I assume you say that because you see those people as pretentious and inauthentic?Freeza wrote:I don't mind a director being repetitive when he's the only great contributor to that sort of storytelling. And also, he's done more straightforward stories also, Elephant Man and The Straight Story.
Still need to watch Twin Peaks though.
Find the critics who put Twin Peaks season 3 on their list of favourite movies to be complete imbeciles. Worst kind of idiots out there, and I would've fired them if I owned whatever publicaations they work for.
Season 3 is a bit of an acquired taste, and the way it messes with expectations, to the point of purposely disappointing its viewers to make several points, is something i can respect.
Really pretentious. Like the most blatant shit I've seen. Cahiers du Cinéma had them as the no.1 film of last year.
It's just shitting on an entire medium by saying "It's too good to be your medium". There's no valid reason to describe Twin Peaks as anything other than a TV Series. It was released weekly on a god damn TV station, while literally being called "The Return" of something established as a TV show

Re: The Movie House - Part 11
Most of them, but never been that much of a fan, kind of one time watch worthy, although Twin Peaks for me is top 3 tv-series ever. Tbh many directors recycle their ideas through movies, you could say that's their identity. I've lately found movie composers even more annoying, who watched Dunkirk and thought it sounded like another Batman sequel? What a fucking fail from Zimmer. The Madrid One wrote:Has anyone seen David Lynch's films? I think they are brilliant, but i do have a minor...gripe.
- Movie Spoilers:
I find it interesting how he basically recycled the same elements in Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive, Inland Empire.
i.e.., Character in the threshold of death has a hallucination/dream where he/she tries to come to terms with the pain in their lives and their inevitable death. Experimental dream logic is given context by it being revealed at the end of the film that it was all a "dream" of some sort. All these films also contain postmodernist references to the real world and to the viewer, particularly Lost Highway and Inland Empire, by virtue of how they address the relationship between camera, films, story, viewer, and experience. Twin Peaks, particularly the third season, engages in this thing as well, by questioning reality throughout. It just seems he explores the same territory, with some differences of course. It is all affected by his own interpretations and interests in life, such as transcendental meditation.

Speaking about Lynchian stuff, just watched Under the Silver Lake by David Robert Mitchell which is getting Mulholland Drive comparisons, and I think rightfully so.

Better than Black Klansman, which is also great.
Bohemian Rhapsody is just a bad movie all around though. Ideal movie for the casual Queen fan who doesn’t know anything about the group and also loves Jimmy Fallon’s lip sync battles.

Re: The Movie House - Part 11
I have these above it:
A Star Is Born
MI Fallout
Widows
A Quiet Place
Actually a terrible year for American dramas so far. Most of my favourites other than those are comedies or foreign language films. Can’t wait to watch Burning next week.
Then again. Nothing has really come out yet. Beale Street is one I’m really looking forward to as I love Moonlight so much and Barry Jenkins is one of the most emotional expressionistic filmmakers I’ve ever seen.
My girl Regina King finally getting that Oscar also
The only thing egregious about eighth grade is Josh Hamilton not being nominated. He and Sam Elliott has had the two best supporting male performances this year.

It was more due to you mentioning Black Panther as some mistake when it’s actually good compared to that Queen abomination

Limited unfortunately. It's a trip though! Maybe the ending could have tried to been a bit more WOW, but still, I fell for it. It seems to be a divisive film at the moment.

People need to watch Sorry To Bother You. Won't get any awards recognition but is comfortably better than most movies dominated. This is especially for those complaining about repating plots because trust me, this is very different
Buster Scruggs too, really good film.

Re: The Movie House - Part 11
Full SAG award nominees:
Notable Movie Snubs - Widows, If Beale Street Could Talk, Roma, First Man, The Hate U Give, The Death of Stalin
Notable Individual Snubs - Regina King (Beale Street) , Claire Foy (First Man), Ethan Hawke (First Reformed), Toni Collette (Hereditary), Joaquin Phoenix (You Were Never Really Here), Steve Carrell (Beautiful Boy)
------------------------
I can't say I've seen any of the movies that were snubbed so I have absolutely no frame of reference at all for them. The Regina King one really has my twitter feed on fire though. That one appears to have really struck nerves. I'm very surprised by the Steve Carrell one as Beautiful Boy looks great. I hope he gets something for Welcome to Marwen as that one looks special.
Lots of head-scratching as to why Bohemian Rhapsody got nominated so many times as well. Another one I haven't seen so I have no real opinion on it though.
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role:
Christian Bale, “Vice”
Bradley Cooper, “A Star Is Born”
Rami Malek, “Bohemian Rhapsody”

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role:
Emily Blunt, “Mary Poppins Returns”
Glenn Close, “The Wife”
Olivia Colman, “The Favourite”
Lady Gaga, “A Star Is Born”
Melissa McCarthy, “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role:
Mahershala Ali, “Green Book”
Timothee Chalamet, “Beautiful Boy”
Adam Driver, “BlacKkKlansman”
Sam Elliott, “A Star Is Born”
Richard E. Grant, “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role:

I loved Lars Von Trier’s new film. While it’s not English, I feel the entire film so incredibly Danish in its humour and expression, which is shown by how many American critics completely miss the point of the film.
Then we’ve got:
The guilty l (fine Danish one location drama. Think you’ll like it. I got spoiled by a customer at work though.
Roma
Shoplifters
Heartbound
Utøya: 22. Juli (horrific drama that pained me to watch so much).
Those five are all great imo. Shoplifters and Roma are both in my top 3-5 of the year. They’re masterpieces and some of the most beautiful movies I’ve seen. Shoplifters from an emotional level, and Roma from
An aesthetic.
Cold War and Burning are released this week. So I’ll watch them next week and report back.

Re: The Movie House - Part 11
I still have no idea why Bohemian Rhapsody gets nominations. I’m sorry, but delivering a Freddie Mercury impression without singing isn’t impressive to me. Especially when you make him sound like a woman, when he was pretty masculine in his expressions imo.
Seems like non-Queen fans really think this is a spot on performance because they forced those teeth into Rami Malek’s mouth. Also don’t think Rami Malek is that good.
_____
It seems obvious to me Bradley Cooper will sweep the awards as actor though.
He’s “due” as it’ll be his fourth nomination. He nails the role a drunk depressed guy with tinnitus. It’s really incredible how well he gives that role, and I pick up something new with each viewing. Also the fact that he does his own singing, in a Sam Elliott impression while it sounds natural and good at the same time is a miracle. He’s so talented and hard working, but makes it seem effortless.
He’s the biggest movie star we have right now I’d say.

Of course haven't seen many of the performances nominated, but hopefully my boy Bale can pack up that Best Actor and go home.

You’re really going to say any of what I said is wrong? Cooper is incredible in that role. His writing is also impeccable. The dialogue is A+ love how there’s so much repeating of words etc, makes it realistic and fits with the tinnitus.
Also he’s one of the most versatile actors out there. He’s done so much different stuff. Just waiting for a real thriller villain turn now. His villain in Wedding Crashers is hall of fame though.
Can’t wait for Vice despite the disappointing reviews. But I hate when people get Awards for makeup performances. This is Bale’s first, and it’s a combination of makeup and transformation.
