Last 16: Netherlands (1B) vs Mexico (2A) 29.06.14 18:00

Interesting matchup awaiting us on Sunday. Netherlands are favourites, but Mexico can pull of an upset.

Kick-off time: 29th June 2014 at 18:00 CET
Stadium: Estádio Castelão, Fortaleza

I'm thinking probably a 2 or 3 - 0 similar to the Chile game for the Netherlands. Mexico was my favoured realistic opponent from Group A.

Netherlands bascially have a free pass to the semis. Got insanely lucky with how the draw came out. They've successfully dodged Germany, France, Colombia and Brazil only to play against teams like Costa Rica, Mexico and Ivory Coast.

No such thing as a free pass.

Likely their side of the bracket will go through Mexico, Ivory Coast and then one of Argentina/Belgium.

Say they were on the other side it would probably be Brazil, Colombia then France/Germany.

Definitely the other side is a tougher route, but it won't be easy either way and any team in the knockouts can win. I am definitely happier with this draw though.

That said the other bracket will have some awesome matches, Brazil v Chile, Colombia v Italy/Uruguay, France v Germany.

I don't think Argentina will beat both Switzerland and Belgium, but I also think Chile will beat Brazil. That said both of those teams could start stepping up their game and prove me wrong, but they have not shown much IMO thus far and the other teams have looked better or are better on paper (especially Belgium, they are primed for a breakout performance).

The only reason Belgium/Argentina don't look amazing is that teams have just been putting everybody behind the ball against them, making it much harder to play. Like it or not they are still winning and against more expansive sides they will be able to play a more expansive game and come into their own.

Iran had more scoring chances than Argentina did, and really should have had a penalty that wasn't called. I don't care what formation Iran is playing with who Argentina have that never should have happened. Either they were dogging it or they are in serious trouble once they face some good teams. They got probably the easiest group in the tournament and have had trouble against both Bosnia and Iran.

Holland looked really average against Australia so who knows. Mexico could pull the upset imo.

Group stage performances mean absolutely nothing lol.

Argentina should dispatch their 2nd round and Quarter with ease.

As for Holland, the game against Mexico won't be easy but if they get through it they should make the Semi-finals.

Will Mexico be tougher than Spain or Chile? I think not. Both of those teams I think are at least better if not much better than Mexico.

As for Argentina dispatching their Ro16 and Quarter with ease I would be careful. Even though the Swiss got pumped against France they are better than that, and Belgium has one of the best teams in the tournament on paper. If they start clicking they could even make the final IMO.

Also Chile meant absolutely nothing as both teams hardly tried for 80 mins.

As for Spain, yes Mexico will be tougher than them... Spain are just a name they have been utter turd this tournament and unlike Spain. Mexico can actually defend.

México have become way overrated. They are a good team, certainly better than anyone expected considering their struggle to qualify, but they have no chance against the Dutch. 3-0.

No they haven't.... Like the USA they have great chemistry, toughness and ability to play as a team and people overrate talent.

We will make it tough for the dutch I have no doubt about that. We are defending as well if not better than anyone in the tournament. My concerns are our offense and Gallo being out. We struggle to create chances when not on the counter, and then we don't finish the actual chances we get. As for Gallo he has been performing great as the lone dm, but now that he is suspended there is no one on the squad to replace him adequately. I hope we play Gullit there he has been underwhelming in friendlies, but he's still a great player. Not the defesinve workhorse Gallo is, but he does offer alot more in attack. Just hpe we don't play guardado there ffs
