Re: The Official Talk About Whatever Thread
Re read it before watching the movies? You surely are a cynical one, aren't you?
On an unrelated note: 4 out of my 7 hours this semester are social studies classes. Two are purely history (for the whole year!). I have rediscovered how much I love history this year.
I've been excited about this year since last year. I took more science last year and my social studies credit was AP Psych, but I knew this year I would load up on history.
I love it so

Incidentally I also re-read Ender's Game recently for the same purpose. I haven't had a chance to read Ender's Shadow though unfortunately.

Heh, well I was bored for the first hour of The Hobbit, when nothing happened except grassy plains (which looked weird at 48 fps) and random singing and dancing. Then once the adventure began, it was deus ex machina everywhere..

Yeah I know what you mean. My mom has never seen it still because she was so bored by the beginning. I actually did enjoy it when I first saw it because it's a film set in Middle-earth ffs, which was enough for me, but there obviously were some problems.beatrixasdfghjk. wrote:Heh, well I was bored for the first hour of The Hobbit, when nothing happened except grassy plains (which looked weird at 48 fps) and random singing and dancing. I don't get why every character in these movies needs to kick ass and take names. I mean, I love it, but even in the Fellowship, after training with Boromir and Aragorn for 1 scene, Merry and Pippin were just slaying goblins in Moria, and Sam was kicking ass too without any training. Then in The Hobbit, a band of supposedly misfit and not completely competent dwarves each rack up a minimum of 40 kills by the end
That one battle scene flashback outside of Moria in The Hobbit though (even if it's not exactly how that battle unfolded in Tolkien folklore)

Re: The Official Talk About Whatever Thread
Pretty modern. The classes I'm taking are APUSH (AP US History, AP if you're not familiar with it is advanced placement and is a college level class that you take and then at the end of the year everybody takes AP exams and if you pass--a 3 or more out of 5-- then you get college credit for the class) and IB European History. As you might expect, APUSH covers about 17th century onward for America and European History is 1850's to present day.dostoevsky wrote:Incidentally I also re-read Ender's Game recently for the same purpose. :rofl:I haven't had a chance to read Ender's Shadow though unfortunately.

As for our options...well as far as advanced classes go this is about all we have. Everybody is required to take world history their 10th year which covers a lot of ancient history- Greek, Roman, Egyptian etc.
Either way, it's amazing.

Re: The Official Talk About Whatever Thread
I'm in a group with a few exchange students from China this semester for an accounting theory course, and I really don't understand why some of them chose to come to a different country to study accounting of all things. Our group projects are all subjective case assessments of issues and how to resolve them for fictitious companies, and some of them simply do not understand English enough to understand what the issues even are and how to resolve them. If they plan on working in Canada, it is going to be very hard for them, and if they plan on going back to China, the reality is that a lot of the standards that they are learning about would not apply as well in China and they would need more education.
I'm not only bitching because I need to do basically all of the work given the limitations here, but because it just seems like a real waste of an education to me if you don't understand what is going on...although, in fairness, it seems like a large portion of English-speaking university students don't know what is going on either most of the time

Re: The Official Talk About Whatever Thread
Eman, in Australia our number one export is education which means our university system is full of people like that. It's more or less a rite of passage here, everybody goes through what you're doing once.
Plus, you haven't really been through anything untill your tutor starts teaching in Chinese, that's when you know you've got a problem

Re: The Official Talk About Whatever Thread
I go through it pretty much every semester tbh, it's just that the group I'm with now is very frustrating lol. My main difficulty is trying to explain to them why the work they're submitting for me to compile into our final deliverable is completely incorrect and not what we discussed earlier without seeming like a dick. Group projects in school do not simulate real work experiences at all.

Also, have you watched "Into the Wild"? If you have not, I think you would appreciate it.

Re: The Official Talk About Whatever Thread
Yeah! I watched it a couple years ago. Read like half the book but I was borrowing it from my English teacher and then summer happened so I gave it back and never finished it.
Amazing movie, I haven't seen it for a long time so I might think about watching it again.
