There is "genuine concern" Premier League footballer Emiliano Sala was on a flight missing off Alderney.

It is feared the Argentine striker was one of two people on board the Piper Malibu, which disappeared near the Casquets lighthouse on Monday night.

The plane was travelling from Nantes in France to Cardiff.

A coastguard rescue helicopter and crews from Alderney and Guernsey RNLI joined the search in the area around the lighthouse.

HM Coastguard said the disappearance was not in the UK search and rescue area, but it had sent two helicopters to help.

A spokeswoman said they were assisting Guernsey Coastguard with a search for a light aircraft off Alderney: "HM Coastguard helicopters from Solent and Newquay have been helping to search overnight with nothing found."

The search and rescue operation had to deal with worsening conditions as they scoured the area on Monday night.

Terrible news. What were the odds? Cardiff's record signing very likely no more. Sad

Oh shit No

Hope they survived

Very slim chances of survival considering the weather conditions.

Terrible news, he seemed like a really good guy from the few interviews I've seen.

Sad news. I wonder if Cardiff get back any of that £15m or does Nantes keep all of the fee still...

Presumed dead now. Awful stuff.

No idea why he couldn't have just taken a normal flight?

You're right, if the normal flights had advertised better that they don't crash, none of this would've happened! Clubber

With RG on this one, personal and smaller planes have a much much higher probability of crashing. I don't know why, maybe because there is less auto pilot and more manual controls involved?

The guy did something almost any business man would do, these instances keep reminding me to live life to the fullest each day, shit can happen any time. :/

Truly sad news, my first reaction seeing that plane was like RG, why in the world was he flying a cesna? I know it's not a cesna but that's what it looked like, with the money these players make you except them in top of the lines jets, and so on... If he is gone, then RIP

Worst part is that he complained about the plane before when he travelled with it. Told his teammate how terrified he was at one point...

It was a single engined plane. Travelling through the english channel on that in this weather...

Compare that to travelling in something like British airways. Why not just be a bit normal?

Really scary and worrying developments about Sala.

I hope he is found safe but it's not looking good.

Unfortunately there is only one certain outcome in these scenarios.

I've been reading up on this, and it's not pretty.

Cardiff offered Sala a commercial flight but Sala declined, as he had already made arrangements.

The arrangements were reportedly made by an agent in the deal.

He laid on a 30-year-old Malibu plane that only seated six passengers.

The pilot had experience flying for skydivers but nothing else.

The weather was not favorable for flying over the channel. They were flying over choppy waters at night with a snow storm approaching the UK. There was a strong chance that ice would have formed on the aircraft, which would have affected controls and potentially caused failure.

Even if the pilot managed a successful water landing, the aircraft would have sunk within 15 minutes, according to other pilots.

Even if they had managed to get onto a life raft, the conditions in the channels would have made it extremely difficult to stay afloat and find land.

The facts are still emerging, but signs are that this was an unnecessary loss of life, which makes it even more tragic.
