Re: Return of the Top Defenses of the Top 5 Leagues 2013-2014 (stats)
So by the "major" leagues, the top 20 are composed of:
1. 6 - English Premier League teams
2. 5 - Ligue 1 teams
3. 3 - La Liga and Serie A teams
4. 2 - Bundesliga teams
I expected the the French league to be up there as always, but I didn't expect to find 6 EPL teams in the top 20.

Despite our complaints we.actually don't concede a lot, though reading people's reactions you would think we let in 973733728282 goals a game.

We get lucky 95% of the time when our backline screws up, plus Valdes really save us soooo much

Reminds me of Bayern. For some reason people always assume they have a very leaky defense.Jonathan28 wrote:Despite our complaints we.actually don't concede a lot, though reading people's reactions you would think we let in 973733728282 goals a game.

Re: Return of the Top Defenses of the Top 5 Leagues 2013-2014 (stats)
I miss Bayern's almost impenetrable 12/13 defense. The low goals conceded stat this season is very misleading. The defense isn't nearly as good as last season.

But Manuel Neuer fortunately is. From what I remember he has the highest percentage of successful saves in the Bundesliga (interestingly followed by Ralf Fährmann).

Yes, Manuel Neuer has raised his game to another level this season. The only error I remember, which then also lead to a goal, was against Hoffenheim when he messed up at a corner. Other than that, nearly flawless.

Mainly average performances in unimportant but visible fixtures. The Supercup against Chelsea and the home fixture against City. Neither of which we were bad in, but both consisted of large periods where we were well below our expected level.
Our greatest weakness will always be our willingness to look past our opponent. Last year against Arsenal we weren't worried about them and this year after demolishing City away and at home in the first half we checked out and almost gave up the top position.

Re: Return of the Top Defenses of the Top 5 Leagues 2013-2014 (stats)
Speaking of Manuel Neuer, given his last 2 years, how is he not up for the Ballon d'or? Seriously when is a keeper going to get some respect. Think of all the major European victories the past few years they all came down to superior performances by keepers:
1. Chelsea upsetting Bayern in the CL Final - Cech was immense
2. Casillas carrying Spain in the Euro's, probably the best display of goal keeping I have ever seen.
3. Neuer for the last 2 years has been the best goal keeper in the world and is always up for the big moments.

Well, as you know I will not contradict you there XD
Unfortunately the Ballon d'Or voters only look for goals scored, not for goals saved to make their verdict...
