Both teams got no defense and midfield.
It may be a very exciting game for the neutral and the casual fan. End to end stuff with both sides doing nothing other than running towards each other with pace. At such times with all else balanced the extra genius of Messi should work in Argentina's favour. On the other hand as mole said it could be a very dull game with both sides basically camped in their own halves. However it's all hypothetical right now. The way this world cup is going who knows who will knock whom out.

Disappointing from the Dutch until they went behind, likely due to De Jong's absence and the heat. Their response to the goal was fantastic however and I think they deservedly went through, though they owe a huge debt of thanks to Herrera for inexplicably sitting back when his team was on top.

Argentina are playing too poorly right now. So it's too early to say that. First let us come up with better performances and then just maybe we can start hoping. Actually after Brazil last night and Netherlands today who knows if all the big teams will compete with each other to perform even more poorly. This world cup is so strange.

Did you watch the first 70 mins of this game? Dutch basically sat back and denied space.
Same would happen against Argentina, the game would be 2-1 either way max, Van Gaal won't allow Argentina to attack like that to be able to score that amount.
Dunno who was was playing right back for the Dutch, but he's pretty bad. If only Mexico had a better final ball, this game would have been dead and buried before the 70th minute.

Perhaps but the gameplan is clear and should they both reach the semis i don't think the game will be that open personally.

I just saw some of the Dutch players in interviews. They looked as if they had spent too long in a steam sauna; Arjen Robben even wore a cooling vest, so I guess the heat really took its toll on the Dutch and they desperately needed to conserve energy and only put up the intensity when they went down a goal.

Actually, thinking about it more, the heat during the match was crazy.

It was an obvious dive but I wouldn't call it a robbery. Marquez was playing with fire by going in like that and it could just as easily have been a penalty anyway.
Robben is an expert when it comes to the "starfish special" in the box, no one can deny this.
I feel for Mexico because I felt they would have deserved to win the match overall had they held on to the ball a bit better in the last 15 minutes. I think it was a big mistake to let Holland back into the game like that.
As for Holland, I think they will reach the final at this point. Momentum is a hell of a drug and you can tell by now that they can grind out a result if they need to. This coupled with the fact that they do actually have some quality players makes them very dangerous.

In Qatar, humidity isn't a problem. They just need to play closer to dawn.

Wesley Sneijder
He has always a great performance with his National Team , even not in his best year.
Goal incredibly decisive

It hurts me any time a team does that. Atletico did just the same thing against Madrid in the UCL final. Do teams really believe they can hold on to one goal leads by sitting back and inviting continuous pressure? Anyway modern day defensive standards are lower. Even parking the bus has it's flaws and is often dependent on luck. It's important to at least go for some counter attacks and keep the pressure on the other side. Also what happened to the old world tactic of holding on to the ball so that the opponent gets frustrated and does not get many chances with it? That technique is so absent at this world cup.
Well if Costa Rica gets past the Greeks, I would bet my money on them to beat the Netherlands. As for Argentina, don't really fancy them in this tournament tbh. Argentina remains a mystery to me. With all the abundant talent at their disposal, why do they always pick garbage players for the world cups? Such a shame really..

Re: Last 16: Netherlands (1B) vs Mexico (2A) 29.06.14 18:00
once again van gaal went with a 5-3-2 defensive approach when its proved that this team is good only when attacking and win games based on that more.
the reason we did well decently so far with that shite defense has a lot to do with the presence of de jong and when he got subbed off at 10 mins and then when I saw still not reverting from 5-3-2 i wasnt exactly surprised by the manner in which we performed in defense.
it was so clumsy and shoddy. and cilessen. why he is preferred constantly I cant understand when we have a much more experienced keeper on the bench in Krul or may be Vorm. Cilessen was too low on confidence. and on any other day he could have conceded 2-3 in that first half.
Taking no credit whatsover from mex I still feel the fact behind they looking that impressive has a lot to do with we playing so so poorly and some ordinary tactics. Sneijder in that first half constantly lost possession in the middle.
It was as if we were waiting for a goal to be scored against to start playing our game, even though it took that bluff from their coach of subbing Dos Santos off to fully execute it.
Clearly an escape this one even though we kinda dominated the match for the last half an hour or so thanks to them reverting to defensive approach.
Hope Van Gaal will be more positive from the next match onwards.
And btw that Robben penalty decision was correct. He is known to reverting to such theatrics upon slightest of contacts. but here there was some contact. a half stamp or something. And ref mightnt have given this if the earlier one was given. So it was bound to be a pointing to the spot by the ref.
Commiserations to Mex supporting buddies. it must be a hard pill to swallow. but yea thats the way it is I guess sometimes.

Decisive yes but his performance as a whole was rather poor IMO.
More clutch than an actual good performance, but at the end of the day he got the job done.

lol, chill u underdog lovers, that was a clear penalty on robben. whether he makes the most of it irrespective.
Told you guys that form means nothing in a world cup. BTW, subbing of JDS was a bad idea, even if he wanted to play defense he woulda subbed out some other player as well, IMO. anyway congrats to the dutch and hats off to the mexicans. BTW nerves couldn't allow robben take the pen *faceP*
Ochoa though!

Well that's a bold declaration. If Costa Rica get that far first of all I'll expect them to suffer from stage fright.
Argentina are not playing well and it's worth wondering what could have happened to us if we had a tougher draw but in the present circumstances anything is possible. We need to up our game soon which we should do. As for the abundance of talent, do we have any world class midfielders to pick?
Re: Last 16: Netherlands (1B) vs Mexico (2A) 29.06.14 18:00
Agree with Mole, Sneijder wasn't really involved that much in terms of overall play. However being decisive is way way way more important in the end.

Absolutely. Salcido dominated Sneijder but what matters much more in the end is that he got the game changing goal.

I aint even shocked, FIFA has been robbing us since game 1, Herrera was kicked in the back of the head in the first half.. no penalty and then he gives it to the biggest diver in the game? yeah right
day light robbery.
first the two goals away from Cameroon, then the penalties against Croatia, now this... disgusting.

Maybe, if your coach wasn't so negative, today's match might have ended differently. Playing as he had something to lose lol

Yes that's the other way of looking at it. This makes me worry about Switzerland because they really have nothing to lose against us.
As far I can think right now the only central midfielder we could have brought who may have been better than Gago is Ever Banega but it seems there are both consistency and attitude problems with him.
