Fulham 0 - 1 Arsenal: Arsenal win again (somehow)
It's amazing how a team can play so badly yet still win. Fulham were down to 10 men for a good 80 minutes yet for the majority of that time were the better team, playing the better football and looking the most dangerous. Arsenal hadn't turned up at all yet somehow found a goal and somehow didn't concede for the rest of the game.
So, what was wrong with us this time? After the effort the players put in Tuesday, it's understandable that they wouldn't be as spritely today, but the lack of urgency in our play was still inexcusable. Nobody wanted to take a player on, nobody wanted to make a run in behind and nobody seemed inclined to move the ball quickly and actually, genuinely, try to break this Fulham side down. We had 6 shots all game. That's early-season-Norwich-Schalke-bad.
That's probably where this setup falls short. With an extra passer in the team, there's one less player that can move in behind and get into dangerous areas. Player movement needs to be very good to create those openings but nobody in our attack seemed to want to move today. Ramsey looked content to stay alongside Arteta, Rosicky looked content to not move much at all, Cazorla likewise, and Walcott and Giroud were like statues all game. Fulham easily shut us out by sitting deep. Because of this lack of movement, our possession often just went sideways and backwards in our own half, which was exceptionally frustrating to watch.
Of course, Wenger waited until the 70th minute to make any changes, bringing on direct players like Wilshere and Podolski. Wilshere actually did the one thing no Arsenal player did and take Fulham players on, but with everyone else playing like crap, it was unlikely to make any difference. This is just my annoyance talking, but has Wenger ever heard of half-time substitutions?
Despite this being another win for us, I'm worried about our recent performances against Norwich, Everton and now Fulham. As an attacking force, we've been way below par. It took a large amount of luck to get a goal against Norwich, we couldn't capitalise on a couple of good chance against Everton and today it took a set-piece to score. Great, we found an alternative way to goal where we usually wouldn't, but after that we looked toothless despite the other team having ten men.
At risk of scapegoating certain players, the current form of Walcott and Giroud isn't helping our course. Whatever form and momentum Walcott had going for him has seemingly disappeared, while Giroud is too hit and miss right now in just about anything he does. Perhaps the introducing of Chamberlain, Gervinho and Podolski to the starting line-up might galvanise the attack. If nothing else, those three are a lot fresher than Walcott and Giroud.
It goes without saying that Arsenal need a much improved performance to beat Manchester United next weekend. With Spurs and Chelsea have two games in hand on us, top four is still far from certain and we'll probably need to win our last four to ensure that we do finish in the top four.

Winning 1-1 (see the title)
Giroud now out for Man Utd due to a really soft red IMO, but hey at least this means Poldi will probably play

Yeah, just noticed. Corrected it now.
Feels like 1-1 for some reason.

Not sure if I should feel glad or gutted after that performance.

We have been average going forward in the past few games, Theo and Giroud are in terrible form. The back four and the midfield are carrying the team at the moment, something has to change. Poldi and Ox have to start to offers a bit more edge in the final third, at the moment our attack is toothless.

Possibly the most undeserved win of all time. I couldn't tell which team was suffering from a man less

I'm not looking forward playing against Yanited next week. Wonder who'll start upfront in that game, neither Gervais, Podolski or Walcott have impressed there.

Podolski hasn't even played in the central role this season. Easily more composed than either Gervais and Feo.urbaNRoots wrote:I'm not looking forward playing against Yanited next week. Wonder who'll start upfront in that game, neither Gervais, Podolski or Walcott have impressed there.

He went for a ball he wasn't going to win, got the ball first but went a bit over the ball and took the Fulham player down. It was a yellow at best IMO.REWB wrote:giroud got a red? for what? didnt see the last 5 mins

His touch and link up play was poor all game, his inability to make the ball stick up front hurt us a lot.

Re: Fulham 0 - 1 Arsenal: Arsenal win again (somehow)
showing league winning form and when the league is already well beyond us
when man u display performances like this and win they say man u have great spirit and a great winning mentality and they praise fergie like he invented football . when arsenal win in that manner they are accused of having little motivation, bad quality players, a mediocre squad, and a naive manager .
it will really interesting to see what wenger does with the centre forward position next week . i hope he plays podolski as the centre foward .

Re: Fulham 0 - 1 Arsenal: Arsenal win again (somehow)
the most terrible match i have seen in the last few months..
they were the better team from the first minute despite being a man less for the entire match..
we didnt show any interest to score.. our passing and giving away in the final third was pathetic.. we deserve to lose this match 2-0/3-0 if they had 11 men..
is it the players or the tactics.. we never tried to attack.. kept recycling the ball with side and back passes.. no one made any runs and pathetic crossing when forced wide.. it was like this team is playing its first match.. poor coordination and mispassing throughout..
credits to them who packed the centre, pressed us hard and forced us wide.. amazing that they showed such energy throughout the match , after playing just 2 days back..
the f** referee was blind.. Sidwell red card was right by the rules but most referees wont give it at 10th min in the first foul.. and Giroud incident.. dumbass is clearly blind.. we are screwed in the coming matches without Giroud..
and it is a surprise that we score from a setpiece, one CB assisting the other..
Ratings
Sczeny - 6 decent.. pushed one straight back.. we were lucky that it was called offside rightly..
Sagna - 6 he is as excellent defensively and in carrying the ball, as he is pathetic making that final pass or cross..
Metskr - 6
Kos - 6
Monreal - 6
Arteta - 5 didnt look his normal self.. boring backpassing..
Ramsey - 5 was poor.. back to old Ramsey trying difficult passes and wasting the ball..
Cazorla - 6 is it fatigue.. he never tried today.. he was happy to pass the ball backwards..
Rosicky - 6 the most lively of our players..
Walcott - 5 poor.. he delivered couple of nice free kicks and wasted the remaining..
Giroud -5 another average performance.. unlucky to hit the post and to get re carded by the blind dumbass..
Wilshere - 6
Podolski - 6

He's played twice there against Sunderland at home and Swansea at home (league) and we didn't score a goal in both games with Podolski having a poor performance in both games. Maybe it's not enough to judge him but we can't risk anymore points by playing him there and losing more points especially at this stage.
What I don't like about Poldi centrally is that he doesn't make any runs or has any movement he just expects someone to pass it to him and then pass it back. As bad as people make Gervais and Giroud out to be they actually have great movement off the ball and link-up play - they're just terrible in front of goal. But I liked when Podolski came on and play alongside Giroud against Norwich at home, that looked much better than Poldi playing alone upfront.
If there was a way to make a hybrid player in Giroud-Podolski he would be the perfect striker - Giroud's movement and link-up play and Podolski's cool finishing, shooting technique and killer instinct.

It's been a long time since Podolski has had a shot down the middle so we can't make any conclusive judgments. At this stage in the season, the fact that he hasn't played much in the last couple of months could actually work to our advantage, as will his eagerness to impress.
No matter how you look at it, he'll be a better option than an inconsistent Gervinho and an out-of-form Walcott.
