How can the Spanish govt. give Madrid and Barca money when over a quarter of their people are unemployed?

How can they hide and destroy evidence of doping in their sports? Its clever, ts for the best of their country. After all, how many will remember the destruction of the evidence as opposed to a famous tennis player or football player being doped?

I see the analogy, but I think that in today's interconnected world of information people will see through this facade.rwo power wrote:Bread and circuses. Au contraire, if the people have something successful to cheer on (football, tennis, cycling, ...), they forget their own problems for a while and stay more docile, so it is in the good interest of the governing bodies to keep up the facade.Forza wrote:I see the analogy, but I think that in today's interconnected world of information people will see through this facade.

Re: UEFA Financial Fair Play
Even in Roman times, eventually the people saw through the deception (vagi) and rebelled. I expect the backlash to come sooner these days. Brazil's World Cup spending is a good example of when details about government spending and corruption are exposed.rwo power wrote:Au contraire, if the people have something successful to cheer on (football, tennis, cycling, ...), they forget their own problems for a while and stay more docile, so it is in the good interest of the governing bodies to keep up the facade.Forza wrote:I see the analogy, but I think that in today's interconnected world of information people will see through this facade.

Well, it depends on when the critical mass is reached. So far it seems the facade still holds in Europe.Forza wrote:Even in Roman times, eventually the people saw through the deception (vagi) and rebelled. I expect the backlash to come sooner these days. Re: UEFA Financial Fair Play
it's more cronyism than anything tbh... pretty much everyone in spain who's not a fan of barcelona and madrid despises them both, promoting these two clubs wouldn't really achieve anything as a policyrwo power wrote:

plus it's not like they're giving them huge sums of money, the government is too broke to do that anyway, it's a small help here and there which i'm sure is privately compensated to whoever signs the contract...

FFPPSG confirm massive sponsorship deal
Paris Saint-Germain have officially announced their sponsorship deal with the Qatar Tourism Authority which will net the Ligue 1 champions up to 200 million euros a year.
Mooted last season, the agreement was publicly confirmed on Tuesday making PSG the first club to be sponsored by a state.
Income from the deal, which will reportedly be retroactively paid back to 2012, is said to increase incrementally year-on-year through to a reported maximum of 200 million euros come 2016.
"Our association with the Qatar Tourism Authority allows us to give ourselves the means necessary for the development of the club in the direction that we envisage," PSG's CEO Jean-Claude Blanc said.
It clearly benefits the image, as well as the results, of the club. QTA's support enables us to offer our supporters a level of performance in keeping with their expectations and our ambitions."
The sum will significantly help offset PSG's annual budget, which this year totals 430 million euros, though the club will also have to provide details of the agreement to UEFA before European football's governing body takes it into account with regard to the club's obligations to meet Financial Fair Play regulations.
As part of the agreement, Laurent Blanc's squad will be able to use Qatar's high-performance ASPIRE centre for this year's winter training camp, the third successive year the French club will have travelled to the Gulf state during their winter break, to prepare for a high-profile friendly with Real Madrid in Doha on Jan. 2, which will launch the second half of their season.

Rummenigge: Uefa should take action against PSG
Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has urged Uefa to take action against Paris Saint-Germain if they breach Financial Fair Play (FFP) as the rules are set to come into force July 1.
The Bayern chief recently voiced his concerns with PSG's spending and he has now called on Uefa president Michel Platini to punish the Ligue 1 champions if they indeed fail to comply with the regulations.
"It's hard to imagine that Paris Saint-Germain are complying with Financial Fair Play. We all know about the money stream coming in from Qatar, allegedly about €200 million per season," Rummenigge said at the SpoBiS convention.
"I hope that Michel Platini will take this matter seriously. Clubs that breach the FFP rules will have to pay the price. It's an important moment for Uefa. Clubs have had three years time to meet the FFP criteria and Uefa should not accept any breaches of the rules.
"People might disagree with Platini and I, but it should not be possible that some rich guy from Saudi Arabia or Russia can decide the Champions League. Platini shares my opinion on this.
"Bundesliga clubs comply with FFP, but this is not the case in all of Europe. Uefa should enforce the rules. The big German clubs will struggle to keep their teams together if other clubs don't comply with FFP."
PSG have climbed to fifth place in the Deloitte Money League with a €398.8m revenue over 2012-13.

One might add that Rummenigge is also chairman of the ECA, so he's not talking about this solely as a FC Bayern representative.

He's right but the loopholes have been exploited already
I doubt those responsible for punishing clubs have the balls to weaken the CL by taking potential winners out of it

Although the point is that these potential winners only bought their squads with money that violates the spirit and possibly (has yet to be properly determined) rules of FFP.Tomwin Lannister wrote:I doubt those responsible for punishing clubs have the balls to weaken the CL by taking potential winners out of it

No, I agree. But I don't think UEFA will be brave enough to lose money just to enforce their own seriously flawed rule.

Re: UEFA Financial Fair Play
Why won't they just introduce a transfer cap...
Spend 50 million max in the summer transfer window,25 in the winter one.
This would:
1) Deflate market prices
2) Prevent buying success
3) Make clubs have more faith in their youth system
Among many other positives....

Re: UEFA Financial Fair Play
Need a wage cap too tbh
Clubs like City stack up top class bench players who are on a wage so grand they're happy stagnating and sitting on the bench. Clubs who would actually play those players can't offer them a wage so ridiculous.

It would weaken it even more if the top European clubs that that are prepared to follow the rules of FFP set up a new Champions League excluding those that do not follow the rules. Didn't the old English 1st division collapse and the Premier league formed because of disputes. Maybe the same type of thing could happen again.

Re: UEFA Financial Fair Play
Well there has been talk of a European super league, which would probably crush the CL.
Not a fan of a splitting up, just hope UEFA have the guts to stop teams taking short cuts on the way up

Re: UEFA Financial Fair Play
There are ways around a wage cap (see Neymar's 10m signing bonus spread over the length of his contract). A transfer cap sound more reasonable although im sure there are ways around that too.

Either cap would have loopholes sadly. But something has to be enforced because it's getting out of hand.
