Re: Malazan Book of The Fallen, anyone?
- Spoiler:
- At the end of chapter 16:
Withal kneels down and calls out to the oldest god he knows, Mael
Beginning of chapter 17:
Bugg falls in the river because he thought someone called his name
If this doesn't give it away, i don't know what will

Re: Malazan Book of The Fallen, anyone?
Just finished MT
- Spoiler:
I wasn’t that enticed with the idea of a whole book about Trull, but it kind of grew on me with its details and characters. Yeah, Trull gets a whole lot more interesting and we get Tehol & Bugg and all the others. The implications at the end are unpredictable imo, i don't know which way the story can proceed now lol, the possibilities are endless. Contrast this to say LotR, its a fantastic journey but the end is pretty much pre-determined. What’s the end at this point–could be anything, but you can be sure it will be cool. Udinaas chapters were a torture for me, felt like a chore. He is uninteresting even with Wyval blood, not even Wither can save his chapters. The rest of the POVs were alright. By far the most badass moment was when the Edur stumbled on Serenity (Forkrul Assail), and Serenity said something along the lines of "You are discord, there must be peace" to Rhulad then went final form over them. Also, the Ceda , was about to go ham on all the Edur, "his power was equivalent to a god" according to the book at that time, made Hannan Mosag his bhok'aral lmfao
As for most of the book, i don't want to say it was 'uneventful' (in fact, quite a lot happened) but it drawled on a bit i think. The convergence, as always, was amazing. I struggled a bit with the higher powers going on in the book, but hopefully it'll get answered in future books. Also, I am so, so glad Tehol lives. Sad for Hull and Brys (Brys more so , seeing the Ceda die, his king die, and gets betrayed ) Though he;s not completely out of the picture the 'Seaweed Guardian' (his name was never mentioned) took him to the seabed(?) i'm guessing to serve as the 2nd guardian. The Crimson Guard Iron Bars is a beast, takes on 5 Teblor and buys time until Silchas Ruin arrives and wipes the floor with them. One of my most eagerly anticipated plot threads is Shurq captaining the ship, leading Iron Bars, Corlo, Harlest and Shand and co to do some pirate stuff. Bugg at the end "I've got a god that i need to beat up.."
But yeah, overall its a good book, not the best i've read out of the 5 so far, but amicable. 7/10
Observations
-How did that Jaghut woman end up in Letheras? That was weird af, reading Bugg finding her in the quarry lmao
-Why does Silchas Ruin have white skin if he's Tiste Andii? A bit weird..
-I'm quite confused as to the Houses/Holds, this takes during GoTM if i'm not mistaken, there's a lot of holds/houses missing at the end of the glossary (High House Life? High House Shadow?) since its in another continent does that mean that houses/holds need to be built in those continents to have prevalence? Also why doesnt the Azath Hold exist post GoTM?
-Blue Rose are Tiste Andii, how did they get subjugated by the Letherii? One of the most powerful races..
-Sheltatha Lore is still lurking in the barrows
-Udinaas' seed is still with Menandore
-Ratcatcher's Guild was hilarious
-Osserc was seen in a vision by Udinese, it seems that he aims to help the Andii, given the hostility of the Liosan warriors in HoC against Trull, it seems he has untoward plans for the Edur
-2 Forkrul Assail out on the loose now, R.I.P. Malazans
-Corlo says the Avowed (Iron Bars) objective is to return Prince K'azz to his lands (Kellanved's). I don't get the relation bewteen him and Kellanved, is he the the rightful air to the Malazan Empire or something? If so why did he side with Caladan Brood?
-Jecht are pre-ritual T'lan Imass?!
-Assail is a continent..does it have FA?
My awards
Best Duo
Tehol and Bugg. Was there ever a doubt?
Best Character
Bugg. Mael in disguise, carried Errant on his back, has a Jaghut's favor, saved Tehol and restored him.
Unsung Hero
Ceda Kuru Qan. Took down Mosag's demon, locked him in his place, was seconds away from destroying the whole Edur people.Best New CharacterSaddest Character Since, all the characters are new i had to make a new category.
Brys. For reasons i mentioned above.
Funniest Character
I want to say Tehol/Bugg, but they are racking up too many points imo. I'd say Shurq Elalle. The whole scene where she broke into the Toll's Repository with the spirits was 10/10, would laugh again.
Worst Character
Garen Eberict. He's like Bidithal, only somehow more unlikeable
Best Quote
Seran Pedac: "Destiny is a lie. Destiny is justification for atrocity. It is the means by which murderers armour themselves against reprimand. It is a word intended to stand in place of ethics, denying all moral context."
Funniest Quote
That’s better,’ Shand said in a more mellow tone. She leaned forward. ‘Tehol Beddict.
We know all about you.’
‘Oh?’
‘We even know why what happened happened.’
‘You do?’
‘And you shall do it again.’
‘I shall?’
‘Yes. Only this time, you will have the courage to go through with it. All the way.’
‘I will?’
‘Because we - myself, Hejun and Rissarh - we’re going to be your courage. This time.
Now, let’s get out of here, before that server comes back. We’ve purchased a building.
We can talk there. It doesn’t smell.’
‘Now that’s a relief,’ Tehol said.

