not exactly the first time a manager announced he was leaving before the world cup. This is definitely the first time a coach is sacked in these circumstances.

last world cup Van Gaal announced he was going to Man Yoo just before the world cup, diffirent circumstances but they went to the final. i think any team going to a WC would call that a successful campaign.

I think they should have involved the spanish FA in the conversation to sign Lopetegui, but this is why he is being sacked. Make no mistakes, he isnt sacked because he is leaving, he is sacked because Rubiales did not know about it until 5 minutes before our press release.

This is why i am saying it's 100% pride. Even in the things he is saying today, it's pride. All he has been doing since he was appointed, pride. He is acting like a white knight but he just fcked spain because he could not keep his ego out of it

RFEF were pissed because they gave him a new deal three weeks ago only for him to negotiate with another club, so I understand the decision from that perspective. It was unprofessional from Lopetegui and RFEF don't want to look like they're being bullied by Madrid or anyone. I understand a big part of Rubiales' philosophy here is to clean things up and make them stronger.

On the other hand, they've just lost any chance they've had of winning the World Cup. For the sake of Spain, it would have made more sense to let him coach the team at the World Cup. The players were apparently happy for him to continue, so what's the problem?

And of course, it's daft on Madrid's and Lopetegui's part to announce the deal just before the World Cup. I don't know why they did that.

He literally signed a contract extension less than a month ago. He had a long term contract, signed an extension (2 years iirc, to the euros), and then within 2 weeks made a deal with Madrid.

This is another stupid mistake he made. He prepared for 2 years for this, and then when its game time he throws it all away. This is the WC, this is it in football. He is supposed to lead a country that has all the reasons in the world to target a win and he throws it (and his work) away.

i am not a fan of how negotiations went down between Lopetegui and Madrid, and not involving the spanish FA. i wont support what they did.

but it happened and in the face of a difficult situation, i think they made the wrong call. THey have cause, obviously, but it's not the right time. and listening to what the president said today, i feel even more strongly about this.

what he basically said is "How dare they did not call me? I am the boss. I control the narrative. i am going to teach them a lesson. Lopetegui out. Oh the world cup? who cares, this is about me, how dare they did not tell me"

For a guy who used to be Union president for the players, not surprised one bit. but he needs to scale his mindset to the job at hands now. the players told him they were ok. but no he made it about himself.

It certainly wasn't the right time for Lopetegui to sign for Real either
