He plays so often for a 21 year old, not just this season already, I mean his career so far he has played a shocking amount of football for Santos and Brazil.

yeah, back when he was at santos, he used to play 2 games in 48 hours sometimes (because of the NT)

Messi has been injured, what does he need rest for?

Well, sometimes after injury or rest you need to start slowly. He is clearly not fit.

If your Puyol and was out a number of months, I would get it, he doesnt have the base fitness level to play twice in 4-5 days.

I would imagine Messi has the base fitness level, he just has been stop-start because of multi-injuries and what he actually needs is consistency of workload. Sort of like Dani Alves last year when everyone was criticising him, but actually all he required was consistent playing time to get his sharpness back and once he got that he was back to normal.

It depends on his injury I guess. If there is a risk of reinjury, obviously there is no point playing him at all.
