Re: The World Cup of injured stars
Loool this is getting ridiculous, the amount of stars and top players for various reasons we wont get to see, such a shame Ibra, Alaba etc. I wish they were in bigger nations so that w can always see them in the big tournaments!
Reus is a huge miss

Re: The World Cup of injured stars
I believe this is the most recent list of players confirmed OUT of the WC due to injury:
Reus
Ribery
Falcao
Thiago
Valdes
Walcott
Gundogan
V.D Vaart
El Shaarawy
Benteke
Rossi
Montolivo
Strootman
That's not even including the "doubts" around players like Suarez, Ronaldo, Aguero, etc.
All joking aside, this may well be remembered as the World Cup of injured stars, but I'm not convinced it's a negative for the tournament. When you remove some of the super-stars from the competition, it could create more parity and yield a far more open - and therefore, entertaining - tournament. As terrance511 said, this is an opportunity for new stars to step up. That has the potential to be far more exciting than the same old big star versus big star or traditional power versus traditional power match-up.

Don't forget Holger Badstuber. Before his injury, he was a starter for Germany.donttreadonred wrote:I believe this is the most recent list of players confirmed OUT of the WC due to injury:

Re: The World Cup of injured stars
eh the world cup is the sports most prestigious title and comes once every 4 years, I'm sure many players will want to play even if they're job completely fit. In any case a player could be in the squad because they expect him to recover later.dostoevsky wrote:If they quite literally miss the World Cup I'm more than happy to include them in the injured list. Unless Ronaldo is facing amputation though he's not missing the World Cup.

Well, let's say then "players who would have made an impact in their NTs and would have made the line-ups better and thus certainly are missed."BarrileteCosmico wrote: I think you are stretching the meaning of stars in some of those but good list

Re: The World Cup of injured stars
As already said, just too many games played for these guys and too much fatigue accumulation leading to body parts wearing down which leads to overcompensating in other body parts and anywhere along this line, it leads to injury.
Noone gives a crap obvious, money is only thing that matters and running the players into the ground for the sake of it is just fine.
I read today, Neymar has already played almost 50 games for his NT. He turned 22 in Feb.
Pele played 92 games, total. 14 year NT career.

Portugal have declared Ronaldo fit and he is now back in normal training.
Pepe is still recovering though.

Re: The World Cup of injured stars
38 of the 47 appearances for Neymar were friendlies though... really meaningless. He's only played 8 official games for Brazil NT. 42 out of the 92 games for Pele were competition games; 50 of them were friendlies.
So you're truly comparing 42 to 9 at this point. In the 42 games, Pele scored 43 goals. Neymar has scored 6 in his 9 games.

Re: The World Cup of injured stars
Thats because Brazil have not had to qualify for this WC because they are hosts so in every FIFA date they just played friendlies.

Re: The World Cup of injured stars
Whatever the case, you can't compare friendlies to official comps... It's night and day. You can compare stats friendlies v friendlies if you want since those totals are pretty close now lol.
Edit: The WC winners got an auto-bid for the next one until 2014. This is the first time that a WC champ had to go through qualis. Pele won 3 WCs and Brazil didn't have WCQs for the 3 following WCs. They just didn't play that many games in a year back in those days as a result. It was usually 4-5 games total per calendar year and 8-10 during WC years or something like that. Also, WCs involved far less teams = less games. Just a different era.

I am comparing games played, the players run in them, the plays try in them, the players accumulate fatigue in them.
Thats the long and short of it.

Yes dani. It's just so bad and sad.
Is this the world cup that's going to miss greater number of top players through injury than any other world cup in recent memory?
Re: The World Cup of injured stars
I really cant remember, 4 years ago seems like yesterday and a lifetime ago all at once
Cant remember absentees from other WC's.

Re: The World Cup of injured stars
No World Cup in my memory had so many injuries, From 2010 I remember
Ballack
Westerman (sub)
Adler
Nani
Rooney (not 100 %)
Miccoli (was snubbed by Lippi any way)
2010 had more controversial snubs. Benzema, Ronaldinho, Pato, Marcelo, Nasri, Cassano, Rossi, Balotelli, Zanneti, Cambiasso etc.

Re: The World Cup of injured stars
On the other hand, players get annoyed when they are not playing every game, so maybe there needs to be some re-thinking with the players themselves.
