Elche relegated from La Liga

Despite finishing in 13th place, Elche have officially been relegated. And fined, 180303.63 euros (yes, 63 cents as well).

The reason: financial irregularities. Eibar were the ones who reported this according to the news, in the hope of staying in the Primera. Elche guaranteed the LFP that all tax debts would have been cleared by the end of August but the ruling judge did not agree with this claim.

So as it stands now, Eibar will stay in the Primera and Elche will be relegated to the Segunda. But it is very possible that the club will relegate to the Segunda B.

It upsets me to read about the protests. Elche realized an excellent season considering the circumstances faced and in spite of their financial irregularities. The club entered the season with the second lowest wage (12.5 million) in the Primera . The only club with lower wages was Almería (11.7 million).

This means that Eibar, who were the fairytale of La Liga, still had paid more marginally than Elche. This is how the "bottom 10" of the wage bill would look compared to the "bottom 10" of the table. I am using Excel for this table so it will look very basic.



When you consider the generally positive correlation between wages and results, it can be seen that Elche were one of the greatest over-achievers in the Primera. Maybe even the best. The stories of the club not paying the footballers have been rampant over the season. In one case, the players refused to take part in the press conferences until they were paid.

Maybe the club will declare bankruptcy which will almost certainly result in regulation to the Segunda B. Maybe this is the last season Elche will play in the Primera for a long time.

You know, the way Eibar were relegated is very surprising. They were excellent in the first months. In fact, the pre-views of the season almost always had Eibar at the bottom. I believe by January, they were the highest ranked Basque club ahead of both La Real and Athletic.

The fall was spectacular and unexpected in how steep it was. But what is most interesting is what will happen with the coach Garitano. He resigned after the regelation saying that he failed as the coach. The only goal was to stay in the Primera but he failed.

Now that Eibar are back in the Primera, what happens? I will try to maintain updates regarding both clubs.

Elche were our whipping boys. 18-0 against them this season. I'm actually sad tbh. Eibar were much tougher nut to crack. Uncle Flo and Refdrid at it again.

Damn, all the way to 3rd division?! How do they expect them to come up with the money for their fine, let alone their huge debts, if they do this.

I am not an expert on the finances, but from reading El País :

“Es la mayor injusticia que se ha cometido en el fútbol español y vamos a luchar hasta las últimas consecuencias”, anuncia Juan Anguix, presidente del Elche. Tiene abierta durante los próximos quince días la vía del recurso al Tribunal Administrativo del Deporte e incluso en última instancia la de la justicia ordinaria, pero también un nuevo desafío que ahora se presume complicado de resolver: abonar el dinero que adeuda a los futbolistas (el goteo de denuncias situará la cantidad a pagar más allá de los seis millones de euros) antes del 31 de julio. Si no lo consigue acabará en Segunda B.

And I believe that if the club claims bankruptcy they are automatically relegated to 2B.
