Re: The Movie House - Part 11
wonder if I'm biased but been watching random late 90s to early 2000s movies of an evening here and there lately
golden era tbh, much more diverse than now too, classics in every genre, sequels and superhero tripe all we get now
if you don't enjoy a teen slasher or teen romance movie do not @ me
crime movies were great then too
remember when your parents got enthusiastic about those ancient looking movies that would randomly be on TV when you were a kid? the ones from when they were kids? and you would be disgusted because they would seem so outdated, completely understand it now
Starting to feel old

Watched Shoplifters some days ago. Great film. That tiny girl was the most adorable thing I’ve seen in years.

A Star is Born
3.5/5
good performances from the two leads, but the writing did not stitch it up to its potential (lack of character background, doesn't even shine bright as a "Hollywood" rags-to-riches film), so nothing special really as some might make it out to be. Solid directing debut by Cooper however, and somewhat better and more bearable than Crazy Heart, even though indeed the similarities in plot-points are obvious like I pointed out when I saw the trailer.

American Psycho (2000)
When you think you have seen the most absurd films out there...
I don't even know where to begin.
Hallucination? Schizophrenia? Reality? Half n half? Deep political satire? A study on human nature in regards to wealth? A delusional narcissist with schizophrenia? Was he the american psycho or was the film showing the society as full of psychopaths?
That film is so deep i don't see myself climbing out of it anytime soon.
One thing for sure. Bale is just incredible.

If you think the film is absurd, read the book. The movie is vanilla compared to that. And I mean gluten-free soja beans vanilla.
There is a 3 page long detailed description of fitting a living rat into a vagina.

Watched Escape from New York.
I love snake man. Wish there were more films in the series. I even liked the sequel. Amazing character.
I wonder if Carpenter got the inspiration from mad max. A lot of similarities in terms of setting.
Also he is a very underrated sound artist. I like how he does score for his own films.

Great movie. Think Solid Snake was based off him iirc.

Carlito's way (1993)
Incredible film. Al Pacino is definitely one of my all time favourites.
Those last 30 minutes

I saw Carlito's way at least 10 times it's one of my favourite films of Al Pacino. I rate it way above Scarface.

The Girl with All the Gifts (2016)
If you wanted a fresh take on the zombie genre, there it is.
Think it's definitely one of my favourite dystopian films. Imaginative, thought provoking, suspenseful and intriguing. It will hook you from the first minute till last.
Controversial ending though but i am glad they did that.
I'd highly recommend it.

The Quiet Earth (1985)
What an incredible sci-fi film. I am not a huge fan of the sci-fi genre but being a post-apocalyptic film helped massively. Specially the appeal of 'being the last person alive on earth'
I really loved how the film kept asking the viewer about how they would react in the same situation. A great analysis on human psych.
But the best part of the film was the ending. Left me speechless. If you think you like an open ended film, this goes way beyond that lol.

Panic in Year Zero! (1962)
So I didn't know it was a 'B' movie before going in. But it was apparent with the extremely low budget. However it wasn't a bad film. It was quite like a social commentary on how human behaviour varies in a post-apocalyptic world and the issues they can face. It was different to other post-apoc films as this was mainly drama and not action. Raised some great themes but couldn't do justice to them due to budget and probably being a 60s film.
I liked the main actor Ray Milland.
Also it's really strange that when you watch an old film, the gender divide is so obvious.
6.9/10

I wouldn't be surprised if the IP I see behind his account points to somewhere in Greenwich Village or Tribeca.
