Perfect signing, I saw him play live in the preseason and he's a quality defender. I wonder how he fits into Pep's scheme though.

Still it was Bayern who could take him for 30m, so I'm quite sure the other teams didn't rate him that high, which is kinda stupid. So farfan's got some truth in there.

30m is a great price.

I liked the Mathieu signing but I agree with you on Verm, they should have went after Benatia instead. I'm going to assume Benatia was intent on staying when they inquired on his availability earlier in the window and only recently changed his stance otherwise Zubi *bleep* that up badly.

Still, only Barca, Bayern and United had any use for him.

I think timing has a lot to do with it.

I could imagine that at the beginning of the window Roma demanded a much higher fee, possibly an amount that deterred Barca, as it maybe kind of deterred us as well.
After all we were said to be interested in Benatia in spring etc., but then decided we didn't really need another CB, which might be connected that the one we would have wanted was too expensive at that time.

Then we were out as suitors, Barca and City bought defenders, and then we came back in just the other week after Javi's injury.

Maybe that's the reason, by now Roma realized Benatia wasn't extending and they weren't going to get as much as their initial posturing.

Still doesn't explain why Barca weren't still after him.
Both Mathieu and Vermaelen are left-footed.
The ban got confirmed.
Maybe they didn't have enough money after all?
They're still looking at adding a right back/right wingback if I'm not mistaken, and maybe they really blew too much on Suarez to pay 30m for Benatia on top of it?
Or maybe the new manager simply didn't want him that much hmm

Roma are monstrously stupid. PGS, Barca, etc. offered them 40 mil at the start of the transfer window and they asked for 50. Now that the market for CB went away... they sold him for 30 to Bayern. What are they thinking lol.

What is the source??? Go to any paper that follows Barca and look back at the Benatia stories from June and July. They were offering massive amounts for him and Roma wanted over 40 (since the offer was 40).

As far as PSG... the rumors were that they were after Pjanic and Benatia, but that Roma wanted too much money for both. They both came to a PSG game in May in Paris.
