Fully welcome Rami Malek's rise. Guy is an incredible actor.

Rami Malek is great and I'm happy he's rising in popularity but he doesn't really look like Freddy Mercury. I'm sure with makeup it'll be fine though. Queen biopic is long overdue as is The Beatles biopic.

Well Gary Oldman doesn't really look like Winston Churchill, but here he is:

If he can pull this off, I'm confident Rami Malek can do Freddie Mercury if he's as good an actor as we all believe him to be.

Old Man can pull anything off acting-wise.

As much as he is a chameleon, this is all the make-up department though

This must be the first time an actual person of middle eastern descent play a real life person of middle eastern descent. Some progress, finally.

Friends and I did a marathon of the 3 Star Trek movies yesterday in which I finally got around to watching Star Trek Beyond, which I hadn't seen before.

I'm not a Trekkie, but my friends remarked that it was the most "Star Trek" of the 3 reboots and I suppose I can see why. This one didn't feel as standalone-ish as the other 2. This one felt like an episode from the original series, just with a lot of CGI and effects and such.

However, I think Idris Elba's Krall was the weakest villain of all 3 movies though it's maybe a toss up between him and Eric Bana's villain, Nero. His backstory was a lot cooler and more tragic than Nero's, but the execution of the character just wasn't good. Felt more like Ultron sans Spader's awesome voice with the particularly boring mini-monologues and quips.

Yorktown was awesomely designed though. Very trippy, Inception-like. I supposed I'm in for more of that with Dr. Strange. Also loved the locust-like ships that Krall commanded, although not particularly original. Still cool nonetheless.

Officially added the score of this trilogy to my soundtrack collection. Michael Giacchino did great work on all 3 movies.

Went to see Hell or High Water yesterday. Technically a very well made and acted movie. The story didn't do so much for me at the end of the day. Still a good watch.
3.5/5

While there before the movie, I saw a trailer for Jonas Cuaron's (Alfonso Cuaron's son) movie Desierto. It looked like one of those movies that'll either do quite well or fail bad time. And from a simple google search it looks like its the latter.

Yeah Neal, I saw Star Trek Beyond last night as well.

Decent. 7.6/10. Around the same I rated Into Darnkess and the 2009 film.

Didn't even know Idris Elba was in the film but the second I heard Krall talk I knew it was him. But yeah he was avery meh villain.

I just don't really like Idris as a villain these days. Stringer Bell remains his best bad guy role by a country mile. Hell, that's probably still his best role period still, it could be argued. Krall was simply too bland.

Saw A Prophet (Un Prophète) 2009 French film this weekend.

2nd best prison drama after Shawshank imo. Very good movie. It's a 3 hour movie but didn't feel like it was dragging or anything. Reminded me a lot of The Godfather and the rise of Michael Corleone.

I'd rank it top 5 of all foreign language films I've seen and liked.

Incendies
Downfall
City of God
Tropa De Elite
A Prophet

The Raid: Redemption
Headhunters
Train to Busan
I saw the Devil

Probably also my favourite foreign film, I'm not sure. It's up there though with Spirited Away and The Double Life of Veronique though.

Wasn't a big fan of City of God.

I've seen Starred Up. It's very meh compared to A Prophet.

Next on the list is: The Lives of Others(German), The Intouchables (French), and Life is Beautiful (Italian).

I'll put the rest on my list to maybe eventually watch it.

The Hunt
Festen (The Celebration)
Flickering Lights
Pusher Trilogy
Bænken (The Bench)
Adams Æbler (Adam's apples)

Those are my favourite Danish ones.

Favourite non-english or Danish is Apocalypto though. Love that movie. Perfect thriller.

Incendies
Then there's also a lot of asian movies, but you've all seen them anyways Laughing
Force Majeure is pretty good

If you choose to watch another, please make it Festen. It's the best Scandinavian movie ever imo. It's absolutely unsettling.

It's also by far the best Dogme95 movie.

Also, Mads Mikkelsen is in half of the Danish movies that are worth watching.

Infernal Affairs is what Martin Scorsese adapted as The Departed and its as good if not better. Its in my top 5 for the 2000s.

No thanks Jeff. I love The Departed, don't want anything changing my view of it. Plus if it's adopted then I pretty much know the whole story of the movie already.

Emma's been trying to sell this movie on this thread since 2011 Laughing

Not really, the ending's different, there's no Mark Wahlberg character, no love triangle.

If anyone ever responds with "cartoon rofl " to a Miyazaki film, they're going straight to my ignore list

Tbf while I strongly disagree with people saying "cartoon" to the amazing series that is The Last Airbender, I at least understand it somewhat. Does have a lot of kid humor, was aired on nickelodeon etc. Easy to have misconceptions about the series. Miyazaki is completely different. It's alright if it's not your taste but you're deluded if you try to reduce Miyazaki films.

Anyway, going to check out Gone Girl tomorrow probs, EDIT: Thursday Sad

Really didn't like Infernal Affairs that much. The editing and fast take scene after fast take scene put me off so much.

Kind of haven't been enjoying foreign films as much as of late. The last foreign film I really loved was In the Mood for Love, and oh yeah it also happens to be up there on my list. Top 3 foreign film definitely.

i've seen it. Decent 3 to 4 out of 5 imo. I gave it 4 I think, mainly because of its quirky unique concept, and Gosling's acting. It's sweet and sad at the same time as you would expect. I would say go for it Glory, knowing that this is the type of film you would like.
