It's NZ, everyone knows someone in LOTR.
The guy that plays Nori, Jed, also played a few orc's in LOTR:

My list of Demands:
1. Demand a pic of the guy normally next to his orc pic.
2. Pic of Gandalf's horse in real life or it didnt happen.

Agreed
Re: The Official Talk About Whatever Thread
I personally thought it goes like this:
1: return of the king (best)
2: Fellowship
3: two towers (worst, but not by much.)
If I was to rank the two hobbit movies in with them:
1: return of the king (best)
2: Unexpected Journey
3: Fellowship
4: two towers
5: Desolation of Smaug

Desolation of Smaug beat Unexpected Journey handily for me. Unexpected Journey is by far the weakest LotR movie yet imo. I would go with
1. Return of the King
2. The Two Towers
3. Fellowship
4. Desolation of Smaug
5. Unexpected Journey
Desolation and Fellowship are pretty close for me, but I'd have to watch Fellowship again. I think I would still end up going in that order.

Re: The Official Talk About Whatever Thread
I think it's a bit different for me and here is why:
watching LOTR is like a cross country adventure with many far scenes of my beautiful homeland laced with fantastic animations but what makes it fantastic is the countryside.
Unexpected Journey had that to an extent but also had a decent length to the movie, it gave me hope for the squels and the characters.
Desolation was overdone with animations (So much animation, so little countryside!) I can understand that as places like the lakeside and Elf kingdoms/Enchanted forests/caves/dwarf kingdoms are not present as much in New Zealand but I still felt they were given a giant amount of money for the film (which they were) and decided to overload on animation and drag the movie on forever! Return of the king got a tad tedious towards the end but Desolation kept going when it really could have stopped, it's only the second film, save something for the third!
So the main reasons I don't like it is because it dragged on and with the animation overloading, I didn't get the nostalgic feel I got with the rest as I didn't get to see enough of the New Zealand countryside. I watch the LOTR movies and think of the times I went camping near where they shot a scene or how I lived near a scene or this or that but Desolation had none of that, I felt disjointed from a series which I had previously felt a part of.
It was a tad disappointing.
That being said, it's still a quality movie.

Re: The Official Talk About Whatever Thread
Fair points, with some personal bias of course (not that that detracts from your point at all but having lived in NZ I understand). While I partially get your point about Desolation going on when it could have stopped, I personally feel that there were many many scene in Unexpected Journey that took unnecessarily long and the movie dragged out considerably at points. I didn't get that feel with Desolation, which had much more classic LotR action and suspense. I didn't feel the movie drag on at all, and was disappointed even at the end of the movie that it had to end!
Despite the heavier touch on action and suspense, I don't feel the movie was too far behind on the emotional side, either. Unexpected Journey set up Desolation well and had a lot of introducing the characters (as you might expect), but I feel some of the emotion in the movie was kind of cliche and almost "cheesy". Desolation had less emotional moments, but was a bit more realistic when it came by. Perhaps this is because we have gotten to know the characters a lot better.
I agree on the animation overload though. I also agree that visually I think Unexpected Journey was superior. I've watched both movies recently, too, since I watched Unexpected Journey to get up the hype for Desolation.
Damn... I want to go to New Zealand.

Rivendell was filmed in my hometown (Wellington) well, just outside it.

I will reply to CB tomorrow, for now, off to bed.
EDIT: I've camped in that regional park too, it's beautiful.

Re: The Official Talk About Whatever Thread
Nobody considers the Fellowship the best film? I strongly disagree. It's my favourite movie of all time. Much more character-driven and realistic in its violence than any of the other LotR films.
As the films have gone by, it seems like they have become more and more about ridiculously epic action scenes, which is fun and all, but the Fellowship had less of that and more just pure quality story-telling. It captured my imagination the most.
My order:
1. The Fellowship of the Ring
2. The Return of the King
3. The Two Towers
4. The Desolation of Smaug
5. An Unexpected Journey
Interestingly enough, Rotten Tomatoes ranks the Two Towers as the best one of all

Re: The Official Talk About Whatever Thread
Upon reflection, I do think I may be underrating Fellowship a bit. I think I might put it above Two Towers. I'd really have to watch them again to be sure, since it's been a while since I've watched them. Still think prefer Return of the King though.

I didn't get the same feel in Unexpected, I felt almost all the scenes were good length with very few dragging on. When I left the movie theater I was sad because I didn't want it to end. I didn't get that same feeling with desolation.
I did the same, and because both my girlfriend and myself love the hobbit/LOTR series.
I am going back next month, I get to climb Mt doom ffs
@Eman, I agree with you to an extent, Return of the king only narrowly beats Fellowship for me. I like it much better than two towers.

Re: The Official Talk About Whatever Thread
Check this movie out if you like LOTR. Gonna watch it soon myself
Description:
This 70 minute original drama is set in the time before the War of the Ring and tells the story of the Dúnedain, the Rangers of the North, before the return of the King. Inspired by only a couple of paragraphs written by Tolkien in the appendices of the Lord of the Rings we follow Arathorn and Gilraen, the parents of Aragorn, from their first meeting through a turbulent time in their people's history.
Re: The Official Talk About Whatever Thread
Do you guys think I should read or watch LotR first .
