Return of the Top Defenses of the Top 5 Leagues 2016-2017 (stats)
Stats up to 28 November 2016, 23:59 GMT+1:
red - League champion
black - club plays CL*
blue - club plays EL*
green - no participation in EL/CL
*) that is, club qualified for the CL/EL spots, but might not actually go through the qualification/play-offs
The FIFA Club World Cup matches of Real Madrid will be listed in the League Cup column as Spain does not have a League cup and I don't want to add some extra columns only for the CWC and Real Madrid. The Italian Supercup is missing atm as they will play it somewhere around XMas.

Re: Return of the Top Defenses of the Top 5 Leagues 2016-2017 (stats)
So. This is the first table for the 2016/17 season as finally I got rid of the Div/0 errors now that all CL/EL matches of the first round were played. ^^
Stats up to 15 September 2016, 23:59 GMT+2:
I'm posting this again here as the first post will always be updated with the newest table, so the first table would get lost if I don't repeat it here.
Have fun with the numbers! If you find any mistakes, please don't hesitate to point them out so that I can fix them.

Kudos for putting in such an effort. You may simplify the table (a bit) if you bunch all domestic cups and European games in a single column respectively.

Re: Return of the Top Defenses of the Top 5 Leagues 2016-2017 (stats)
Actually that wouldn't be simplifying it - it would make it more complicated for me to keep up with the matches that were played. By taking them apart I can more easily go through the results lists and see from the number of matches played per competition whether I missed something or not.
The calculation itself is trivial as that's done automagically by LibreOffice Calc after I entered the proper formulas - I just need to make sure that I don't mess up the number of goals against and matches played per competition.
If you are curious - this is how the calculation is done:

Top20 of what? Money list? UEFA coefficients? Top20 of the defense list (this changes after every matchday though).
But frankly, I don't really feel like keeping two separate lists as keeping up with one is sufficient work already. If you like I can explain to you how to set up such a list in a spreadsheet with the necessary formulas, and then you can try to keep a list with the clubs you want to have in it (you can simply copy the numbers from my table, if you like).

Great work as usual
The thing that I don't understand though is - the top five leagues, shouldn't that be 78 teams?
How do you decide which teams you leave out? For example, I see all of Bundesliga is in there, but the lower regions of La Liga don't seem to find entrance.
And, most of all. What the hell is Basel doing in there

Re: Return of the Top Defenses of the Top 5 Leagues 2016-2017 (stats)
Well, call me a bit lazy, but originally it was about the teams that got the best defenses, then I added all the CL+EL teams of the Top5 leagues (then ENG, ESP, GER, ITA + FRA - plus FC Basel, just because ^^) and with time I added some more of the better known and much talked about teams here at GL. Then a little later I decided to add the rest of the Bundesliga (again just because I could ). Let me ponder a little about it and maybe I'll add the rest of ENG, ESP, ITA and FRA. ^^

I see. You don't have to add anything for my taste. I guess if one of the lesser known teams had some excellent defensive record which would see them somewhere up in this table, you'd include them anyway.

Exactly. As soon as I see that there are some unfancied teams doing really well, I usually add them, too, just like I often add teams if they have an interesting goalie prospect between the sticks, to see how he's doing.
