the best argentina national team from 1990s till now
what is the best argentina national team from 1990s till now?
a) in term of style ala brazil 1982
or
b) in term of success
my opinion, for point (a), its between argentina 2006 & argentina 1998, but i choose 2006 one cause it played one of the best football i ever see in national level & it provided 2 of the best goals ever in wc
for point (b), its between argentina 1990 & argentina 2014, but i choose 2014 one cause its not as ugly as 1990 one

Are we including the 1990 team? If so I don't know if the 2006 team would make the top 3
In terms of style 2002 >>>>
In terms of success 1990=2014, although 1993 won the Copa America so maybe that has an edge (would consider it being roughly the 1990 generation though).

Anyway I say : Argentina 2002 , many great players in his prime , maybe it was the best NT on paper in that World Cup , I can't still believe they were knocked out from group stage
Veron played a shocking match against England, I 've read some Argentinians think he was vendido lol I understand it's strange to watch Veron playing badly

If you google images "Veron ingles" you'll find thousands of images about it

based on this video alone, argentina 2002 vs nigeria, my comment are this team was relied heavily on individual rather than teamwork, just like brazil 2002
unlike argentina 2006 which was one of the best teamwork i ever seen in national level

In term of style, Argentina WC '06 team all the way. They deserved the trophy no less than any other team in that tournament. I still remember that team to this day.
In term of success, I'd probably pick Argentina WC '14 team.

I've never seen Veron performing so badly
Worst Veron match ever no doubts

In terms of success 1990=2014 ,
but in terms of style 1990 is the worst than all tbf ffs
Probably the only Argentina ( based only on an unreal player) among these teams who played simply to speculate , so as to reach the penalty kicks and never football.
It was manna from heaven the penalty kick scored by Brehme....
No , I am not crying for that bottle job in semi final

Re: the best argentina national team from 1990s till now
agree with @lupi, best 98, result 2014. that 98 squad was pretty good; 02 can't make my list, you can't be considered good when you get knocked out in the first round, especially when you've come in as one of the favorites (they were considered better than brazil prior to the 02 world cup, which wasn't surprising as brazil found qualification tough).
on paper the 2014 team is probably the best, a lot of elite players playing elite level football at elite clubs, who have had the benefits of winning many club awards. on paper 2014 for sure.
the 1990 team shouldn't even be in this discussion, yes they got to the finals, thanks in no small part to a pk specialist sub goal keeper, some dodgy strategies and defending tactics, another diego hand-ball which was less talked about than the one against england but maybe even more influential, and diego's ability to at times pull them out of the romp with his ability to control the game's temp from midfield, though his peak had passed by then

Re: the best argentina national team from 1990s till now
Argentina 1998 is my favourite team among them.
The first thing I remind about that team is Abel Balbo to win the runoff on Caniggia for the 22nd shirt. ( I read always teletext at that time )
Argentinian people wanted Caniggia, hero of the people very loved in Argentina, but at the end Passerella was careless about it and he chose Balbo.
It looked like a normal thing for me at the time and I didn't understand because of these discussions , Balbo was legit in Serie A ( always appreciated) , and I didn't know that Caniggia at that time . He played in Boca Juniors.
ffs just a mad could prefer a player who played well in Serie A to an old player back in Argentina.
Nay . I am thinking Maradona did it in 2010 . Well , according Aristotelian syllogism Maradona is a mad
11 on 22 played ( Ayala Chamot Pineda Almeyda Sensini Simeone Batistuta Veron A Balbo Crespo Zanetti , basically my infancy lol ) in Serie A so it looked like a 2nd team for me . And expecially because there were Zanetti and Simeone who were immense for my club that year.
Then for me France 98 is special .
It was also the first time I cried for a football match (after penalty kicks against France ) . And I don't think it depends on fact it was the first WC seen by me (and anyone tends to mythologize the past ) but there was more overall quality than now for me . It looks like a no contest imo . So many legends in that WC and better teams than now ( Italy ffs ) .... Spain is one of few NTs to be improved than 98 . But it 's enough to compare the 2 semi-finals ... Croatia would have destroyed the average Brazil 2014 and it's better not compare the 2 Netherlands..
Anyway , I remind to have seen that Argentina - England 1998 and it was one of most beautiful World Cup matches seen from me .
I believed they 'd have passed against Netherlands after that match but evidently I had underrated that Netherlands under Hiddink who played great football.
Or , more simply, Dennis Bergkamp.
I think Argentina 98 could reach the semi-final if they didn't go at extra time against England. It had a negative effect on them.
But maybe it was better so for me . That Argentina was great ( for example, I don't know saying when Batistuta or Zanetti were "in their prime " , because I don't remember to have seen them normal in their career except when they were finished ) but they wouldn't have stopped that Ronaldo
It's enough to realize how much was high that potential of Argentina if you think Batistuta was the best CF in that year after Ronaldo , or at least easily top 5.
He was unplaybale in some matches. Infact Fiorentina would have won the Scudetto the year after ( under Trapattoni , a manager more pragmatic than Malesani , sometimes excessively offensive) if Batistuta wouldn't have injured

Re: the best argentina national team from 1990s till now
i still can't believe passarella didn't pick redondo in that squad, he was at his peak in the late 90s early 00s, at the time i heard it was over a haircut (passarella wanting redondo to shorten his hair), but i was never sure if this was one of those rumors that took a life of its own or if it was legit. who knows that may have been the same for caniggia, who imo despite his speed, could be very inconsistent. the love argentina fans had for him stemmed mainly from his 1990 goal vs brazil and the two vs nigeria in 94...i just never understood how caniggia was clamored for like a cult hero in 98, yet i didn't hear much said about redondo, who would have most likely had a significant impact on that team

redondo was at the peak at that time but as usual, argentina coach was not as clever as other big national coach when it come to picking the best eleven
