Actually a terrible year for American dramas so far. Most of my favourites other than those are comedies or foreign language films. Can’t wait to watch Burning next week.
Then again. Nothing has really come out yet. Beale Street is one I’m really looking forward to as I love Moonlight so much and Barry Jenkins is one of the most emotional expressionistic filmmakers I’ve ever seen.
My girl Regina King finally getting that Oscar also
The only thing egregious about eighth grade is Josh Hamilton not being nominated. He and Sam Elliott has had the two best supporting male performances this year.
Dude. List please. I have Burning with me (Havent yet watched as I am waiting for decent subtitles) and also has a movie called Dogman.
I loved Lars Von Trier’s new film. While it’s not English, I feel the entire film so incredibly Danish in its humour and expression, which is shown by how many American critics completely miss the point of the film.
Then we’ve got:
The guilty l (fine Danish one location drama. Think you’ll like it. I got spoiled by a customer at work though.
Roma
Shoplifters
Heartbound
Utøya: 22. Juli (horrific drama that pained me to watch so much).
Those five are all great imo. Shoplifters and Roma are both in my top 3-5 of the year. They’re masterpieces and some of the most beautiful movies I’ve seen. Shoplifters from an emotional level, and Roma from
An aesthetic.
Cold War and Burning are released this week. So I’ll watch them next week and report back.
Cheers.

Touch of Evil is great although Third Man is my favorite Orson Welles movie. I always have trouble with not including Orson Welles in my top 10 movie directors, him and Frank Capra. The Madrid One wrote:I need to watch Touch of Evil again, this scene was awesome, remember when i first watched this scene with a few other people, it was awkward lol.

Cold War was an aesthetically pleasing movie, though nothing masterful or even great. Not really emotional engaging at any point. It’s fine overall. Was hopeful for more from this dude, but I guess he’s not for me. At least his B/W films.

Burning is coming this Thursday. Will try to catch it then.
High hopes for this one. Steven Yeun has impressed me since leaving that shit tv-series.

What Scandinavian movies have you watched other than that?
I'm not even that well-versed in Danish cinema, which I should probably be.
We've got the worst mainstream cinema of all countries though. Some truly awful stuff.
The only must watch of the newer stuff is probably The Celebration though. Widely regarded as the best Danish movie since Dreyer.

I can only remember The Hunt starring Mads Mikkelsen off the top of my head right now.
Name a few other good ones, I'll have a look out for The Celebration.

The Netflix/Andy Serkis take on The Jungle Book just might be my favorite incarnation of the story. Enjoyed it more than I expected.

Watched GATTACA again, it's a pretty good film with several things going for it. Great production design, cinematography, concept, themes, lines... Not a masterpiece but pretty good. Just love that sleek, minimalist, yet retro european thing in the framing, lighting, and everything of this scene.

Glad to hear actually.
Jon Favreau's rendition turned out surprisingly well even if it lacked the classic depth of the original and an empty feeling overall.
Serkis' one is based more on the Kipling book than the Disney rendition but was criticised for its CGI. Did that affect your experience?
Bad timing apparently has resulted in its failure as well and that is obvious as to why.
The voice cast seems far more exciting with Christian Bale as Bagheera and Benedict Cumberbatch as Sher Khan.

Re: The Movie House - Part 10
The cast were pretty good though Serkis' accent for Baloo will sound weird when heard. Cate Blanchett, to me at least, was the standout as Kaa. Her voice is just something else. I think I prefer Elba's voice for Shere Khan, but with Cumberbatch's animation and movement.
Rohan Chand, the kid who plays Mowgli, does a great job as well.

Re: The Movie House - Part 11
I watched Bird box the other day. It is a solid 8/10 film with high intensity moments and unusual twists. The film deserves acclodates for telling a story which is very difficult to convey in the manner they did. The story emphasised more on characters and less on zombies. Definitely worth a watch but not Oscar worthy for sure. The hype is getting out of hand for some reason.
Re: The Movie House - Part 11
Not a single person ever has suggested it should receive an Oscar.
It got meme’d a bunch and was a commercial success (at least that’s what Netflix is telling us).

If you wanna watch a good movie on Netflix, watch Andhadhun. Best Hindi movie I've seen since Gangs of Wasseypur. Dark, hilarious, suspenseful, and twisted. I was very impressed.

Not a fan of Sandra Bullock so Bird Box doesn't interest me in the least. Strangely enough, neither does that new Black Mirror movie that's out.

Curious to see what you think about the ending.
- Spoiler:
- There's a theory that the poison made him half blind because the rabbit was half blind.
It's either that or he changed the last part of his story and did in fact sell the woman to Dubai and got his retinal replacement.

- Spoiler:
- I don't think he was half blind because when he was tied with Tabu's character she fools him by giving wrong instructions. He making up the story seems to be the more possible option, but again even this version has some loop holes like the rabbit was introduced to us even before any of the characters were so it was not supposed to be the imagination of some character and secondly how did he know that rabbit saved his life if he was really blind. So yeah am clueless about the ending as of now.

@M99 I was curious about this movie from the way you guys are talking about it, but I know I am not gonna watch it any time soon. So I clicked on your spoiler comment.
That's a real rollercoaster. How in the world are these things connected?? that's a collection of sentences that has never been written before.

Randomly watched "Searching". Was very well done.
It's about a daughter going missing and you see everything from the perspective of the dad using his computer/phone/FaceTime etc while trying to find information. Has several plot twists and a surprising ending.
