Second of all, thing is Benatia is only 27, he has 5-6 years of prime left. We're not talking about a player who's soon expected to decline.
Selling a player at the start of his prime, and replacing him with a prospect is what you'd expect from a feeder club.
You agree with me about Astori? Well I got news for you son! I changed my mind, Astori is the next great of Calcio.
So that's twice you've disagreed with me today. Pack your shit and get out ffs.
LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
But your points have weight in them, though Benatia sale was timed based on his attitude shown to depart Roma, to which for the locker room would have been caustic. 30m for a CB with one great season at age of 27, in my opinion is fantastic given the highly touted replacement who is actually proven.
My main point actually was to state how underrated Castan was last season as I felt he was as good as his counterpart and does not get the credit he deserves.
But obviously since your farmhand gopher brain won't understand that, this was a waste of time.

Loooooooooooool
Really it depends on how you see Benatia at this stage
If he's reaching his prime and carries on like he did at Roma then it was a pretty bad deal for Roma
If he had a fluke season under R.G (Inb4RG) then it was good business
Either way u dun got urself into reeeeaaaaal trouble-like

not sure why people keep repeating this " one great season " .
he had 3 great seasons at udinese in which he was instrumental in 3 consecutive top 4 finishes ( for the only time in the club's history btw ) .

He was auditioning for 3 days in Freiburg, in 2009, who were looking for a CB. He was playing in the 2nd French league..
Freiburg declined him back then, with the then sport director saying "we have high standards in that area, he hasn't got the quality. We don't need a 'thumper'"

Re: Official: Mehdi Benatia signs for Bayern Munich
Meh, there was no way he was getting quadruple his salary after 1 season....1 good season, I'll give him...we doubled his salary and he scoffed at it. There's nothing more Roma could've done from that perspective. Within reason, anyway.
Where Sabatini disappointed was with the fee negotiated, but whatever....it's better this way ultimately. We still got more than twice what we paid for him. Just a shame we didn't get triple.

huh ? they're a selling club because they sold one player who relentlessly pushed for a move ?
they brought in like 15 new players and kept all but one of last season's starting 11 ( including highly sought after strootman )

Yes they are. Hell, there new model is based on selling there best players and then replacing them with the young talented players they've bought.
For the past years, they've constantly sold important players. Vucinic, Aquilani, Mancini etc.
Last year (with new mgmt), they sold Lamela, Marqinhos and Osvaldo. Now they've sold Benatia.
And nobody's going to buy a player who's suffered a serious knee injury, without seeing him come back first. And Roma will likely sell Pjanic and Strootman (if he comes back to form) by next summer. But with there new strategy they have replacements in Ucan/Paredes and Rabiot.
I think they'll be able to hold on to the young players though. They will likely have qualified by CL yearly and they'll have a new stadium.

Re: Official: Mehdi Benatia signs for Bayern Munich
All the good players they sold in the past turned out to have reached their prime at Roma and didnt have anything else left when they sold them. Perhaps Roma are just that good at spotting when a player is worth the most, and that he most likely wont be able to reproduce that level the next season, and decides to sell because of age /alrdy spotted a talent they think can match him etc.

Re: Official: Mehdi Benatia signs for Bayern Munich
We are not an elite-level club and due to that, we must sell when the price is right and the conditions are right. For Benatia, I don't agree with the price, but from a business perspective it was a favorable deal and the player wanted out anyway. We'd be hard pressed to find a club who would block a move like that.
So I tend to agree in general. We are a selling club until we're at a level where we don't need to sell. We're getting there from a footballing perspective, but we're not there yet from a business perspective. Until we are there, our youngest stars will be at risk to leave under the right circumstances.

Re: Official: Mehdi Benatia signs for Bayern Munich
Roma President James Pallotta has released a strongly worded statement hitting out at Mehdi Benatia and accusing him of lying.
The defender suggested in an interview with Kicker released today that he had intended to stay with the Giallorossi this summer and that it was the club’s requirement to raise funds that resulted in his eventual sale to Bayern Munich for an initial €26m.
However, the capital club’s President has taken exception to these claims and chosen to react through a statement released via Roma’s official website, to explain his version of why the 27-year-old was moved on.
“Mehdi Benatia has obviously continued with his pattern of outright fabrications over the last couple of months,” Pallotta is quoted by I Lupi.
“We had a verbal agreement on compensation and a raise back in July in Boston. He personally said to me that he was happy after I told him flat out with no exceptions that we wanted him to stay.
“Over the following month he lied about wanting to stay and about the details of his compensation to both Rudi Garcia and his teammates.
“Lying to me was one thing which I can somewhat handle. Lying to Rudi Garcia and his teammates was completely unacceptable to me.
“I told Walter Sabatini he was becoming a poison and I wanted him gone, and Rudi and Walter agreed.
“It wasn’t about the money; it was about having character in our locker room. We are in a very sound financial position.
“As owners of Roma, we make difficult decisions all the time. As a fan of Roma, I am deeply disappointed that one of our players could act this way.”

Re: Official: Mehdi Benatia signs for Bayern Munich
Quite obvious Benatia made an attempt to satiate both public parties in order to preserve his own reputation which was a move unwise considering Roma (a club known not to hold anything) would not tolerate a blatant lie told by him. I was quite expecting Pallotta or Roma in general to swiftly address the sketchy words of Benatia as he's severed all ties of affection held towards him from Romanisti, as of now.
His conduct in leaving Roma (AND Udinese of sorts) was disgraceful and I 100% agree with letting him go considering the timing was perfect along with his presence potentially being a cancer in what is a fantastically united Roma locker room.

Could care less about what Benatia says at this point. Counter-productive to give attention to stuff like that.
Pallotta's a hot head obviously, but what Serie A president isn't?

Re: Official: Mehdi Benatia signs for Bayern Munich
...aaaaaaaand he's off again, to Juve.
Loan with an option to buy, which becomes an obligation after a certain amount of games played.
Fee will be 18m €, I guess all in all would be around 20m, which is a 10m loss after 2 seasons.
Two seasons in which Benatia sadly was injured more than he was fot to play.
Seems apt in hindsight that he was never even included in the official Bayern players thread
Anyway, good for him.
Not sure whether we should have let him go that easily tbh, he's a terrific defender and we'll need another CB backup now.
Hummels is injury prone and Boateng is injured.
For Badstuber, 'injury prone' is far too weak an expression.
However, with the arrival of Hummels it was clear he'd not be a starter with everyone fit, and I guess he wasn't happy with that, neither were we happy with his constant muscle injuries.
Sadly, the guy has rarely ever been fit.
But still, we're a bit too generous with players who want to leave, especially regarding transfer fees.
Wishing him all the best, great addition for Juve; and a great club for him to join since he can't make it at Bayern
