained doctors to chose which treatment. Maybe its different here.

I Just get 2nd and 3rd opinions and ask an alternative medicine doctor too on important stuff. That's all i meant. On minor things, it doesn't matter.

Im not familiar with the situation you describe about doctors, drug companies, and such. As I said, maybe over here it's different.

Yeah. We have no public health system, big pharma and big insurance in the US. Medicine is a huge business... people's well being is often relegated to 2nd in terms of importance unfortunately. Only people who can afford it get truly great medical care here. Most of the people are left with second rate care. The number of uninsured people that can't get healthcare is astounding to me (in 2007, it was 17% of the population. It's apparently well over 25% now).
Now that i'm back i France, it's a bit more normal.

Ah, you were talking about the US, no wonder. Healthwise, free public health system is great, even though it brings tons of problems and we cant afford it.
