Who will advance to the quarter-finals?
Re: Last 16: Netherlands (1B) vs Mexico (2A) 29.06.14 18:00
What's with this 'cooling break'??? Didn't see this in any previous matches.

day light robbery.
first the two goals away from Cameroon, then the penalties against Croatia, now this... disgusting.
fortune favors the brave.
Maybe, if your coach wasn't so negative, today's match might have ended differently. Playing as he had something to lose lol
what are you even on about? we have more shots on goal the entire first half, did you even watch the match lmao
Holland was only ever a threat on corners, unless you consider robben shooting from the far right end of the box a threat which 9/10 keepers would stop blindly.
Oh wait.. Hollan must be so brave they shined brighter then Xavi at sideways passing to nothing? xD

What happened to Mexico as soon as they scored? They went turtle mode.
Good riddance. Hate teams like that.

There was nothing brave about Holland's performance lol
They deserved to win overall but it almost felt like circumstance considering how they won the game. They scored from a loose ball off a corner kick and a late penalty.
However in tournament football a win like this is always more than enough and a great momentum builder so credit to Holland for digging deep.

How did Netherlands got all those corner kicks? It was because they were attacking.
Fortune usually favor teams who attack.

For me "fortune favors the brave" is used to describe those who take the initiative from the start. That's not what Holland did though because the choice to attack was made for them when Mexico retreated.
Before going 1-0 down Holland did not attack bravely, no chit they attack after they are losing lol.
If you want to have a go at Mexico for letting the game slip by letting Holland have the ball way too much than be my guest because I would agree with that.

We played with balls every single game to the last whistle. Not sure what your on about. Robben cranked it up after we scored and it was hard for us to do anything but absorb; more so than us just deciding to fall back. It's hard to try to protect a lead and attack the same time when the entire other team is pushing down on you.
Proud of how we played this World Cup, proud for Ochoa, and proud we got out the groups.
My feels though; we were so damn close :'(

Decisive yes but his performance as a whole was rather poor IMO.
More clutch than an actual good performance, but at the end of the day he got the job done.
I agree, infact he is a Ā player definitely in decline.
but anyway even in this situation he showed to be a difference maker for Netherlands.

Rationalize it which ever way you want, but the truth of the matter is that you played like a typical Mourinho team. Shut down shop after taking a one point lead.
Only problem is that Mexico are not exactly a defensive powerhouse. Why did you take out your one and only offensive threat with 30 mins to go? Did you really think you could keep Netherlands out for that long? Such naivety and ignorance from your coach.
At the end of the day Mexico only got themselves to blame. Had they kept on pressing that shambolic Dutch defense, they would have won the match.

Just watching the game on replay and who is seriously arguing that that isn't a penalty? Marquez steps on his foot after he plays the ball inside past him. Clearly there is contact and it impedes his movement.

You need to get your eyes checked. Marquez planted his foot a few millimeters in front of Robben's foot. Robben took that as an initiative to dive.

Clearly, CLEARLY, on top of Robben's toes there.
Did Robben make a meal of it? Absolutely.
Was it a foul? Clearly.
And a foul in the box = a penalty. No dive, just exaggeration. Clear foul, clear penalty.

Your gif shows exactly the same thing. Thank you for proving my point.
Rafa Marquez steps on Robben's boot and fouls Robben. Robben exaggerated the fall but it was clearly a foul and therefore a penalty.

No he didn't. Marquez foot is clearly just in front of Robben's. Never a penalty.
This is everything wrong with football btw. Any contact in the box is now seen as a penalty, no matter how much contact there was. Fifa has to do something about all this flopping. Can't have teams flopping all the way to the finals ffs.

So first you say that Marquez plants in front of Robben and that therefore there isn't any contact. Then in the exact same post you admit there's contact but attempt to suggest that it's not impede Robben's movement, as though somehow stepping on another person's foot (while they're in full flight) can somehow NOT do so.
Might want to get your story straight before trying to argue against clear visual evidence. Though either way it's a losing proposition.

A) This is the ONLY match we did the shut down after the lead type of tactic. So you saying your glad we are out because we are a defensive type of team is just nonsense. The entire first half was all us taking shots, not the dutch. Hell, we played better against them than chile up until after the goal. That said, I agree we shut down and tried to ride out the storm for a win after the goal. I don't agree with it and honestly have no clue why we went that route. But to say we are some Mourinho style team is nonsense. 4 games with one half out of those 4 in defensive mode does not make us some beta Chelsea. Chelsea just start in the bus and stay put for the 90 and look for counters. thats not what Mexico does. We like to run and cause havoc and try to press forward franticly lol
B) We played with nuts. You make it seem like we are some super boring team like Greece (sorry greece fans). Those final 20 mins vs Croatia and not allowing Brazil to score was a big deal...especially considering how we BARELY even got to the World Cup. It's a step up for us
C) I am not blaming anybody for our loss. I am not an idiot, I know it was our own doing. And for the record, I think the foul at the end of the game was a clear cut penalty. Did Robben flail his arms like he got shot with a canon? yes he did. Does that mean it wasn't a pk? It was....he was clear fouled and he just over exaggerated. Doesn't mean it wasnt a pk. We deserved to lose this one. It just hurts we were so damn close to advancing (5 mins away from glory...)

also Giovanni dos Santos rarely plays full matches especially for a Mexico, we took him out because he was dead tired and barely moving not because we just wanted to defend..

Re: Last 16: Netherlands (1B) vs Mexico (2A) 29.06.14 18:00
another dramatic game....thought Mexico deserved better, specially the way they played in first half. could not beleive everything would be lost in a matter of 5 mins. but thats the way it is . football is played in 90 mins and Mexico lost momentum both offensively and defensively in last 15 mins or so. Netherland utilized it. otherwise i would say as a neutral, Mexico with far inferior squad played better than Netherland. ....
And Ochoa is really a superb keeper....fantastic reflex....at first i thought it just hype but the guy really got it. its a joy to watch him....hope he moves to some good club..

Pretty blatant penalty. Don't really care if you think Robben is a diver (he is, a well known one at that). He was also denied a very blatant penalty in the first half for a double fouling in the box where neither Mexico player touched the ball -- probably because of his reputation.
Netherlands need to get their shit together though and stop screwing around in the first half of games. They've done it every game this tournament. Maybe it's smart to conserve energy and let the opponent tire out, but it sure could bite them in the ass against better teams.

3 Clear PK's should have been there. The brutal double challenge, the leg-sweep in the 2nd half and Marquez tripping.
Does not matter if Robben danced, sang, fell, dived, jumped or cried after the tackle. He tripped and part stamped his boot. Whether Robben made more out of it is a different question to the legitimacy of the PK.
Happy with how Robben played. Great game. De Jong is out of the tournament. Fer has injury and De Guzman has been poor. Blind played @ DM and was also poor IMO.
Clasie needs to start IMO and Hunter needs to play regularly, as a starter or sub.
We need to go for a 4-3-3 against Costa Rica with Robben, RVP or Hunter and Depay .

Robben is a great talent, but he is an impostor of a sportsman.
He cuts into the box at pace, waits for the defender to put the tackle in, gets slight contact, Robben's legs go up in the air, the back arches, he looks a mile ahead and lines up his hands in front of his eyes and executes a perfect forward 1 1/2 somersault pike dive. Splash! Straight into the swimming pool. Judges scores: 10, 10, and 10! Robben wins the mens diving Olympic Gold medal in Brazil two years early!
