You know, this GL award thing suffers from the same problem that the Golden Ball suffers from (only inverted). Neither collecting everything into "1 best player" nor singling out isolated positions ("CB", "RB", "FB", "CAM" etc) does the players real justice.

Obviously you can't really compare goalies with strikers or midfielders, but similarly it is a crime to punish players for their versatility (eg if you wonder what exactly Philipp Lahm or David Alaba or Thomas Müller are playing...).

I guess the best thing would really be to set up the categories "Goalie", "Defense", "Midfield" and "Attack" - and even there you run into the problem with defense/midfield and attack/midfield.

In the GL setup, especially Bundesliga players suffer as they seem to be far more versatile than many players in other leagues, it seems.

1) Best Goalkeeper of 2014 : COURTOIS
2) Best Left Back of 2014 : hardest choice, Luis and Coentrao were very good last year, Marcelo has been by far the best this season.
3) Best CB of 2014 : PEPE
4) Best Right Back of 2014 CARVAJAL
5) Best DM/Regista/DLP of 2014 KROOS
6) Best CM(B2B, playmaker etc) of 2014 MODRIC
7) Best CAM(SS counts) of 2014 MESSI
8 ) Best Left Forward of 2014 RONALDO
9) Best Right Forward of 2014 ROBBEN
10) Best Central Forward of 2014 COSTA
11) Best Manager of 2014 CARLO
12) Best overall player of 2014 RONALDO

Why awards are done yearly for Europe is beyond me...

For me there are not doubts about Simeone best manager of 2014, he got something of unreal.

Not even the most optimistic Colchonero could imagine Liga won + CL final ( and it was winning till 90' ), but not even one of 2 things...

Basically because Masche does not have the positional discipline to play lone DM, he will always chase after the ball and he can only do that if there's someone to cover for him. In the WC that was Gago and Biglia. At Barca it would have to be old man Xavi or Rakitic, but the press would sacrifice anyone that playe a double pivot.
