The World Cup of injured stars
Ronaldo - might not make the first match/matches
Ribery - out
Messi - got injured 4 times this season
Aguero - still carrying injury, doubtful for the first match
Falcao - out
Suarez - might not make the first couple of matches
Diego Costa - might not make the first couple of matches
Gomez - out
Rossi - deemed too unfit
I'm sure I'm missing many others. The amount of matches modern players play is ridiculous - before bossing 2002 Fatty Ronaldo played only 24 matches in 3 years. He was thus very rested for the WC and excelled at it. No star is arriving to the WC in similarly rested state.

There really needs to be a bigger break after the season ends imo.

Re: The World Cup of injured stars
Firstly in general the number of matches being played each season need to be decreased but no one seems to be bothered to do anything about it.
Secondly for world cup years there should be even more provisions for resting but nowadays players are barely getting a week between season end and joining the national team.
No matter that they are superstars and earn a lot, they are still human beings. Some in charge of things seem to have forgotten this last bit.

Sprained ankles are the worst. Lost too many good player through them.
Ronaldo, Van Basten, Pele, Banks and Zidane all were forced to retire due to them.
I feel sorry for you. I can't imagine the pain you go through everyday.

Re: The World Cup of injured stars
no BC you can't define Ronaldo rested and excelled for it
those injured were really awful , and also close. (factor who worsens much the situation)
90% of times it is even difficult to imagine a return in pitch , let alone to high levels.
It was a miracle, only an unreal player as Ronaldo could do it, because Ronaldo to 50% is always a difference maker. Few could think a similar scenario after his injury in Lazio-Inter 2000 in Coppa Italia. But he wasn't a normal man.

Re: The World Cup of injured stars
Ideally there would be a longer off-season from club football, but we know it's not going to happen. Not all of those who are out are out due to fatigue-related injuries, though.
Fixed.

Re: The World Cup of injured stars
Germany have announced that Marco Reus will not recover from an ankle injury in time to play in the World Cup.
The Borussia Dortmund player suffered a partial ligament tear in Friday's 6-1 friendly defeat of Armenia and has been replaced by centre-back Shkodan Mustafi in Joachim Low's 23-man squad.
Reus was left in agony following a heavy challenge from Armenia midfielder Artur Yedigaryan one minute before the end of the first half and was subsequently replaced by Lukas Podolski.
The 25-year-old was immediately taken to hospital to undergo an MRI scan, which confirmed the ligament damage.
After initial optimism over his chances of playing in Brazil, Germany confirmed his absence from the competition on Saturday morning.
"It is extremely regrettable for him and for us," Low told the media. "Marco was in excellent shape. He was superb in our training camp and during our friendlies against Cameroon and Armenia. He showed a real joy for playing. We all expected him to play a major role in this competition."
Speaking about Reus' replacement, the coach explained why he picked the once-capped Sampdoria defender: "It was not about replacing Marco Reus one-on-one. We have great quality behind the forward already with Lukas Podolski, Andre Schurrle, Mario Gotze, Thomas Muller, Mesut Ozil, Julian Draxler and Toni Kroos. We have many alternatives. That is why we decided to go with another option for our defence.
"Shkodan convinced us during the training camp. He is fit and we trust him. We know we can rely on him 100 per cent."
No Reus

2002 was very similar too... whoever wasn't injured was killed off during the tournament by the heat & humidity

Re: The World Cup of injured stars
If they're still part of the squad then they shouldn't be classified as injured in my view.
M99's list seems pretty comprehensive, though Thiago Alcantara has been overlooked.

Well, the definite list can only be made 24 hours before the first match as that's the final deadline to replace injured players.dostoevsky wrote:If they're still part of the squad then they shouldn't be classified as injured in my view.

Re: The World Cup of injured stars
If they quite literally miss the World Cup I'm more than happy to include them in the injured list. Unless Ronaldo is facing amputation though he's not missing the World Cup.

Yeah. Hm... Maybe the list should be sorted by country, I think that would be interesting, too.
