If you know anything about Kobe you won’t suggest they cancel games for him. He’d want them to play.
Great gesture by Raptors and Spurs to start the game with 24 second violations
oh god, even in a legend's death you try to make everything about "you knowing better"
postponing tonight's game would have been the most reasonable, humane thing to do for everyone involved in the NBA not just the players
It’s not me insinuating they’re being disrespectful by honouring what the victims would probably want.
Cancelling games would just seem like tragedy porn and a tasteless way to exploit the death. More than it already is.
Also by playing they get a chance to take their mind off things for a while and show support for the families.
Do you think they wouldn’t have postponed if players all wanted to?
I know the players didnt want that racist ass dress code David Stern dragged out after Malice at the Palace...

He'd be balling his eyes out regardless, this isn't the sort of pain that suddenly goes away if they get the night off.
Kobe would want the games to go ahead, also if individuals don't think they can play I'm sure teams won't begrudge them.

I have no thoughts on whether the game should be postponed or not but given the way a league runs and the cogs behind it is a huge financial cost to just shut down and postpone the game middle of it. For all we know this gives the players extra motive to play in his memory. Knowing Bryant himself he definitely would not want a game shut down for him.
I do not disagree with the sentiment of the opposite argument as well.
But this does not need to be a debate at the moment.

I'm watching a Rockets vs Nuggest stream and they absolutely should've postponed this game. It's actually ridiculous, no one is in the mood to play, all these players either played with Kobe, played against him, are his friends, or grew up idolizing him.

Even the worst corporate jobs give you bereavement days. A coach just cant nope out when their players also sad.
What Kobe wants should play no part in this tonight. He was consigned to oblivion with his daughter this morning. How we should react in honoring the legacy of a man who was the NBA for large parts of us growing up should be the deciding factor. If the NBA cant shut down out of respect for him, who can it shut down for?

Also I don't think Betty read my load management/rest/etc. comment correctly.
What I'm saying is, that if they can take time off, or a game of to rest of all reasons, then fair play to them. But then they sure as hell should take a game of if they feel they can't play because of grief. Because mental health is so much more important than having fresh legs. It should be encouraged, but bear in mind that you can't rest your way out of feeling like this. It takes a long time and for the players closest to him it'll probably never ever go away.
I still cry about losing my uncle 15 years ago sometimes. The only time the grief was manageable for me when it happened was when I was playing sports with my closest friends.

It's not really about what Kobe would of wanted, more so that postponing the games doesn't do much. There's games tomorrow, the players won't be in the mental state to play then either.
It doesn't have the effect you think it does, but i agree with Arq i don't think it's appropriate to debate this right now.

Yeah I agree. I'll drop it.
Anyway here's my two of my favourite moments ever from him even though it weren't the most important from a team stand point:

Honestly I can see the viewpoint after seeing it written...I dont know I am not rational at all right now.
There are things in life when both mind and body cry in protest of the news. Its crazy how much he was apart of the Zeitgeist of life for those of us born in the late 80's/early 90's. He was everything.
I remember wanting to be him. How he was national news at Lower Merrion HS. How he was able to have Brandi take him to prom. The AOL headine of him dunking on Jordan. It really fucking hurts. i cant even keep a dry eye typing these memories. His baby girl with him. Jesus fucking christ man. I gotta log off.
Stay safe out there bros.

We all are, said earlier this is the death ( apart from Family and friends) that has effected me the most. I've felt physically ill since the news broke.
The fact his daughter was with him makes it even worse.

Yeah, this isn't sitting right with me either. Kobe was...different. Seeing Doc Rivers cry like that isn't helping matters either. My first ever NBA Live game I saved up to buy for PC was because he was on the cover (NBA Live 98). Sigh. As far as sporting figures passing, I think this one actually hurts the soul.

Re: The Official Dwayne Wade <<<<<< you thread
I am sorry for the closer fans of Kobe on what he meant to them as celebrity deaths I usually could not care less about but icons like this do hit hard because they are such inspirations and his quote about Heroes come and Go but Legends are forever will be attributed to him. Still remember his late 90s to mid-2000s days where I followed him the most and just my general disdain for Jackson's Lakers. What a player he was.
Shame his latest daughter was just born in mid-year of 2019 as well.
Hope Milan give a great tribute to him due to their connection with him. That would be nice.
NBA games should not be shut down but I would have them all wear his name including his number.

I'm pretty sure they'll a huge tribute weekend for him at all star weekend in 3 weeks I think.
Someone on twitter suggested one team all wear 24 and another 8. And it seemed to make a lot of sense.

This hits so much harder now. Watched it a couple times.
It taps into the essence of what Basketball fans fell in love with about him as an athlete and competitor. And I think other people can see/feel that now, even though the movie was trashed a lot at the time.