Pretty sure there are more characters in Malazan than there are members in GL. Imo the footballers are Ascendants and GL members are their priests.

Re: Malazan Book of The Fallen, anyone?
I'm in chapter II and struggling a bit, the hell this is a tough read which needs 100% attention at every bit of dialogue atleast in the beginning I hope.
I think I understood everything I had to understand in 1st chapter/Prologue but in the 2nd one in the dialogue between Tattersail the sorceress and the Bridgburner I feel like that guy who arrives late at a discussion and doesn't understand what the hell they're talking about I'm hoping this is normal and I haven't missed much. I'm trying to take notice in every litle detail, but I still feel like I'm missing something.
Maybe should just get some sleep for now.

Re: Malazan Book of The Fallen, anyone?
The Siege of Pale was amazing. Floating fortress, demons unleashed, "wings of ice", soulshifting, warrens. 9000 men and woman dead. Only the first battle aswell,
Again so many questions, what is an archmage, what's up with the Deck of Dragons and the "coin spinning", Sorry's importance, how did the Emperess become Emperess so quick, what really happened at Seven Cities - the old emperor and his First Sword etc... I think I'm not supposed to know most of these things yet.
Calot you absolute hero, I hope Tattersail gets to avenge him.
Loved this chapter despite the struggle in the beggining.

Re: Malazan Book of The Fallen, anyone?
After 6 books in, i can say that Malazan is simply too big for any live action interpretation, but i feel it would do really well in a mature anime type format. Even though GoT has more main characters than is normal for a TV series, its got nothing on Malazan

Re: Malazan Book of The Fallen, anyone?
Steven Erikson last year said on a reddit AMA that the only way he sees a visual interpretation of the series are movies...with each book having 3 movies (: Sure thing m8 studios are salivating to release 30 movies of a book series with a cult following.

Re: Malazan Book of The Fallen, anyone?
That'd be impossible, can you imagine the budge they have to blow to generate CGI for Tlan Imass? Jaghut? What about Warrens and battles ffs
Brandon Sanderson (Mistborn, Stormlight, last 3 WoT books) said in an AMA that he'd consider giving a chance to animation with his series. Though his books (Bar WoT) aren't that big compared to Malazan and GoT.
I just think there's a general stigma in writers using others means of visual representation when its not a show/movie. Can you imagine if say Malazan was a video game? Before you shoot this down, just think of the Fire Emblem. Granted it'd be tough to execute but, holy cow imagine you controlling different squads each chapter, switching between Genabackis, Seven Cities, Lether, etc. This is just mindless presumption but it would be amazing if pulled off right.

Re: Malazan Book of The Fallen, anyone?
Lmao you have the same thoughts I did after finishing the books. Yeah video game and anime is what I immediately thought. I never played Fire Emblem but a Malazan RPG would be so great, using Warrens to fast travel And anime is the most realistic tbh if the series is to be adapted faithfully, live action would require a ridiculous budget.

IMO after TBH is when the series starts to decline a little, still a great read, but everything leading up to that was GOAT in my eyes.
